Sorry about that. I pushed the wrong button. Anyway, I am looking for the lyrics to a song I heard this weekend at a festival in Avoca, IA. The tune is the same as the "Crawdad Hole", but the words start out, "How many biscuits can you eat... 49 and a pound of meat..." does anyone know these. I will be performing for a group of 2-3 graders on Thursday, and this would be a fun song for them to learn.

Thanks, Chris

Hi, Gdane - can you post the lyrics here for all of us? This is one I might be able to use, too.

How very many songs have this same tune...

a Georgia Sea Island version of "Tell Old Bill"

"The Crawdad Song"

"Mama Don't Allow No Singin' Round Here"

some versions of "Frog Went a-Courting"

Woody Guthrie and the Almanac Singers song "Pittsburg Town Is A Smoky Old Town"

(I used to do 'em all in a sing along medley for young kids & in school shows to show 'em what the oral tradition process was all about---how it worked on altering the songs. As the last song in the medley I'd tell 'em we were going to create our own folksong right here and now. I'd take lines from each of the previously sung songs and it would come out as:

Tell old bill when he gets home, this morning,
That frog went a courtin' and he did ride, unh huh,
So you get a line and I'll get a pole,
'Cause we don't care what mama don't 'low
In Pittsburg,
Lord God, in Pittsburg.

It always was fun to do.)

The following words are taken from Scott Wiseman's arrangement. Have another version on a Stringbean recording which I will try to capture tomorrow. Alternate words which are used in some versions were put in ()

How Many Biscuits Can You Eat

How many biscuits can you eat this morning
How many biscuits can you eat this morning
How many biscuits can you eat
Buttered hot with 'lasses sweet,
(alt: 49 and a ham of meat)
This morning, this evening, right now.

Make my coffee good and strong this morning,
Make my coffee good and strong this morning,
Make my coffee good and strong
Keep on bringing your biscuits along,
This morning, this evening, right now.

Ain't no use of me working so hard this morning,
Ain't no use of me working so hard this morning,
Ain't no use of me working so hard
I got a sweetie in a white man's (the rich folks)yard
This morning, this evening, right now.

Killed a chicken and she saved me the wing this morning,
Killed a chicken and she saved me the wing this morning,
Killed a chicken and she saved me the wing
Thinks I'm a-working but I aint doin' a thing
This morning, this evening, right now.

Love my wife and I love my babe this morning,
Love my wife and I love my babe this evening,
Love my wife and I love my baby
Love my biscuit sopped in gravy,
This morning, this evening, right now.

Line Breaks
fixed.

Here are the words from the Stringbean recording. There may be a double meaning in some of the versions. This one is pretty much about biscuits.

How many biscuits can you eat, this mornin',
How many biscuits can you eat, this evenin',
How many biscuits can you eat,
Forty-nine and a ham of meat,
This mornin', this evening, right now.

This first verse becomes the chorus to be sung after the remaining verses.

When you see me looking straight, this mornin',
When you see me looking straight, this evening,
When you see me looking straight,
Bet you can see my biscuit plate,
This mornin', this evening, right now.

Wake up Sal, you slept too late, this mornin',
Wake up Sal, you slept too late, this evening,
Wake up Sal, you slept too late,
There are no biscuits on my plate,
This mornin', this evening, right now.

HTML line breaks corrected. (Changed "bk" to "br".) --JoeClone, 5-Apr-03.
