I heard this 4 person folk style group for the first time on, of all places, the David Letterman show, and they just blew me away. They remind me of a sort of Celtic Steeleye Span, if there's a comparison, and I wonder if other catters have heard of them or seen them.

Only heard one song so far , but I am hooked.

There are a bunch of videos of The Low Anthem on youtube. I don't hear anything Celtic or Spannish in their stuff.

The Low Anthem is a Providence-based group (unless they've moved recently.) I've seen them at Stone Soup in Pawtucket, RI, a few times and also at the Newport Folk Festival. When I've seen them, they've performed as a trio, so they must have a new member. They've toured in the UK twice, I think. I'm not sure Stone Soup will ever be able to afford them again! I gather that they met at Brown University. This may have been their second appearance on Letterman. I think I saw them there before. I must have known about it in advance, because I rarely watch that show. I "shared" a post about that yesterday on Facebook but didn't post it here. I fell asleep before their performance last night, but I'm glad someone on Mudcat saw them. I am a fan and think they are unique. If you ever see them live or in a televised concert, you'l see that they trade instruments often and some of their instruments are not often seen at folk venues. Here's their website. http://www.lowanthem.com/
There's a place to click under the video to enter the site. They have no bios on the site. Wikipedia has an article that tells a little bit about them.

I've got a copy of their "OH MY GOD, CHARLIE DARWIN" album (great title, by the way). I quite like it. It's not the best alt-country/americana album I've heard, but it has a few great songs nicely done. My main problem is that it has such an irreconcilable split personality as an album - either low-key, introspective songs (most of which are excellent) or rootsy, Creedence-style rockers (most of which are a bit throwaway) with little continuity between the two styles. In fact it could be two different bands. I saw them at last year's Moseley Folk Festival and they were the same live. Fair play to them for not putting all their eggs in one basket, but at least they could have put both baskets in the same room...

thank you for the link,Chantylass. That was the song- Ghost Woman Blues- absolutely riveting, haunting and unforgettable - that I heard of Letterman. If that's the ONLY great song they've written-it's enough. I don't have time today to fully explore their work today, but I feel they are an exciting new talent for me to follow. Next week gives me alittle more space to follow them on Youtube, and I surely hope I get to see them in person.

I'm glad I was able to help. I'll try to view their Letterman performance online when it becomes available. Right now the most recent one available was on the 12th. I still can't believe I couldn't keep my eyes open another 5-15 minutes. I am usually a night owl. I hope they tour near you in the near future.

I liked the "Charlie Darwin" song and it is quite profound, but the singer's vocal style was a bit too whispery. It was hard to make out the words. Though beautiful they were.

I would have had to watch the whole program on the show's website when the Low Anthem's performance is the only thing I was interested in.

I give up. Just do what I did initially: copy and paste Lizzie's link into your browser.
