Subject: FRANK HAMILTON'S NEW CD!
From: Sandy Paton
Date: 05 Sep 99 - 02:01 PM

Here's a copy of the press release sent out to the "folk" DJs around the country. I think we can be proud to have Frank in our Mudcat community.

Sandy (hoping his cut & paste works!)

For half a century, Frank Hamilton has shared his unique musical gift with the greatest artists in folk music. Now, in his first new album in almost three decades, he has gathered a collection of his favorite traditional and original songs, presented here for your listening pleasure on a new CD: Long Lonesome Home.

Throughout his tenure in the American folk music community, Frank Hamilton has played with, accompanied, and taught some of the most prominent folk artists of the twentieth century, including: Pete Seeger, Odetta, the Weavers, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, Tom Paxton, Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston, Mahalia Jackson, Theodore Bikel, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Hoyt Axton, and Joan Baez. He was a house musician for the first folk music night club, Chicago's Gate of Horn in 1956, and has appeared at numerous folk festivals, including the very first Newport Folk Festival in 1959.

As one of the founders of Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music, Frank Hamilton helped bring folk music to a wide audience, teaching his musical skills to countless students, including the teenaged Jim (now Roger) McGuinn. On this new CD, McGuinn returns the favor, accompanying Frank and his wife Mary on 'Brazos River.'

The songs on this CD were chosen not only because they are some of Frank's favorite songs, but because they are rarely heard in this day of the singer/songwriter. "I think that the more traditional folk songs that are recorded today, the better it is for our cultural climate," says Frank.

This remarkable new CD also contains memorable stories about Frank's experiences as a prominent member of the American folk scene, including his work with the legendary Weavers and his friendship with Woody Guthrie.

Here are some comments from folks who have heard 'Long Lonesome Home':

PETE SEEGER: "Frank Hamilton is, believe me, one of the most creative musicians in the country. No, in the world! I hope many, many, many people hear this wonderful CD."

TOMMY MAKEM: "What a joyous recording this is!! Here is genuine American folk music in all of its wonderful diversity, sung and played with knowledge, love and artistry by a master."

RONNIE GILBERT: "...takes me happily back to evenings in the sixties, when you could drop into your local coffee house and be wrapped for a quiet hour or two in easy acoustic pleasure."

ODETTA: "The folksinger's folksinger--master of the art!"

ROGER MCGUINN: "Great songs and great stories from the man that taught me to play guitar and banjo."< br>

JEAN RITCHIE: "[The] presence on the recording was amazing--I felt that if I looked around, he'd be in the room, singing and playing in person."

TOM PAXTON: "...brings back his days with The Weavers, and his stories about Woody Guthrie (and getting a harmonica lesson) are just what an old folkie like me needed. Well done, Frank!"

THEODORE BIKEL: "Frank was always a superior banjo player and guitar picker and still is today. It is his voice which has retained the timbre and range of years ago. This is truly fine work."

SAM HINTON: "It's not only an enjoyable CD--it's IMPORTANT!"

GUY CARAWAN: "I got to know Frank in the early 1950s in Los Angeles. I'm happy to see him come out with his own CD. He has contributed so much to American folk music."

The songs performed on 'Long Lonesome Home' include:

1. MICHIGAN WATER 4:43
2. WOODY GUTHRIE* 1:50
3. DO RE MI 2:23
4. RED ROSY BUSH 5:15
5. THE WEAVERS* 1:50
6. JAY GOULD'S DAUGHTER 3:00
7. COWBOYS* 1:50
8. BUFFALO SKINNERS 5:48
9. DRIVIN' STEEL 5:11
10. BRAZOS RIVER 3:01
11. WOODY GUTHRIE* 1:50
12. PASTURES OF PLENTY 3:10
13. UTAH CARROLL 7:51
14. SAM BASS 2:58
15. HELMET SONG 3:40
16. LONG LONESOME HOME 3:45

* = STORY

We hope you will enjoy listening to 'Long Lonesome Home' as much as we at Indian Trail Records enjoyed producing it, and as much as Frank enjoyed recording it!

