Really LTS who can't be bothered to log out... Nurse Ratched will get me for that later.

Several folks are poorly so I thought we'd open up the room for them again, watch out though, the secret door to the drugs cupboard has been discovered and boarded up.

Spaw, Kevin, and anyone else, GET BETTER AND GET OUTTA THERE before Nurse Ratched and Nurse Shark come round with the bedbath equipment.... it's been stored in the freezer all winter so it should be about right.

JTT - get thee down to the isolation ward at the other end... there's a vat of the stuff brewing and tissues on standby. I've been making quilts and blankies all year so snuggle up in one and have a snooze - just don't spill the soup and if anyone asks you for a bed bath, be sure they mean to give YOU the bed bath and not for you to bath them... we've had some strange folks in here before now.

YUMMMMMY! Kim Chee!
I am still suffering but less loudly. Between the unkindness done to my lower intestine byt the antibiotics (YES I am taking acidopholis) and the lingering bronchitis, I demand a room. A private room.
And no bath. I can manage that myself.
I want a TV with Netflix and a bottle of Jack Daniels along with some decent wine.
Did I say WHIIIIIINNNNNNNEEEEEE?!!!!!!!!!!!
That's whine not whinney.

Doc gave me two puffers (doctor samples) today for my bronchitis as we are into shovelling sticky snow in mild weather mode. And, he inspected my buddy that followed behind me a while back... when he said "that looks very good" I burst out laughing and he started to chuckle and said he meant it was a good job... and we both took too laughing (ahhh, that's funny if you read the tread about my having had a haemorrhoidectomy a while back).

Then, he "proceded further" with the annuassal exam. He asked if I had good pressure. I replied I was feeling pretty good pressure at the moment and laughter again ensued. He CURTLY SAID, "When you pee!" I said, "Well, I could let you know in a few minutes but I don't think it will count."

I must say, when I got outside, I had the first enjoyable, with NO pain, fart I have had since the pain in the ass began. Matter of fact, I had several today and was very happy. Unfortunately, my next prostate exam will be in a year. I wonder if there are any holistic medicine practioners I could hire for such "therepy"? I'd shove my own finger up my ass but I am not a pro so I don't wanna fuck myself up eh?

Still in the Burns Unit. Every night is Burns Night until Nurse Hurty Gertie says "Goodnight Gracie!" and turn off the light.

Good news from X-Ray Ted, who says my cancer is still in remission. I ordered Maryland Cream Of Crab Soup to celebrate. My friends bring me in food, because they still can't get the diabetic diet regimen right and keep trying to kill me while the docs try to cure me. That's sweet of them to keep trying to give me sugar, but I keep telling them that love is a very Splenda'd thing. They must think that artificial sweetness is for airline hostesses, God bless their well meaning hearts. And the idea of being served Swiss Charred doesn't sound too appetizing to us in the ward, either.

The burns ARE getting better under the compression shirt, hugs don't hurt any more, but it still hurts and there's lots of PT Torture Stretches, Pain pills, other pills and creams. I just got another cream to put on my knees to go with the other seperate ones for feet burn areas etc. I use more creams than some ladies I know.

Whoops! They caught me in the computer room after curfew and Gertie's orderlier are escorting me back to my bed.

More stuff later......

I feel fine, but a doctor told me that blood tests showed I have a hyperparathyroid. I hardly even knew I had a parathyroid! Anyway, a lot of calcium I've taken for osteoporosis isn't getting to my bones, and I could develop kidney stones. I now have an endocrinologist and have had a lot of tests he ordered. He has referred me to a surgeon. Thus far I have avoided making that appointment but know I must do it soon. In the meantime I am drinking lots of water to avoid those kidney stones! Most people don't want surgery, but I have already had one bad experience. Several years ago I went in as an outpatient for my first "routine" colonoscopy. During it, my intestine was perforated. During hospitalization I had a pulmonary embolism, a lung collapsed, I was put on a ventilator and into an induced coma. I came out of it after about a month. Soon after I was trached. After another month in that hospital I was transferred to a rehab hospital for 3-hours daily of occupational and physical therapy. When I entered my therapy started with wiggling my fingers and toes. When I left I was using a walker. I received more therapy at home for a month. I graduated to a cane and could drive. I walked daily at a mall. It took me a year to get enough stamina to travel. Planning the trip was what kept me going. I went to England to visit my childhood penpal and her husband. Before the trip I said I wanted to see a lot of churches. I like church architecture and knew that in a church there would be places to sit if I got tired! Now I'm supposed to have an operation on my neck! What if there's a slip-up during that!

