Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Charley Noble Date: 16 Jan 11 - 06:32 PM Linn- Excellent list. I'd forgotten that I led "Yangtse River Shanty." I always tear up when someone leads "The Sloop John A." Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Tom has started quietly singing along (without his sound system) if the song is in his key. The problem is, he's still finding out what his keys are, what notes come easier and which need to be worked on, and what notes might not be there at all with the new vocal equipment. Linn |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Charley Noble Date: 16 Jan 11 - 06:08 PM Linn- I'll post Judy's notes for the song list tomorrow. We just got back from major birthday party for favorite niece. The songs I led were: Bound Away based on a poem by Bill Adams The Spectral Fishing Fleet by Charlie Ipcar Farewell to ANZAC based on a poem by C. Fox Smith Mobile Bay based on a Poem by C. Fox Smith Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Bat Goddess Date: 16 Jan 11 - 10:40 AM Not so much the kitchen staff as the waitresses who occasionally sort of joined in. Rita is Rita Pomerleau, a regular listener at the Friday session who has been joining in a few times with a song. I think this may have been her first time singing at a shanty session. Also Ernie Pigeon from Newburyport and Mike Modern from Portsmouth. Don't have time to start the song list right now -- work rears its ugly by necessary head. (Gainful employment is good.) While laying out my calendar for 2011 I noted that I'll be missing the March sea music singaround because of work -- smack in the middle of our expo/trunk show weekend. I'll miss the Friday session, too, as well as being knackered thanks to Thursday being St. Patrick's Day. Have to swap hours on Thursday so I can put in an appearance at all and, because of the trunk show, for the first time in 30 years can not only not take off the day following, but I can't come in late, either. Sigh. Linn |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Charley Noble Date: 16 Jan 11 - 10:09 AM I'd another one I missed was Rita. And the kitchen staff! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: GUEST Date: 16 Jan 11 - 08:08 AM I'll supplement Charley's list: the 4th from Gloucester was Barry O'Brien; Stephan Smith from Portsmouth and Annie Storr visiting from DC were among the good and loyal harmonizers. |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Jan 11 - 09:58 PM Well, if you missed this evening at the Press Room, you really missed a fine evening of singing. About 20 singers were there, and everyone had a chance to lead three or more songs. Nor and Eli, Judy and I, were the Maine contingent. The Gloucester gang (Peter, Joanne, Rose and I'm blanking on the 4th member) was there in force, Jeri, Mark, Chris, Justine, Marty, Jeff came in late, Tom and Linn, and two new folks from Newburyport, and one or two others. Judy took careful notes on what songs were sung and who led them but I think I'll do that post tomorrow. It was a fine evening. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: maeve Date: 15 Jan 11 - 05:26 AM That's welcome news, Peter and Joanne. Maeve |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: SINSULL Date: 14 Jan 11 - 08:55 AM Good to hear Peter is on his feet again. Someone buy Joanne a drink. She has earned it. SINS |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Charley Noble Date: 13 Jan 11 - 08:28 PM Tom- That's good news on several levels. I'm working up a new C. Fox Smith poem for singing but it's not exactly a sea song. The sea was there but the soldiers had a job to do on land and the job had gone very bad. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: curmudgeon Date: 13 Jan 11 - 06:17 PM I talked with Joanne, and Peter, this afternoon. Peter is on the high road to recovery from his surgery, and has even gone back to work. And if that's not good enough news, they both allowed as they're planning on gathering some of their gang and joining us on Saturday, |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Charley Noble Date: 13 Jan 11 - 08:27 AM Weather report looks decent enough for Saturday. Maybe a little light snow in the later evening. But nothing to scare away the true stalwarts lusting to lead or listen to nautical songs. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Jeri Date: 12 Jan 11 - 08:53 PM ...but all will be well by Saturday. |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Jeri Date: 12 Jan 11 - 08:52 PM Weather Underground has 20" in Deerfield 14" in Portsmouth, 15" in Derry, 14" in Somersworth, and 11" in N. Northwood (Stafford Co.). I got around 10" to a foot, I believe. Hard to say, as a lot of it seemed to want to stay airborne. If I got more than I was supposed to get, who do I call to give it back? |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Charley Noble Date: 12 Jan 11 - 08:26 PM And we've got a foot and a half which keeps blowing around and filling in whenever I go out a clear the entry paths and driveway. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: curmudgeon Date: 12 Jan 11 - 08:16 PM Officially, it was 14" in Portsmouth, 9" in Northwood, and it looks to be about 9" here in Nottingham, deeper in some drifts - Tom |

Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: SINSULL Date: 12 Jan 11 - 07:43 PM Did you guys really get a foot of snow? |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Bat Goddess Date: 11 Jan 11 - 08:52 PM Some months (such as this one, when the first is on a Saturday) the third Saturday sneaks up on you. Mary, hope you're feeling better. It's been a long haul for you! Linn |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: SINSULL Date: 11 Jan 11 - 06:05 PM Still on antibiotics, Tom. Maybe next month. Sorry Mary |
Subject: RE: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Charley Noble Date: 11 Jan 11 - 05:59 PM Tom- I'll be there for sure and maybe Nor will be with me as well. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: Jan.Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: curmudgeon Date: 11 Jan 11 - 05:52 PM The monthly shanty/forebitter/ballad session will be held at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM, by which time the streets should be passable and parkable. Although I can barely eke out an octave, I have neither tone nor volume and so will depend on others to sing for me. Looking for both those from the north and the south. See you on Saturday - Tom |