Congratulations Mr. Hamilton. I am truly looking foreward to hearing this one. I learned so many songs from your "Folksinger's Folksinger" LP on Cencertdisc---"Blue Mountain", "Miserlou", "The Ash Grove". I know I'll be singing along with you on this one for sure. I do hope that'll be reissued one of these days. Mine's been worn out for years.

I suppose I must get this, it's almost as if God himself came down from the Mt (only the 2nd time to date that I've heard of but I'm not that up to snuff anymore) to give it his personnal stamp of appvoval & even he wanted to hear the Brazos River done by the one who really remembered it, he said that he doesn't go back as far as you & that even if he did he wouldn't have gotten it right anyway (sorry Frank, after reading the above blurp, I couldn't resist the light poke) & I'm am looking forward to hearing how you handled Sam Bass (musically not personnally, ok another chuckle)
Sandy is this a CD you'll be handling & if so are you or would you be bringing any to the DC getaway, please? Barry

Looks to me as though you can order it from Frank or direct from the company. I'll carry it, if I can work out a deal of some sort with them. They might just want to make the profit for themselves!

Frank: you and yours going to start shipping 'em out to fill Mudcat orders? Seems like it could be a nice way to bolster the family income. If so, I'll place the first order.

I would like to thank you all so much. I can't tell you how important Mudcat is to me and getting to know you all. Sandy, I'm grateful to you for your interest in offering to carry some of my CD's. I put Harvey (my producer) in touch with you and you should be hearing from him. I am more grateful to you for you and Caroline offering such great music, for Folk-Legacy and all the wonderful work you've done for folk music.

Art, thank you so much for fine music that you have offered us over the years. I'm honored to be able to talk to you guys in this forum as well as the rest of y'all. (Since I'm living in Georgia for 14 years, I have earned the right to say 'y'all' I think, although some natives round here might disagree with me). I love the version of the steamboatin' song about "Egypt". It's a variant, I think, of Uncle Dave's song, "When The Train Comes Along".

Kat, I hope that my stories will be interesting to you. I'll try not to go on and on. To me, stories and music are about sharing and that's what makes this list so important.

Spaw, I hope you like it after all this hullabaloo about it. Of course I'm honored to have my dear friends offer their comments in my press release. Hope I've done the music justice. Thank you for your kind words and I value your contributions to the Cat as well.

Dani, I appreciate the suggestion. Thanks.

Barry, I am just like you guys. I love the music and that's what counts. Hope you think I did it justice.

It was a labor of love for me and the first time I've recorded in about thirty years. It all happened on-line. I met Harvey again after asking questions about how to produce a home CD on rec.music.audio. Harvey and I go back to the Ash Grove where he was the sound and lighting man for the acts there. He remembered me from that time (1960's) and said anytime I wanted to record, his studio was open to me. We e-mailed back and said "When and where?" So we got in our car and went to Texas. He lives close to Denton where Sam Bass used to hang out. Harvey lives close to the Old Chisholm Trail as well.

The internet is amazing! Sorry to ramble on. Thank y'all so much.

Frank Hamilton

Frank. For at least six or seven years I had grave misgivings about the internet (the computer itself, actually) and used to just "tune out" (or make wise cracks) when friends would start discussing their internet adventures. Simply, I was scared stiff of something that made me feel so stupid. A friend finally pushed the right button and showed me how much fun it was to simply use the computer as a word processor, and I haven't touched my Smith-Corona since.

Technologically challenged I might be, but intense curiosity seems to be allowing me to learn a lot of things on the computer in an odd-ball fashion. Truth of the matter is it's been hugely entertaining and I'm having a ball.

Best of luck with the new album.

Rick

Frank,

I wore out the grooves on "Nonesuch" long ago. I'll be carrying the new CD at Camsco. I talked to Harvey Gerst and he's sending me a copy to pass along to Vermont Public Radio. Much good luck with it.

