Subject: Pretty songs From: kendall Date: 31 Jan 11 - 07:20 AM I woke up this morning with an old song that I learned in school titled "Jaunita", and it occurred to me to ask what the crew considers just plain pretty songs. Jaunita Believe me if all those endearing young charms. Lorena Ava Maria go for it. |

Subject: RE: Pretty songs From: kendall Date: 31 Jan 11 - 08:10 PM Palace Grand |
Subject: RE: Pretty songs From: Phil Cooper Date: 31 Jan 11 - 09:13 PM kendall, are you looking for pretty, or pretty, with some teeth? I would have suggested Palace Grand, but there's more to it than pretty. I think anyway. I like the tune to Drew My Ship, but there's another under current. Which is why I like those songs. For pretty, there's also Richard Thompson's How I Wanted To and Dave Carter's Gentle Soldier as well. At least I like them. |

Subject: RE: Pretty songs From: J-boy Date: 31 Jan 11 - 11:33 PM "Wild Mountain Thyme" and "Here Comes the Sun" are such perfect and pretty songs. Whenever I hear them there could be tears. Honest. |
Subject: RE: Pretty songs From: beeliner Date: 01 Feb 11 - 12:05 AM Two by the late great Townes Van Zandt, "No Lonesone Tune" and someone already listed "If I Needed You". |
Subject: RE: Pretty songs From: kendall Date: 01 Feb 11 - 08:26 AM Phil Cooper, whatever you see as a pretty song. It's all subjective. |
Subject: RE: Pretty songs From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 01 Feb 11 - 12:15 PM I'm an indifferent pianist, so I tend to play pretty songs rather than exciting songs. Pretty songs are easier. So here is my list of pretty songs, most of which you can probably download from the internet. I have decided to add 'ss' to the songs which might be deemed sweetly sad rather than pretty. all through the night aloha oe amelia's waltz annie laurie the ash grove ashokan farewell aura lee baloo baleerie beautiful dreamer beautiful savior bendemeer's stream black is the color of my true love's hair - ss blow ye winds southerly gallowa hills - ss christmas day ida moarnin (from Fiddler's Fake Book) come and dine confesse, his tune (playford dance) - ss dainty davy - curly pow and all daphne or hit or miss - (playford dance) - ss y deryn pur (welsh. see contemplator's site) dissempling love (playford dance) - ss salley gardens eleanor plunkett fanny power ffarwel i Marian - ss greensleeves her mantle so green - ss hyfrydol - well-known Welsh hymn tune jeannie with the light-brown hair michael turner's waltz (Mozart) minuet in G from the Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach mockingbird hill mrs. hamilton of pincaitland - found on mudcat o give me your hand old black joe over the waves pleasant and delightful que sera sera rosbif waltz - found on mudcat - ss rose of tralee rose of allandale shepherd's wife waltz si beag, si mor snowy-breasted pearl streams of bunclody - O'Neill's number 338 sweet and low think on me - ss tombigbee waltz vi is dos geseleh - subject of a recent thread - ss the water is wide waves of the danube (Anniversary [sp] Waltz) we gather together welladay, or Essex's last goodnight - ss when you and I were young, Maggie We are under a blizzard warning here in Kansas City. Yesterday was icy, and cars and streets are still coated with ice. The wind is making a whooshing noise as it whirls around the corners of the house, and the birds are feeding frantically from my feeder. If you are having a day like mine, it's a good day to stay home, get out the instrument, and start working out some of the songs people are posting to this thread. |
Subject: RE: Pretty songs From: kendall Date: 01 Feb 11 - 01:27 PM You listed some of my favorites that slipped my mind. |
Subject: RE: Pretty songs From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 01 Feb 11 - 01:52 PM Good. I'm glad the effort paid off. Have you ever had it happen that you know many, many songs, but when someone asks for a song, you can't think of any? It's as if the songs are in a mental filing cabinet, and you don't have access to that filing cabinet at the moment. That's what happened here, and then I got the idea of looking at my collection. I have chords for all those tunes. |
Subject: RE: Pretty songs From: Little Robyn Date: 01 Feb 11 - 01:56 PM Riversong by Paul Metsers. It's a bit hard to find but it's on his record and now CD 'In the hurricane's eye'. Actually, a lot of Paul's songs have a pretty tune, with a very singable chorus. For example, 'Farewell to the gold' but that one is more than 'just plain pretty'. Robyn |

Subject: RE: Pretty songs From: Allan C. Date: 02 Feb 11 - 05:57 AM I'm afraid Juanita lost all its appeal when Don Knotts sang it on The Andy Griffith Show. Many of my favorite pretty songs have their roots in The Wagoner's Lad or The Water is Wide; but Carrikfergus will always top my list. |
Subject: RE: Pretty songs From: GUEST,Desi C Date: 02 Feb 11 - 08:44 AM It's a good description, I'd class as pretty, Irish songs like The Spinning Wheel, Rose Of Tralee, Ringsend Rose, the soft lilting type of ballads |

And, hey, while we're at it, if you ever get a chance to hear the American, Larry Hanks, since "THE LAST WAGON", you're in for a serious treat! |
