Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie-Life Magazine Archives From: Charley Noble Date: 14 Jan 11 - 12:20 PM I do find the links puzzling. This link (14 Jan 11 - 10:45 AM) provides the best resolution image with full credit to photographer, date, and original caption. Some of the other websites provide lower quality images or no info. Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie-Life Magazine Archives From: BrooklynJay Date: 14 Jan 11 - 11:09 AM The last link only yielded two photo results. If you click here you'll see the Google Images search results and all the photos linked to either LIFE or life.com which can then be clicked on individually. Great photos, I must say. |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie-Life Magazine Archives From: Charley Noble Date: 14 Jan 11 - 10:39 AM Yes, here's another attempt to link directly to the Woody Guthrie digital images: click here for website Hope it works this time! Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie-Life Magazine Archives From: BrooklynJay Date: 14 Jan 11 - 10:36 AM Another alternative would be to search Google Images with Woody Guthrie 1943 and find the photos that way. Many of the images you will see are directly linked to the Life Magazine website. |

Subject: Woody Guthrie-Life Magazine Archives From: Charley Noble Date: 14 Jan 11 - 10:07 AM This website is an incredible resource for some great photographs at moderately high resolution. For example here's a link to a set of publicity shots taken by Eric Schaal in 1943 of Woody Guthrie for the release of his book Bound for Glory: click here for website The first photograph shows Woody playing for some regular patrons of McSorley's Ale House, on Manhanttan's lower Eastside, which still looks exactly the same in 2010. Other photographs in the set show Woody performing on a subway, on a commuter train, for children in a park, for African Americans in a club, and on the street. The publishers dressed him up special in a seaman's hat, fisherman's sweater, and peacoat but Woody provided the cigarette dangling from his lips and the sign on his guitar saying "This Machine Kills Fascists." I may even order one of the enlargements of this photograph, suitable for framing. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