The last time we met was at the WBAI radio studio in New York City on Billy Faier's radio show sometime around 1959-1960. I'm really looking forward to hearing "Long Lonesome Home"

Both Wally and I will be at the Getaway. If we have copies of Frank's CD by then, we'll make sure you hear about it. I'll probably have a handful of Rick's new CD, too, as well as his Lifeline from Folk-Legacy. I'll have other Folk-Legacy stuff with me as well, of course. When we travel, we're a regular "rolling store."

Wally: Why don't you go first with Frank's, and I'll do the backup. I'll take first on Rick's. Okay? That way we can share the great wealth! I hate competition.

The only ones I know that have sold that many, Rick, were by artists with large families. You've gotta count them in the total. 'Tis a lean world, this alternative one we've chosen.

Hi WyoWoman,

Thanks for inquiring about the "Folksinger's Folksinger album. I don't have a clue as to how to get it. I haven't seen it for so long I almost get the feeling I didn't make it. :) I'm pretty sure Concertdisc went out of business a long time ago. Wish I could help, just don't know

Hi Rick, I know what you mean. I had to talk myself out of my technophobia, too. But when I find places like Mudcat, it makes me happy that I overcame my resistance to computers. To this day, Pete Seeger doesn't own a computer. He says it's because poor people can't afford it and he wants to align himself with them but I think the real reason is that if he ever got on one, you'd never get him off. He'd love it so much! I'm looking forward to hearing your CD,too, Rick. I defintely want a copy. Sandy, can I buy it from you?

Wally,

It's nice to remember times together. Thank you so much for your interest.I hear Billy Faier is doing well in Woodstock, NY. He plays for folks on the streets occasionally, I understand. He's one of the best 5-string players I know. I was priveleged to play accompaniment for him on "Art of the Five String Banjo" for the now defunct Riverside, which was owned by Tom Clancy (of the Clancy's) and one of the best labels around in those days. Riverside put out those wonderful records with Odetta accompanied by Bruce Langhorne, a great guitar player. I remember Billy's show on WBAI that we did. It's nice to hear from you, Wally.

Frank

Frank,

The Riverside catalogue is now owned by Fantasy Records who have reissued some material from it, sometimes whole albums, sometimes in compilations. A Sonny Terry album (with Alec Seward playing guitar) from 1953 was just reissued in the past couple of weeks. One of Odetta's Riverside albums, "Odetta and the Blues," is available as a Riverside CD.

In 1996, they released a series of compilations called "The Riverside Folklore Series." Volume 3 was called "Singing the New Traditions" and includes three tracks from the Billy Faier album you mentioned. Two of them, "Green Corn" and "Three Jolly Rogues" are with you on guitar and vocals.

The Clancys owned Tradition Records, Frank. I can't remember the names of the Riverside guys right now, but they were one of the labels Ken Goldstein pursuaded to have a fling at folk. They did those early MacColl & Lloyd sea song recordings that influenced all of us. Taught us that we could harmonize on the fifth instead of just the third. Great awakening!

Saw Billy Faier do a house concert here in Sharon about 30 years ago. Small crowd, most of whom had never heard him before. He played some pretty far-out banjo stuff. Quite abstract.

I don't know how Wally and I can work out our Mudcat arrangement if we're both handling your new CD. If folks go to the "shop" and ask for it, which one of us would make the sale and give the percentage to Mudcat? We'll have to figure that out with Max, somehow.

I will offer Rick's new CD as soon as it arrives and will post it on my Folk-Legacy web site. It'll be easier for folks in the U.S. to order Rick's through me, and maybe folks from U.K. and Oz, too, since I take credit cards, those magic little plastic bits that make international exchanges so simple.

We'll keep you informed, folks.

Frank,

Keep 'em coming, darlin! Stories and music are what I was raised on and are in my blood. Yours, Sandy's, Art's and many others' stories and songs on here have brought so much to life for me and, at times kept me sane!