My arthritic knee doesn't like the rain so it's been giving me gyp all weekend... Today is sunny though, so I'm off to work in a minute..

Keep the beds warm, Spaw should be along any day now, Mousethief is hiding in the nurses station and Gnu is experimenting with the colon; or is it a semi colon?

Doctor should be round later today - no telling which one it will be though, so be prepared! And Bill - make sure you get him to look at your throat BEFORE he looks at Gnu!

Jennyo, be careful not to take my name in vein. Kimchi can do wonders for the sluggish and the listless. Give yerself a blast, girl, and get that old man of yours in, I'm doing reverse vasectomies cheap this week. Never mind if he hasn't had one to reverse, I'll give a 10% discount (easily paid for by lack of anaesthetic). Don't you worry your little head, dear, nursie will fix things!

Oooooooh, Nurse Ratched is around. Listen, you old X*&#!!*%*@! - there'll be no reverse vasectomies around here, discount or not! At least not without a reverse menopause for me.

That Kimchi recipe was fraudulent - it made the stuff sound almost palatable, when in fact it is the devil's work - and you the devil's handmaiden! Begone foul creature!!

All I want is a private room with a nice nurse, lots of pillows, warm baguettes and brie, and intravenous Pineau de Charentes. Is that too much to ask?

Where's Spaw? I put aside a bit of the kimchi for him. Thought he might like to make ratched's day miserable.

SINS, it's great to hear you're in such good health. And Severn, cancer free is wonderful - the Burns unit sounds a bit rough. what a journey.

LTS, all that can can dancing etc puts great stress on knees over the years. I've found this great stuff for my arthritis. It's called Lyprinol, and it's green lipped mussel oil. Either my arthritis has massively receded, or it's helping.

Rob's gonna have to spend some time in here with me in my private room. He's coming down with a bug too - seems like the bronchitis I had around Christmas. There's a lot of it going around. The changing weather doesn't help. After a few moderate days, and some sunshine, we are into another cold snap. The cold air can't be good.

Nurse Ratched - don't even think about it! There'll be no reverse vasectomies while I'm around! However we do need another IV with port in it, and mine needs topping up :)

Still on pain meds and not eating real food yet. If I skip the meds, it hurts (esp lying down - essential for sleep), and I tried eating a couple of too-soon foods and it hurt going down. Time, time, time.

Good news is that the evil side effects are gone! Hands fully functional and no longer tingly; eyesight back to its normal level of badness.

All but back to normal. Still restricting eating of things that go down in large clumps. For instance no matter how you chew most cuts of beef have intramuscular connecting tissue that just can't be chewed down all the way. Also wary of white bread and my megasized multivite. But all limbs are back to normal and no pain to speak of in the gullet or gut. Left shoulder still hurts a bit.

Metamucil is nasty stuff. And I make trips to the potty enough as it is without adding even more water to my daily intake.

Good to hear it mt. Water with beef (or anything dry, of course). I have a small sip of water before/with every second small bite unless it is a t-bone or rib steak cooked med-rare. Bread rarely but it's got marg or Miracle Whip (sandwich) on it. One thing about swallowing... cut out caffiene... especially tea.

I met a mucil that was orange flavoured. I like it.

One week after parathyroid surgery, I returned to the YMCA for Silver Sneakers (exercise class for seniors that can be done seated or standing) today (Tuesday). In 9 days I will see the surgeon again and ask if I can resume more vigorous classes. My neck tends to bobble because the muscles in front were cut, but there is definite improvement already. I look like I tried to slit my own throat; my daughter-in-law says I resemble the Bride of Frankenstein. The red slice marks will fade to scars eventually. I wore a scarf with family (lots of children) on Easter but other than that I haven't attempted to hide the marks.

