How very English Billy. Most countries on this planet regard 70 miles as a short hop! In Australia its too close for comfort in many cases!

Primitive facilities? I couldn't care less as long as there's a tap, a netty and a beer or two. I don't go away to wallow in the bathtub for hours on end. Any way, I believe the " facilities" have been upgraded,so that puts paid to the late night sing and swim.

The walk doesn't take long, but the taxis which are always outside the station are even quicker and last year cost less than a £1 each, but only if you bring your friends back with you.

I'm playing again, either the boys can't get enough of my lovely singing or they just give me the booking to shut me up!

The facilities are what they are, I recall one festival I went to where even finding a toilet was something of a challenge!
The water in the showers was hot, there was somewhere to hang my towel and I have my trusty flip flops to save me standing on the dirty part of the floor! That'll do me!

As someone else has said regarding the taxi situation, if you get a group of four, a one way journey is less than a quid, you're hardly going to go bankrupt!

I really enjoyed last year, it was my fella's first trip to Whitby and my tent held up very well in the wind!
But I'd like to apologise to anyone who was offended by my excess noise making during Waterson-Carthy, I'd spent the day getting drunk in town with the two Julies, no one gets out of that situation unscathed!

Me and my big mouth :-( Tents destroyed in high winds, sea frets and rain (plus a blazing hot afternoon when I'd taken my coat down town!)

BUT Thanks to Glen and Chris for an absolutely brilliant weekend of music, food and friendship. Vin on top form, music from new (to me) people and Alister singing as well as I have ever known him.

Thanks too for my raffle prize of a tent peg remover - and the accompanying signed photo of Vin.

I'll have to remember to book early next year. The way it's going I can see it being a 'Sell Out' very quickly.

Hope the tent peg remover came in useful Tig 'cause when it came to pulling tent pegs out of the ground I nearly had an hernia!

The blessed Whitby earth wouldn't give 'em up!

That probably accounts for the fact that there are so few little tweety birds in Whitby 'cos they can't pull t'worms out of the ground and the sea gulls have evolved to attack and live off our fish and chips instead!

Sorry Tig /Glen , I was enjoying reading the thread then someone mentions their mal-functioning Bronchia , and turned the thread into one of those French 60's films where you haven't a clue, why, or who, or for what reason something totally unconnected is introduced.
The bronchitis (without an owner) was confusing.

Dave Hanso.,
Whitby is 17 miles north east of hetton le hole, not 30, what sense is there in organising a festival,17 MILES away from an existing one, on the same weekend .

I thought Hetton le Hole was just beyond Durham, nearly 60 miles to the north of Whitby :)

There's room for 2 festivals surely, I'd have difficulty getting to Hutton le Hole even though it's only 20 miles away, especially over Bank Holidays when public transport is even thinner on the ground than usual.

Aw!c'mon Good Soldier Schweik you can't organise a festival anywhere in England without clashing with something else, folk festival or not.

It's simple really, you pays your money and you takes your choice.

I know Hetton le Hole reasonably well and given the choice I will always gravitate towards Whitby 'cos if there are bits of the festival that don't appeal there's always plenty to do.

Any road up we enjoyed it immensely so big thank you to Glen and Chris from me and Liz.

PS.I still didn't get a chance to play your Streb Les,perhaps in August!

hutton le hole.
jp2, yes but how many festivals, 17 miles away, occur on the same weekend.
The Whitby festival would undoubtedly been even busier on another weekend.
Ryedale was well organised and well attended, and was better than ever.

Aw!c'mon Good Soldier Schweik you can't organise a festival anywhere in England without clashing with something else, folk festival or not."
There are ONLY a few other festivals, Whitby, Saltburn, Ryedale Scarborough sea fest plus darlington spring, Within close proximity to the spring session, That leaves approximately 48 weeks of the year free, after all it hardly matters if spring session claashes with sidmouth, or broadstairs, it is just plain bad business planning to put it on the same wekend as saltburn or ryedale.
for example the leveller may well have gone if it was another weekend.
I Applaud anyone who organises a club or a festival, but cannot see the point of not maximising potential audience, it is to me as if the organisers are deliberately handicapping them selves by not choosing a weekend when there is not another festival within close proximity.