My family used to go camping a lot and we always sat around the campfire, with daddy playing his guitar, fiddle, or banjo while we all sang. Being here at the Mudcat reminds me of that and gives me great peace, pleasure, and contentment through the day. And, it is good for my heart, mind and soul!

Thanks to all of you.

From: Rick Fielding

A couple of interesting issues have come up lately. I was speaking to one of the Toronto "Catters" and he mentioned that it would be a shame if the Mudcat became "too commercial". That can often be an issue in the personal lives of those of us who earn all (or part) of our living in Folk Music. In virtually every other form of music the artist and their supporters are separated by many things, like agents, managers, the concert venues themselves, and more often than not by the very "image" that the artist must create to keep that "mystique"..that needed "separation". In country, rock, classical or other commercially viable music forms, fans are added by the hundreds (or thousands in some cases) at a time. Speaking only for myself, I play small venues, and when I make a new fan, it often means I've made a friend as well. I would not be in this field if I had to have an "image" or follow anyone else's guidelines on how to be successful. Figuring out how my life and work have gone over thirty years ain't brain surgery. I'm someone who sings and plays pretty well, has found the folk community meets my needs better than any other, has tried to experience first hand, or through reading, everything connected with that community, and has been incredibly lucky to have earned a livable income doing what I love. The folk people are wonderful friends AND they provide me with my livliehood. So everytime someone (even a friend) buys a ticket to see me play - I'm being commercial.

Most Mudcatters are dedicated (and often very talented) part time singers and players with other professions to pay the rent, and never have the need to second guess themselves about possible conflict of interest on a site like this. For those of us who need the financial support of our friends, in order to keep playing our music outside of our homes (and towns) it can be a bit uncomfortable at times.

I have received terrific "Cat" support for my radio show, concert appearances, and recent and current albums. I still get a little "antsy" about this, 'cause I'm here to have fun like everyone else. But...I was welcomed into this community at first, solely on the basis of what I tried to contribute, be it some knowledge of folk music, silly and esoteric humour, and in general an openness in sharing my life experience with new folks. When others thought I'd earned it, they started plugging a few things I did professionally. Embarrassed or not at times, I've appreciated it.

I hope some other incredibly generous members of the Mudcat family don't mind me using their names here, but they're in similar situations to mine. Sandy makes his living singing and selling wonderful music. His postings to the "cat" on virtually a daily basis are incalculable. How many of us have been absolutely blown away by the contributions from Frank Hamilton and Art Theime? I've just discovered the music of Guy Wolfe, because of a posting about his new CD...but I knew a fair bit about him before that ever came up because of his contributions. Same with Paul Evendon and his lovely CD tribute to his wife. Even Max occasionally gets a "commercial" jibe or two. Well, if anyone wants to argue with me what Max has contributed to my life through the Mudcat this year....they'll lose. I have far too much ammunition.

So to my friend who's a bit worried that "we don't want to start sellin' stuff here", I can only say "Go back and look at the posts for a few months and you'll see that there's a hell of a lot more givin' than sellin'.

Rick

Who the hell sez we don't want to get commercial. I said it before..............If this is what it takes to keep Rick, Art, Sandy, Frank, and all the rest in my life.........then sell away. The parties have agreed to do it in a way that is visible so that those that don't want to be bothered, don't have to be.........And our friends came here, not because it was a commercial venue, they came to contribute their knowledge, to "pass it on". And they do so on a regular basis. I feel as though it is a privilege to be able to purchase their CD's, as it is a way for me to further their ability to continue to keep "passing it on". Without getting into specifics, I will say this. In the case of these people, they have passed on CD's, recordings of interviews, and tons of other things for free. They have loving hearts and honest intentions. Go for it.

Mick

Sandy, you're so right. I confused Riverside with Tradition. The Tradition label is what I was talking about in reference to Odetta. I think Orin Keepnews, the jazz producer had something to do with Riverside Records. Thanks to you and Wally for your efforts on my behalf. Wally, that was a fun time with Billy!