Still in the Burn Unit and shall be so for a long time yet.

The latest thing they've had me do is low impact PT and excercise by walking in a swimming pool with the help of therapy nurse Ethel Fewell, whom we refer to as "Ethel Mermaid". I can do a lot of excercises in the pool even for my left arm and shoulder, so I may look strange thrashing around while I walk, but it does all have a purpose. I can walk long distances, but can't swim (or dance or run for that matter). And I find that the issued Speedos don't make you walk any faster. I just walk up and down while Ethel takes time to tell the class of old ladies to one side of the pool where to strategicly place balls and noodles....

There are also various exercise machines in an adjoining room, but you have to try to avoid the times that Hurty Gertie is in charge of the room. She applies more torque than Torquemada. The pain pills can hopefully make me even Morphine-dish than she is....

I can lift my left arm about 3/5 of the way up. Progress is slow, but progress it is, nonetheless. Dr. Lance Boyles the Dermatologist has me applying more creams to my body than some women I've been with. Special stuff for feet, knees, burnt skin, face and whatnot. The wounds are still there and ugly, but have gotten better under the dreaded compression shirts.

I can no longer bill myself as the New Crispy Minstrel. I suppose being the Old Crusty Minstrel represents some sort of progress.

I used up all my seasonal Eggs-essential thoughts over Easter in trying to rise to the occaision, but I can still watch the new orderly, a female ex-boxer we call Bedpan-Dora, observe the "Pass-Under" with the more immobile patients all year.

That's all for now, as I have a hot se-date with a pain management nurse.....

a song from the Burns Unit ..

Ae fond kiss, and then we severn;
Ae fareweel, in clinic heaven!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll wring thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll sing thee.

Who shall say that Ethel grieves him
While the star of hope she leaves him?
She, nae cheerful little nipper,
Shall flog him lightly with her flipper.

I'll ne'er give my partial blessing
Naething could resist my dressing;
But to see Gerty was to hurt 'ee,
Love but hurts, and Gerty's pert -ee..

Had you never used these potions,
Had 'ee never lashed these lotions,
Never met -or never parted,
We had ne'er been broken-hearted.

Fare thee weel, thou first and crispest
And again ye fine and blisterest!
Thine be ilka joy and treasure,
Tonics, tourniquets, balm, and pleasure!

Ae Lance Boil, he's but a kitten;
Too time constrained for decent hitten!
Let me teach that errant doc
How to lance and when to flog
Then Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.

And 'ware, young Severn, in the pool
these stray old ladies can be cruel
The rage of age shall e'er maintain
balls and noodles.... ON WITH THE pain..

Crispy Minstrel or Crusty Crystal
Chronic snorer or Bedpan Dora -
let's enhance Lance or come the crunch
lets mangle mermaids over lunch
a session with a pain management nurse
would make even old Robbie curse!

.... N.R.

ps NR doesn't ever apologise, otherwise she'd aiologise to Robert Burns (ed.)

I'm doing well, Sandra, recovering faster than I expected. I'll try to update after I see the surgeon on Thursday but wanted to thank you now before I forget. By the way, I've been to Sydney and loved it and as much of your country as I saw on a fairly extensive tour.

Nurse Ratched,

Your songs of pain are so....errr...."gripping" that Edith Piaf herself would be "P"-ed off with jealosy at your ability to express tragedy. I DO miss the lamented, departed InterVenus DeMilo's "hands off policy" to therapy (and her prosthetic arms made great back scratchers), but I'll try to find what little comfort I can from the admistrations from your seldom-spared rod and your highly-trained staff, which is where I must have gotten this Staff Infection.

You are quite the muse, and I haven't heard anyone's muse in the background since my cat died.....

I shouldn't complain, but I think I'll do a fast update.