It seems to me that the M&C Organizers made the move to the Bank Holiday when Cleethorps Festival bit the dust. Now Dust is not a good description for the Spring Bank Holiday as more often than not it rains. However on the plus side it not in the Football season making the move to the Rugby Club possible. Plus Whitby seems to have one Festival or so every weekend in the summer but not Spring Bank. The other benefits of Whitby the sea and sand swimming pool paddling pool and so on and on and on make Whitby a better choice for some.

"That leaves approximately 48 weeks of the year free, after all it hardly matters if spring session clashes with sidmouth, or broadstairs, it is just plain bad business planning to put it on the same weekend as salt burn or ryedale.

What happens is this you put your money were your mouth is and run a festival if it works you break even or god forbid make money! If not you pay up from your own pocket or do a Pickering Festival and do a runner.

Anyone can tell you what you are doing wrong but just who is the person with the knowledge to tell you how you can defiantly be doing it right.

The local benefit to the Rugby Club putting funds into the Club to keep it running and to improve the Showers ECT I am just speculating on the reasons why the festival moved from the begin of May to the end of May. The M&C have a reputation of trust and well done to them come on lets hear three cheers for the M&C. In the meantime enjoy your festivals and if you don't like one go to a different festival. Simples!

The two events both choose a bank holiday, presumably as a significant proportion of their intended target audience see a 3-day weekend as better than a 2-day. Given that a good number of those attending will be campers that doesn't offer many likely dates in the year. This is the more so when you rule out August because the Whitby FF runs right up to it.

Yes, Hutton-le-Hole and Whitby are quite close together, but comparing the two programmes suggests to me that each event is catering to its own distinct group, and that the number of people who would wish to attend both (but be unable) is relatively small. Do the organisers (as opposed to their vocal champions) of either event feel that they have lost out because of the proximity of the other? If not then this would seem to me to be a needless debate.

previously in 2009 it was held on the first weekend in may, what is the logic behind changing to the end of may and possibly losing out on audience who may prefer to go to Ryedale, in my opinion to put on a festival 17 miles away on the same weekend is rather like tying a stone round your leg when trying to swim.
from a performers point of view it is also reducing the possibilty of being booked, unless the performer can get one gig on one day at one festival and one gig at the other festival.
however, I am glad to see the festival has been rejuvenated, and that it was a success.

It still is a friendly and positive thread, if you cant take someone criticising a choice of date,That is not my problem.
I have praised the organisers for rejuvenating the festival, however if whitby spring session had been organised on the same weekend as Saltburn, I would be equally critical.

Dick,
When Glen finally closed the very successful Moor and Coast festival, which used to take place at the beginning of May , his intention was always to start up a much more low key , largely "do-it-yourself" type event...based more on sessions supplemented with a small geust list. I think that is exactly what has been achieved and I'm sure he's pleased with the result. As someone pointed out, part of the reason for the change of date was the availability of the Rugby Club.
The event was quite deliberately called Whitby Spring Session and not
Whitby Spring Festival. (In fact if my memory serves me correctly it was originally called The Whitby Spring Thing)

I think a fundamental point is being overlooked by all parties here, both festivals have limited space at their chosen venues. Neither festival has, as far as I aware, the resources to accommodate the combined number of people who attend the individual festivals.
As a suggestion to those who wish to attend both festivals I can only propose that they alternate between them year by year.

Cheers

Raggytash

I think the suggestion was that both festivals run each year but that people who went to Whitby this year might go to Ryedale next year and the 2011 Ryedale festival goers try Whitby in 2012 :)

my previous posts have taken an objective view, now i will be subjective and speak in the interests of Dick Miles.
I would be delighted to play at both festivals on the same weekend, it would enable me to reduce my fee for both organisers, and yet earn more money than i did by playing at ONE FESTIVAL, if i did both gigs for twothirds my normal fee, i end up better off financially,
From a purely selfish point of view ,i welcome two festivals running in close proximity on the same weekend, particularly as it involves only one journey from ireland,
PLEASE feel free to contact me at www.dickmiles.com.
dickmiles can provide concertina workshops, ballad workshops song writing workshops beginner guitar workshops, beginner 5 string banjo workshops covering double thumbing drop thumbing up picking and frailing, he is also an experienced mc and is happy to mc concerts or singarounds
