I've figured out the chords to the verse, but I'm getting stuck on the first chord of the chorus.

My brain is starting to revolt after listening to the same three measures of the song fifty times. And the chords don't seem to be anywhere on the interwebz -- so I turn to you all in desperation. :)

Help, please?

Thanks, everyone.

I listened to some utubes.

The song is in A major. If you play the guitar with capo at 2, transpose the chords down two semitones.

Chorus:
G F#m A[C#m] D G F#m D D (! sounds horrible with that E)
G A[F#m] C#m D G A Esus4 E

In brackets: variants of the preceding chords, all heard on utube. Not really my taste, but Fahl obviously found it "interesting". The pianists did not sound too convinced themselves.

Thanks SO much. I'd never have figured that out.

The chords for the verse section all make sense -- I'm wondering what on earth happened to her when she got to the chorus...

Thanks so much, Grishka. That Esus4 is the missing ingredient. With the help of another Mudcatter (thanks, Louie), I'd figured an alternate, "easier" set of chords that works great... but I'd still like to have the proper set of chords from the recording.

The chords you gave me are for the first two lines of the chorus -- could you possibly provide chords for the rest of the chorus, as well?

Thanks again.

You're welcome, Ellen. Sorry that I failed to treat the last line of the chorus. Here is the whole song, as approximately heard here:
Verse:
A E F#[A] D A A[F#] D[Bm] D[Esus4] (perhaps always meant to be E7)
A E F# D A Esus4[E7] A

Chorus:
G F#m A[C#m] D G F#m D D (perhaps meant to be E or A)
G A[F#m] C#m[A] D G A[F#m] Esus4 E
A Dadd2 A Dadd2 A Esus4 A

Interlude:
G7 C G7 Am F C G C E A D A D
I think the pianist was quite a bit off the role (and Mary Fahl's guitar is mercifully inaudible). He plays different chords in the repetitions, as indicated in brackets, for which I see no logical reason and therefore assume that at most one of each pair was intended by the composer.

Mary's voice has a lot of power and emotion, but the song would not be quite my taste even if it were performed correctly. If you like it, enjoy it.