My wife's healing from breast cancer surgery is coming along as expected, and she's taking an aromatase inhibitor without chemo or radiation. It was very small and very "young" -- T1a.

I have a defect in my left knee, according to an MRI, that is 1.7 x 1.8 cm in size. This is letting bone rub on stuff bone shouldn't rub upon, and there's the rub: while I'm going to PT, I'll almost certainly kneed surgery. Probably just in and out patient (hospitals aren't very patient anymore) but that's okay with me -- I have a better joint here than in the hospital.

Kimchee? Korean sauerkraut? If you eat it don't stand near open flames.

3 months after surgury my wife still has no control or use of her left quad which means she is still in a brace and uses a walker.

PT and electric stim has no effect.

I think a nerve got cut.

We are going for a second opinion but I fear that doctors covering up for each other may take precedence to a cure.

Oh, my! My heart go out to those who are ill or in pain.

I had my post-op exam by the surgeon today. He said the pathology work showed no sign of cancer, my incision has healed nicely, and I can go back to regular exercise classes in addition to the senior classes I had already resumed. The endocrinologist will keep checking to make sure that I am getting enough calcium and that my bones are improving.

Sandra, nice photos! I saw three short contemporary dance pieces one evening at the Sydney Opera House. Some of our tour group climbed the "Hanger" bridge, but I'm not that fit and terrified of heights anyway. My childhood English penpal married an Aussie and lived in Musswellbrook for several years before they both moved to England. Their son was born In Sydney and returned there to work after graduating from school (but not college) in Lincolnshire. He is now doing college classes after work.

Another of life's setbacks, this time a Strep Throat. So they're sending in the young sacrificial lambs to deal with my basic needs, Candy Streppers, Strep Minors, Strep-Teases or whatever they call the cute teenage nurse's aids these days, so that the A-Team doesn't risk infection more than they need to.

After it being scratchy for a week, they found amounts of positive "Culture" in my throat, so I may have to switch to singing opera or vocal folkal "Settings' that they'd give to people like Kathleen Farrier (sp?) when they thought they'd found a few trad songs that were too good for the proletariat. But it seems that after administering some old-fashioned codene-laced tussin syrup like they used to sell publicly in the old days, my real voice is coming back, for bitter or worse. After a night of tussin without turnin' on this stuff, I managed to sleep through the alarm as well as my pain management nurse appointment, which I must not have really needed at the moment anyway. Meanwhile, I'm walking the walk and croaking the croak. I've waited longer for this bit of hoarseness to come around than the one I bet on in the Kentucky Derby. I wish that nag had been sctatched instead of my nagging throat condition. I don't know which will end up costing me more money. Meanwhile, I try to relive the days of my phlegming youth, trying to be able to clear small throats in a single bound......

Thanks!

This place gives us a chance to print the truth about our conditions and recovery, while inventing our own fictional staff of doctors with their own attempts at cures. And it's a place that those who needs to know we will print updates, so that we don't have to tell the same story umpteen million times.

I Sixth the emotion and send out my best to all who are struggling with conditions of their own or of their loved ones. That's yet another reason we are here, to be there for each other and provide info and laughter to help out the rest of us. There's plenty of good therapy for all.

Soooo... I just had a minor "tweak" in the OR and, much to the opposite of what I was told, I had NO pain after the drugs wore off. The OP wasn't a full success as the doc stopped short on one side of my honker to see if the minimal invasiveness would do the trick. Might have to go back and reem out the left nostril some more in 3 to 6 months but it was a walk in the park as far as pain is concerned.

Soooo... let's have some updates from the rest of you sickos eh????

yesterday I picked up a nasty vomiting/gastric bug & even tho it is 11 hours since the bug announced it's presence in the very early hours of the morning, I still feel a bit woozey. I spent most of the 11 hours in bed & only got up 90 mins ago.

Sometime soonish I'll have a dry bikkie or 2, all I've had is water & paracetamol (tynal or something like that to the US Catters) following advice of a nurse friend I rang a few hours after the bug hit.

Jell-O? I can go out for supplies if you give me a list...
