I've been listening to Tom Rawson's "Where the Coho Flash Silver" a lot of late, and there are some songs on it I hadn't heard before and that I really really like. "Passing through" is one, and "Take a Box, an Ordinary Box" another, and maybe best of all "Circle of Light"... which the wife wanted the lyrics to so I wrote 'em down and then thought I'd better share with the Cat...

CIRCLE OF LIGHT

by Mari Anderson on her CD Visible by Night
as sung by Tom Rawson on his CD Where the Coho Flash Silver

In a circle of fire, in a circle of light,
Come together, come to sing, come to this night
Come on sisters, come on brothers,
Climb on board and hang on tight,
We're taking flight in a circle of light

In a circle of light, in a circle of peace,
You can lay your burdens down and be released
Every heart is hungry, come on, welcome to the feast
Of harmony in a circle of peace

In a circle of peace, in a circle of friends
Leave your troubles at the door and start again
No more whispering in the shadows, come on, join the angel band
And lend a hand in a circle of friends

In a circle of friends, in a circle of song
Every frog and every sparrow, sing along!
If they told you to be silent you could show them they were wrong
It'll make you strong in a circle of song

In a circle of song, in a circle of fire
Catch the spark, 'twill set you blazing with desire
Every voice can move a mountain, every breath can be a choir
And we'll conspire in a circle of fire

In a circle of fire, in a circle of light
Come together, come to sing, come to this night
Let it echo in the valley, Let it ring from the mountain height
We're taking flight in a circle of light
Gonna set things right in a circle of light
Gonna sing all night in a circle of light.

TAKE A BOX

Unknown Artist
as sung by Tom Rawson on his CD Where the Coho Flash Silver

Take a box, an ordinary box, listen, listen,
Take a box, an ordinary box, listen to what I say,
Take a shadow, put it in the box, close the lid and buy some locks,
That'll be one less shadow blockin' out the light of day,
That'll be one less shadow blockin' out the light of day.

Take a tune, an ordinary tune, listen, listen,
Take a tune, an ordinary tune, listen to what I say,
Take a sorrow, hang it on the tune, step outside and sing it to the moon,
That'll be one less sorrow turnin' all your colors gray,
That'll be one less sorrow turnin' all your colors gray.

Take a friend, an ordinary friend, listen, listen,
Take a friend, an ordinary friend, listen to what I say
take a worry, share it with a friend, stretch it out between you, it'll break in the end.
That'll be one less worry tryin' to get in your way,
That'll be one less worry tryin' to get in your way.

Take a box, an ordinary box, listen, listen,
Take a box, an ordinary box, listen to what I say,
Take a shadow, put it in the box, close the lid and buy some locks,
That'll be one less shadow blockin' out the light of day,
That'll be one less shadow blockin' out the light of day,
That'll be one less shadow blockin' out the light of day,
(That'll be one less shadow blockin' out the light of day).

Another good one is "Somewhere to Begin", which says "Unknown Artist" on Tom Rawson's CD, but may be by TR Ritchie, on whose website you can find the lyrics: here. (All the songs on Where the Coho Flash Silver say "Unknown Artist" except for "Circle of Life", which credits Mari Anderson...)

Hello Friends--I stumbled upon this thread and am curious to know where "Unknown Artist" is listed as the composer of the songs on "Where the Coho Flash Silver". The CD clearly lists the composers, and I pay royalties to those who are still living. Please be sure to credit these wonderful songwriters whenever sharing these lyrics. Here are the songwriters:
Circle of Light--Betsy Rose
Take a Box--Rob Lopresti
Big Bend Boulevard--Paul Tinkerhess
Well May the World Go--Pete Seeger
Christmas in the Trenches--John McCutcheon
I Believe--Linda Allen
Old Settler Song--Francis Henry
If You Miss Me--lyrics by Charles Neblett and others
Passing Through--Dick Blakeslee (I added some verses)
Willamette River Song--Becky Bernson
Where the Coho Flash Silver--Lloyd Arntzen
Key of R--Libbie Anthony
Somewhere to Begin--T.R. Ritchie
Up Above My Head--Sister Rosetta Tharpe
I Bid You Goodnight (Sometimes attributed to Joseph Spence)
Please see my web site www.tomrawson.com if you would like to order a copy of the CD.
Many thanks!
--Tom Rawson, Seattle WA

My mistake. Or Microsoft's? I didn't look at the CD jacket insert when I posted that, I just went by what Windows Media Player showed as the artist, namely Mari Anderson for "Circle of Light" and "Unknown Artist" for all the others.

I'm terribly sorry, Tom, that I didn't wait to post until the morning when I would have been clear-headed enough to look at the jewel case! (In a few cases I knew who wrote/composed them and if I hadn't been asleep at the keyboard I'd have done right by you and them.) I'm a big fan of you and this music, and would not knowingly or intentionally fail to give credit.

Haruo aka Leland Bryant Ross, Seattle, WA

Hi Leland! No problem. So apparently the Windows Media Player has a field for songwriter and either leaves it blank or makes it up. But no harm done--the songwriters have been properly credited on this thread. Thanks for your kind words about my music. I'm doing a benefit for the local Fellowship of Reconciliation chapter on February 26. Info on my web site tomrawson.com I hope you can make it. Please spread the word to anyone you think might be interested. --Tom
