Subject: Lost Folk Tapes From: Spleen Cringe Date: 29 Jan 11 - 06:51 PM This may be a long shot but... inspired by Janie's thread about great bands you wouldn't have heard, I decided to set up this website: Lost Folk Tapes As you'll notice if you visit, there are no lost folk tapes on there yet...which is where hopefully some of you Mudcatters might step in! I've reproduced the message to musicians page below. I'd be really grateful if you can hav a read of it, and if it appplies to you, think about getting involved. If it doesn't, but you know people who might be interested, please pass the word on. And if you can generally let people know about it, either via other forums you're part of or Facebook or email lists/groups or whatever, that would be fab. On more thing to add - this is completely non-commercial, not-for-profit and so on and it's not yet another bootleg site etc... its simply about giving people a chance to hear forgotten music... and hopefully it will be a lot of fun. Here goes... A MESSAGE TO MUSICIANS e know that there are hundreds, probably thousands, of people out there who sung in folk clubs, played in coffee houses, performed at demonstrations, whooped it up at band dances, entertained in bars, busked in parks and generally made all sorts of folk music in all sorts of circumstances. And we know many of you made recordings of what you did - to sell at gigs, to give away to friends and family, to raise funds for a cause or maybe just because you have the opportunity and wanted to do it. You didn't necessarily make the big time, you may have only played in your local area. Equally you may have trawled across the country week after week, chasing all the bookings you could get. You may be completely unknown, you may be a name plenty of people will remember. You may be from the USA, The UK, Australia or anywhere else in the world. You may have hung up your hat forty years ago, you may still be playing regularly. You may have been a traditional musician, an acoustic singer songwriter, the bass player in a folk-rock band, a psychedelic troubadour, a protest singer or all or none of these. Whether you made a self-released cassette to sell at the end of your gigs, or a long defunct local record label released an album with you, or you went into a studio to make a demo or you captured a halfway decent recording of a live performance, you are the people this website is about... and we want to hear from you! We'd like you to send us your music. Ideally, we'd like it digitally (and we don't care about the format - MP3, WAV, AIFF or anything else you prefer to use) but we're also happy to accept stuff burned onto CDs, cassette tapes or even vinyl by post. We also want your stories and memories... and the odd photo would be even better. We'll only do with it want you want us to: we can put it on the site as sound files for visitors to listen to or we can make it available for people as a free download, if that's what you'd like. Simply get in touch with us using the form on the contact page... we're looking forward to hearing from you. The only proviso is that we can only accept stuff you have some sort of ownership of... if the rights to your recordings belong to EMI or Warners or someone, we can't post them on the site, because, um, we don't want to get sued or closed down. So please get rummaging through the boxes in you attic and get in touch with us - you're the only reason we created this site. And thank you. We continue to get enquiries from musicians and singers who were active in the period we're covering every day. Keep 'em coming! We've also had a couple of interesting emails from people who made recordings at folk clubs and other events... I'm now appealing for the amateur photographers out there to get in touch. If you were in the habit of taking photos at your local folk club or at festivals or other folk-related events, it would be great if you got in touch - it would be good to post some of your images on the site to illustrate the articles - or maybe even to do a feature on your photos. Also have some local radio tapes of the second incarnation of CROWS when Jon Burge was replaced by Dave Bordewey, that have never seen the light of day. ERIC (me, Colin Thompson, and the late Nigel Chippindale)was a charity project after Nigel died. And then a few years ago, I found a tape of a few more tracks. Which I have no idea when or where they were recorded! HACKNEY MARTIANS, (me, Alan Lamb, Chris Pitt, Gavin Atkin) is probably the most bizarre project I have ever been involved with! Again, it was released only on cassette. I could use the word eclectic, but it's too posh a word! Multiple overdubs by bouncing from one tape to another, sound effects a plenty (think crap Spike Jones) and a rare example of the "Tenoroon" (lika "Bassoon" but smaller!) Even mating tortoises....No, I don't know why either! |

Many years ago at Sidmouth we (ERIC) did an expanded ceilidh with "Six Hands in Tempo" (Theres that derbyshire connection again!) called by Jo Freya ( Didn't know whether to call it "Erics hands in Jo, or Jos hands in Eric!) For the dance out at the end we played "Beside the seaside" In the middle we fired off 3 MIDI Linked Casio keyboards (The diddly ones!) programmed to play the same, and we all shuffled off to the bar...Went on for 10 minutes until we took pity, and pulled the plug! Shame, maybe that it was a one off and never recorded! |

The main problem from my point of view is that of permission. I don't particularly want to jeopardise the future of the site by putting material up without the okay of the broadcasters - which would undoubtedly mean getting into the world of licences and contracts, and most likely, requiring money to change hands and vast chunks of time consumed managing the inevitable bureaucracy (For example, someone got in touch recently to say they had years' worth of recordings they'd made at their local folk clubs and they had donated it to their local Public Records Office/County Archive. When I contacted the PRO concerned to see if I could access some of this material, the fees were far too much to contemplate for a site that is essentially run at a loss in my spare time as a labour of love - though I can understand that PROs need to cover their costs, too!). I'm happy to try to gain the necessary permissions (and I'll always do this for any recordings that I put up at the site anyway - usually from the artists featured, which is why I'm currently sitting on some real corkers I haven't been able to add yet...). However, given that I'm not running this site as a commercial venture, I don't want to get into paying the Beeb or ABC or whoever for the right to broadcast something they no longer care about and have probably lost. I have about six linear feet of boxes of tapes (they're stored vertically) from my Dad's house. Some he had kept in his shelves for the contents, and others he had marked to record over (because he may have transferred them to cassettes, or thought they were too old to fool with.) I have a tape recorder/player that my aunt gave me a few years ago - it's an old one, so I'll have to work out a cable and device interface between the Phillips player and the computer. Any suggestions? I have a box of cables she sent along with it, but I haven't looked at them in a while. Might be RCA plugs, might not. More on that later; I'll trace this thread. Dad was a reference librarian (John Dwyer) from the Pacific Northwest who taped a lot of folks in coffee houses and hoots and song circles, and this includes a few Mudcatters, as far back as the early 1960s. I own these tapes and the rights to them, though I would defer to the performers on the tapes if they can be located if they are used in any way. SRS |

Make sure you have plenty of room on your P.C. Pick an interesting looking tape. Play and record all the way through. Don't be tempted to spool through the tape. When the tape has finished inspect the tape heads and guides for oxide dust etc. With luck there may not be too much, but with old tapes the oxide layer sometimes just falls off. This is why I recommend recording the first play - it may be the last! It's worth the effort for even a few small snippets. Good luck. Andy |

One or two altered notes in the melody & likewise, words in the lyrics, but essentially our version created back in the 60s. Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Jim Carroll Date: 26 Sep 12 - 05:25 AM In the sixties MacColl and Seeger released 10 magnificent albums of British and American ballads, 'The Long Harvest' on the Argo label. In 1969 as an addition they recorded 2 albums of non-Child ballads and MacColl gave a lecture on ballads to a live audience at the Decca studio in Hampstead - I was in that audience and asked a question. The albums were never released and apparently the recordings were lost - shame. Any information on these would be gratefully received Jim Carroll |
