I saw him play once Ringer. He was a very fine guitarist and he tended to perform long monologues (which were very funny) to guitar accompaniment. The song you quoted from appeared on Fred Wedlock's seventies LP, "Frolics". I can recall a couple of other verses from that song, but I believe that someone has already posted it here.

just going back to what you said about Chum/Barry gigging with the Higglers, well I found a band called the Higglers online but my mum said she didn't think they're the same Higglers Chum was in as apparently the Higglers he was in were a vocal group with no instruments...

Any ideas ?

I was at school near Nottingham in the 60s. I never actually saw Dave Turner, but some of my mates did, revered him, and the musical ones passed on some of his songs.

One of which was another song about R Hood, beginning

Robin was a bloke who owned many bows
He kept them all nice and clean
He died in his prime at the age of 99
Of a bad case of eyeball gangrene

And another, on a completely different subject had a line

There's a Dalek and it's mating with my distbin...

Happy days. Sad to hear Dave Turner has died.

this guy is my dad but i've only met him once when i was around 25 and i didnt bother getting his number or anything...

Never heard of this group the Higglers, are they still gigging ? I wouldn't mind meeting him again before he dies !

OK.... Yes, I used to sing this song in the folk clubs. It was written by Nottingham local Dave Turner, who passed away last year.

In my senior years (OK 66) I couldn't remember the words in full, but I did remember that I had a casette tape from a recording I made for Radio Nottingham in February 1972. I just found the tape, and amazingly it still plays.

If I remember correctly, (a miracle in itself), this song, which did refer to "Jackie Pownall's", used to be sung around the Nottingham folk clubs in the mid-seventies by a local singer named Rod Neep. There is a web site for a singer/instrument maker of this name, but with the passing of the years I can't tell if he is one and the same. The origins of the song lie in the fact that every year during the Nottingham University Students "Karnival" it was usual for the students to take the arrow from Robin Hood's statue, located by the walls of the Castle and demand a ransom from the city council for its return. The inference in the song being that if the council were reluctant to pay for the arrow's return it would be sold for scrap. Jackie Pownall was just one member of a well-known local family who dominated the local scrap metal trade.

I am trying to get the words for a song written in the 60s - 70s about the theft of Robin Hoods arrows and bows from his statue that ended up in Jackie Parrels scrap yard in Nottingham
The lyric / chorus was something like
