I don't! What the hell good is a bar if ya can't have some women and chimpettes allowed in? I bet they didn't allow even male chimps in them bars you are talkin' about in Alberta. I got refused entry at the Alberta border in 1998. Them suckers are gonna be very sorry, because when I get elected President of the USA in 2012, we are goin' to annex Alberta! If they try to stop us, they can try dealin' with the 1st Armoured Division and the Air Cavalry. Goddamn Canuck cowboy specists! I will fix their wagon, but good.

He's probably long gone to eternal rest. but when I came into Canada as a landed immigrant at the little crossing at Coutts, the kids, wife and I were extremely tired. The official was very considerate.
He paid for cokes out of a machine. When the papers were completed, he told me to go through a door.
I was perplexed as it was a closet. Then on a shelf I saw a bottle of good whiskey, glasses and a pitcher of water.

The customs official was 'disposing' of confiscated liquor. The drink (or two) was much appreciated. Driving was less tiresome as we went on to our destination, but if we had been stopped by a mountie, I couldn't have passed a breathalizer(sp?) test.

In Alberta (our destination), each pub had two areas, one for men, one for women. In some, a small third area was for couples. The main hotel in Calgary had a large basement room for men, smoky, stinking of dead beer and an amazing variety of men (except Indians who were prohibited from entering).
Some of us oldies regret the passing of the men-only bar.

This from last summer -
Crossing the border into Canada from New York I stopped at the duty free shop and bought a case of my friends favorite beer.
At customs, the agent asked me if I had anything to declare. Yup, answered Mr. Honesty, got a case of beer in the back.
Agent then asks me if it was for me.
Nope, answered Mr. Honesty, its for my friend who having a party.
Agent then tells me that the only way I can import beer into Canada is if it is for my own use.
He then touched the side of his nose, and said, "I'll ask again. Is that beer for you?"
"Yup, sure is."
"Enjoy your visit in Canada, Sir!"

When I moved to Indiana in 1960, I found in effect two laws that freaked me out. These were State statutes, not local ordinances.

1. A woman could not legally sit or stand at a bar, let alone be served there, whether alcoholic or non-alcoholic. She had to be seated at a table.

2. A customer was not allowed to carry a drink, say from the bar when his table was ready at last; he had to ask a waiter to carry it for him. This applied also to a situation where the customer had been served at his table, then he wanted to go join a friend whom he saw at another table--even if the friend's table was within arm's reach.

I'm pleased to report that both of those statutes have been repealed during the last fifty years, at some time.

We have an 'interesting' situation here in the Wash DC area. I live in the Northern suburbs, in Montgomery county, MD...which is the only county in the US which operates its own liquor authority, and the selection in county stores is limited (growing the last few years, but limited).
   I can drive 10 minutes east to stores in Prince Georges county, and get better stuff..even in grocery stores...or 10 minutes south to stores in DC, where there is even a better selection, usually at better prices. Technically, it is illegal to transport purchases from DC to MD, but I bought beer there many times. As long as it isn't large amounts, no one pays much attention, but they DO plant spies to watch for people loading up, and bust 'em.
I can also drive 20 minutes to Virginia stores.... what is a gourmet to do!

Of course, the patchwork of gun laws is even stranger in the USA. In Texas and Arizona..and especially Virginia, you can buy or carry a wide range of firearms...but in many states, guns are, at least formerly, a lot more restricted. Guess what all that leads to?

Steve, This really Pissed me off when I was in CO a coupla years ago, I visited a winery nr Grand Junction and tasted some really splendid wine ( A First class White Burgundy clone somewhere between a Chablis and a Montagny) and couldnt get a case sent to Maine so my friends could enjoy it!!!

That Canadian liquor law exists in the U.S., too. You aren't allowed to transport liquor for your own use from one state to another.

The hell with past laws, right here and now we have some interesting legal quirks.

In Canada, it is illegal for anyone who is not the government or a producer to ship or transport any alcoholic beverage from one province to another. If you're an Ontario resident visiting a winery in, say, British Columbia, you had better hope the LCBO stocks the stuff you like 'cause you can't take it home with you.

Any more odd laws, changes to laws or legal cases, not that long ago, from your neck of the woods to add? Here is mine (1929 to me is "not that long ago" considering how odd this seems:
