Subject: RE: Malton Folk Fest 18/19 March 2011 From: GUEST,Guest Betsy Date: 11 Jan 11 - 06:37 AM The young lady holding the guitar on the programme is holding a guitar with cut away at the top, and also she is left handed, but holding a right handed guitar. I know some wizards who have played opposite hand guitars but not with the (pointless) cut away at the top. Do the job right !!! Not a lot for session folk to do on the Friday and Saturday nights as it seems to consist of mini concerts . I'm sure your hearts are in the right place but the whole programme needs to be padded out to provide alternatives as people DO like to gather - simply for the craic. Try Padgett and others to get some enthusiastic advice. |

Subject: RE: Malton Folk Fest 18/19 March 2011 From: stallion Date: 14 Feb 11 - 04:04 AM Just a heads up Folks, just four weeks away, The singaround on saturday afternoon at the Blue Ball is, I am told, generating a lot of interest, we have been tasked to include a few Kieth Marsden songs as it is the 20th anniversary of his passing this year how those years have flown by. Not difficult for us as it is hard not to include his songs they are so well observed and written. Yes. I will echo Banjiman's sentiments about the line up. Plenty of opportunities to join in with us if you want a bit of a sing on Saturday evening, the bigger the chorus the better! Peter |

Subject: RE: Malton Folk Fest 18/19 March 2011 From: stallion Date: 14 Mar 11 - 06:15 AM I suppose like anything else the festival is what people make of it, fringes create themselves, I am pretty sure that there will be a pub somewhere that will accommodate a group of people singing and playing. The concerts are the pegs to hang hats on, nailed on targets, the other stuff, as i have said, is what the rest of us make it. |

Subject: RE: Malton Folk Fest 18/19 March 2011 From: stallion Date: 20 Mar 11 - 06:59 AM I was babysitting my 8 year old grandaughter Friday night! I told her we were going to a party but she got into her pyjamas, snuggled into her duvet on the couch and declared "we are watching comic relief", that was after ordering a domino's pizza on-line and whinged forever about how long it took to come. So I got kyboshed and *eed off i had to miss Fiday eve. Anyway saturday was brill, well done to Nick and Co, and a special thanks to the sound guys who were really good |

Subject: RE: Malton Folk Fest 18/19 March 2011 From: Betsy Date: 20 Mar 11 - 01:09 PM Where was the Musicians session ????? Certainly not in the designated pub with the session organiser after 2.10 pm when I arrived on Saturday. There were only two slightly dejected musicians - a concertina and fiddler from Wakefield . It was also a 120 mile round trip for me so I wasn't , and am not, best amused. Trust the singaround was OK , and the dancers seemed to have had a good time on the Square , which was a very long way - the next village in fact - from where the musicians session should have been. Very poor organisation indeed. |
Subject: RE: Malton Folk Fest 18/19 March 2011 From: stallion Date: 20 Mar 11 - 02:21 PM dunno what happened with the musicians, I suspect that Nick may have been relying on his brother steve to anchor it but his partner was in hospital last Thursday night (unplanned) and had had an op, my guess was that he was tied up and that may well have left Nick a bit thin on the ground. There are loads of rooms at the blue ball, anyway should have come up we could have alternated tune - song it would have been good. Malton is still finding it's feet and I am sorry Betsy was disappointed indeed she was not alone, if all the musicians that drifted our way looking for the musicians session had turned up at the venue at the same time there would have been a crowd! Never the less I will be there next year and I am going to make sure the other two make it for the singaround. |
Subject: RE: Malton Folk Fest 18/19 March 2011 From: GUEST,Betsy Date: 20 Mar 11 - 04:17 PM Hi Stallion , sorry to hear about the Operation and I hope all turns out well. Need to have a "Lessons learned" session , with Plan B's ,contingencies and back up , and try, if it is possible, to keep events within easy walking distance of each other. Money is tight so I'm sure that persuading pubs to take Folkies and their money ,isn't a difficult selling job ! If it had poured down on Saturday - it was going to be hell of a long drag for Dance musicians (and of course dancers) to get to the pub where the Musicians session was due to happen. Anyway better luck in future. |
Subject: RE: Malton Folk Fest 18/19 March 2011 From: Nick Date: 20 Mar 11 - 05:42 PM Betsy I must have missed you by a few minutes - I left the music session after most of the musicians went to accompany or dance with the dance teams. Went back to the sing where you could have had a tune too. Better than Helmsley a few years ago where we couldn't find anywhere at all to play |

Subject: RE: Malton Folk Fest 18/19 March 2011 From: stallion Date: 21 Mar 11 - 02:47 PM I have to say the landlady at the Blue Ball really did make everyone welcome and was really into the event, the beer was excellent and the pub itself is a great little boozer |