Kat, I love the stories too. It's so important to know the stories and history behind the songs we love. I think this is what keeps us sane as a nation.

Rick, re: commercialism, folk music presentation is a branch of the music business whether we like it or not. When someone decides to make a living at performing, it's music or show business. The people who may have trouble with this concept are those who are not actively engaged in earning an income from performing. They have other jobs and perhaps they feel like they may have "sold out" so they put that on anyone who decides to make music into a living. Thank goodness talent is supported by an audience who pays for it. I, for one, hope to hear about new releases and artists who have recorded folk music so I can buy some of their product.

By the way, Barry Finn, got a chuckle out of your post and I can assure you that the guy coming down from the mountain was bearing CD's instead of tablets. :)

The idea of commercialism being somehow "bad" needs to be examined furthur. I think it comes from a left-wing sensibility in the earlier years of the folk song revival movement which tended to be "anti-capitalist" in ideology. I don't think that many musical artists that I have known are intentionally totally commercial in their approach to music. Last time I looked, folk or other kinds of music wasn't the same as soap suds or widgets. :) But Pete Seeger and others have made a pretty good living out of it. The Weavers made a good deal of money and I bet one of my faves, Jean Ritchie isnt' doing too badly also. Woody was starting to make some money but sadly he could not enjoy it. I think it's wonderful that great talent can be supported, make enough money to lead a decent life and share their gifts with the world. If it takes a little promotion to the extent at least of getting some information about new CD's or appearances, I feel that as a consumer of music, I am benefitted.

To add to that Frank, most of us, baring the lucky few that got their music from a trad source, are left to hear what's out there only as long as those that can sustain themself by playing the music can afford to scratch out a living from it. Without them it's back to the dark ages. Barry

Agreed, Barry.

I see nothing wrong with playing a variety of music to survive in the musical field. Whatever gigs keep us going is fine. In the area of folk music, I think, also that it's important to consider the tradtitonal folk music that is not a part of the coffee house or concert stage as a valuable resource not dictated to by the uncertain winds of the music business. I see myself as a folk song "revivalist", not a traditional source and can see that the traditional singer may not be a salable comodity in the business of entertainment. I attended a music business class at Georgia State University and was asked to bring an example of traditional American folk music to show the students what it was. I selected Almeda Riddle. I was astonished at the hostile reaction it engendered by the young rock music biz types who were working toward a place in the "industry". I couldn't believe how close-minded they were! It underscored, for me, the importance of educating the public as to what traditional folk music is. There may not be many gigs available for this kind of music, today.

I don't know how Wally and I can work out our Mudcat arrangement if we're both handling your new CD. If folks go to the "shop" and ask for it, which one of us would make the sale and give the percentage to Mudcat? We'll have to figure that out with Max, somehow. Sandy

I guess I don't understand how Mudcat works. Sandy, please give me a call (or Wally) at (940) 482-3422.

Harvey

My own sense is that Mudcat has worked out a pretty sensible rule of thumb about commercialization, which is that as long as it is done in the spirit of the community -- by somebody who is here, contributes, and is working at this for a living, or wants to share some new information with others concerning something, a record, a gig, a festival, they are excited about -- as long as it is "internally" connected to the people involved, and not just "externally" motivated to use this as a billboard space for consumers, then it is O.K. I think it is more than O.K., it is required. If we don't support the people who make up this place, then it isn't much of a community: it is just an economist's marketplace. I think it is very, very important to talk about money and the jobs and the rest, and maybe we don't even do it enough -- surely there must be elementary business lessons that could be shared by the pros here, and be at least as useful to the survival of a new artist who comes calling as a new bar chord. (I know, you wouldn't start from here.)
It wasn't until I started talking to Rick Fielding that I began to realize some of the economics of the folk end of the business (of course, I am a complete outsider and pretty stupid) -- but folk musicians have it as tough as environmental activists, which I thought was about as low as you could go and still be in the food chain!!
yours, Peter T.

