Subject: Obit: Susannah York, British Actress From: GUEST,mauvepink Date: 15 Jan 11 - 09:53 PM The BBC have reported that Susannah York has died aged 72. Such a shame. She was always an underrated star in my opinion and played so many diverse roles as can be seen in a quick biography I remember her best in "The Killing of Sister George" which was way ahead of its time and quite a risque part for any actress back then. She handled it with aplomb as she did all her parts. RIP mp |

Subject: RE: Obit: Susannah York, British Actress From: MGM·Lion Date: 16 Jan 11 - 03:06 AM A sort of "folk" connection was her having played the daughter of Alec Guinness's Highland colonel, a lover of pipe music, who lists the "Tunes Of Glory" to be played at his rival predecessor's military funeral in the fine film of that name. Susannah York, as his daughter, has meanwhile been pursuing an illicit affair with the corporal-piper. Pipe music, some original but also much traditional, is a running theme of the film. I met her once briefly on the set of a film by the Children's Film Unit, run by friends of ours and for whom my wife and I played some small parts, and of which Susannah York was a director and played the mother of the child protagonist in a film called "Daemon". ~Michael~ |
Subject: RE: Obit: Susannah York, British Actress From: alanabit Date: 16 Jan 11 - 03:47 AM I had not heard anything about her for quite some time. I hope her final years were spent in peace though. Did she play the devotee in the Dora Bryan "Killing of Sister George"? I recall that as being pretty chilling, if not only because I had only been used to seeing Dora Bryan in comedy roles before. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Susannah York, British Actress From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 16 Jan 11 - 03:48 AM O nooooooooo!!!! Sophie Western is dead! As a teenager I adored her in Tom Jones - she was beautiful, sassy, and still got her man. I loved that she wasn't one of those prissy girlie-girls, and followed Susannah with great interest after that role. I am so sorry to hear this. 72's way, way too young too. Rest In Peace lovely Susannah |
Subject: RE: Obit: Susannah York, British Actress From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 16 Jan 11 - 03:54 AM Her own recollections regarding that role in Tom Jones are less rosy than mine: "I'd actually turned it down three times because I really wanted to do some theatre. I had made up my mind to say no once and for all at a lunch I cooked for Tony Richardson, after three or four wooing lunches from him and Vanessa Redgrave. I did all the classic things - salt instead of sugar, burnt the meringues - and, in the midst of all my apologies, I accepted." After that, she never looked back... |

Subject: RE: Obit: Susannah York, British Actress From: alanabit Date: 16 Jan 11 - 03:59 AM I have just looked up the obituary and I now realise that I should have remembered her a lot better for her roles in "They Shoot Horses Don't They?" and "The Battle of Britain". The Guardian obituary. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Susannah York, British Actress From: GUEST,Alan Whittle Date: 16 Jan 11 - 10:13 AM She looked fabulous in an RAF shirt and French knickers in that scene with Christopher Plummer in the Battle of Britain. They were getting on great and then Herman Goering started the blitz. Others will mourn the great actress, i will mourn lady in French knickers. The killing of sister George was a great role for Beryl Reid and her. But I was too young to pick up the urbane humour. i liked it fine when I saw it a year ago. |