Apparently it has been decided that Wally will carry Frank's new CD and supply it to the Mudcatters who want it. That's fine. It does avoid confusion. It might have been nice, or courteous, at least, to have included me in the discussion that led to that decision, since I was the one who started this thread in the first place, to draw attention to an old friend's new recording.

Sandy (just curious)

Hi Sandy, I agree that would've been nice. I did firstly ask if YOU would carry & if YOU would bring some along to the getaway, not only as a push for Frank & you but also Mudcat seeing how it was you who brought Frank's new CD into our birdseye view. This is far from any area where I could claim more than an idiot's understanding of the business end of the music so if I'm out in left field for thinking that it seems that more sensitivity might have been called for please forgive me & if things moved a little to fast in the haste to get Frank's overdue creation out to those of us who would best love & support our fellow folkies maybe we could take all it as a lesson learned while dealing with the growing pains of the Cat, we are all none to perfect. I just clicked on the "blue clicky thing" beside the graphic at the top of the page. The graphic of this new Frank Hamilton CD. It tells me that you have one of my favorite songs on it; Sam Bush.

By the way, does Sam Bass play any mandolin or fiddle on the CD?

With the exception of Roger McGuinn on "Brazos River" and several cuts with Frank's wife Mary on guitar or autoharp, all the instruments are played by Frank. I assume you meant the song Sam Bass, and the player Sam Bush.

Sandy, you are a very special and most important part of the Mudcat. I have so much respect for you and your family and all you've done and are doing. Sorry, this somehow got muddled and that you were not extended the courtesy of a consult. Your recommendation, alone, was enough to make me want Frank's CD.

Harvey -

I guess I should've done one of those little ":-)"'s, or maybe a ***grin*** afterwards.

I just noticed a little typo on the info page and it listed the song Sam Bass as "Sam Bush".

Carl,

Thank you for catching that typo. I went crazy trying to figure out what page it was on. All corrected now. This stuff happens. After 3 months of staring at Frank's CD layout by 20 people, and the pressing company making the films, it almost came out as "Long LonesoNe Home". They caught it just at the last moment before it got out the door. God, I love the music business!!

Frankly, no pun intended, the only way to know what's out there in the form of cd's, tapes, etc., in the folk music genre, is to see/hear it on the mudcat. If you've been in the music stores recently, the bulk of what they carry is rap, rock, and country. If they do have a tiny folk music section, it's lumped somewhere in the country section. Same with bluegrass. So if it's not advertised or discussed on the mudcat, most of us wouldn't know about it. Actually, I went into a Camelot Music Store in a mall in Merritt Island, Florida, last weekend, and found a fairly (and I use the word loosely) decent folk music section. But ... I had to ask one of the store people if they had a folk music section and it was lumped in with the country music.

So ... I say "don't be shy about letting us know what's out there and how we can get it." I'm planning to increase my music library at the fsgw getaway. Did you hear that, Sandy? moonchild

In about 1961, Frank Hamilton made a record on the Audiophile label. It was AP-73, Knots in the Devil's Tale. I am trying to find further details, including the date, location, and track listings by side. Any suggestions? This information will be added to my Audiophile discography at www.flash.net/~bobgh.

Thanks

I believe you might mean the same LP that was on CONCERT DISC RECORDS----the one I mentioned in the second p[ost to this thread a few years ago. That LP was called FRANK HAMILTON--- FOLKSINGER'S FOLKSINGER. It did contain the song written by Gail Gardner sometimes known as "Sierry Creats" (taken from the Sierra Crieta Mountains in Arizona)--about the two cowboys that got drunk and ran into the devil.

Frank also had a solo LP on Folkways Records---and an album of duets end collaborations with Pete Seeger. That album was called NONESUCH. It came out about 60 or 61.

It is worth pointing out that available from Smithsonian Folkways on CD are --

- Frank Hamilton Sings Folk Songs (1962) F-2437; and Nonesuch (1959) (F-2439).

Peter T.
