Subject: Lyr Req: Jackie Parrels scrap yard From: GUEST,John Siddall Date: 03 Feb 11 - 07:04 PM I am trying to get the words for a song written in the 60s - 70s about the theft of Robin Hoods arrows and bows from his statue that ended up in Jackie Parrels scrap yard in Nottingham The lyric / chorus was something like "somebody swiped his arrers - somebody swiped his bow, Did all his gear that once was here to Jackie Parrels go " Any help appreciated |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jackie Parrels scrap yard From: Richard Spencer Date: 04 Feb 11 - 08:17 AM I don't know the song, but my family mythology always condemned my childhood room as resembling Jackie Pownall's scrapyard. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jackie Parrels scrap yard From: GUEST,GuestSG Date: 04 Feb 11 - 09:38 AM If I remember correctly, (a miracle in itself), this song, which did refer to "Jackie Pownall's", used to be sung around the Nottingham folk clubs in the mid-seventies by a local singer named Rod Neep. There is a web site for a singer/instrument maker of this name, but with the passing of the years I can't tell if he is one and the same. The origins of the song lie in the fact that every year during the Nottingham University Students "Karnival" it was usual for the students to take the arrow from Robin Hood's statue, located by the walls of the Castle and demand a ransom from the city council for its return. The inference in the song being that if the council were reluctant to pay for the arrow's return it would be sold for scrap. Jackie Pownall was just one member of a well-known local family who dominated the local scrap metal trade. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jackie Pownalls scrap yard From: GUEST Date: 04 Feb 11 - 02:01 PM I have emailed the Rod neep shown as an instrument maker as it does look like her was performing in the 60s and 70 s so fingers crossed if its the right guy Any further help appreciated |

Subject: Lyr Add: ROBIN HOOD SONG (Dave Turner) From: RodNeep Date: 04 Feb 11 - 05:49 PM OK.... Yes, I used to sing this song in the folk clubs. It was written by Nottingham local Dave Turner, who passed away last year. In my senior years (OK 66) I couldn't remember the words in full, but I did remember that I had a casette tape from a recording I made for Radio Nottingham in February 1972. I just found the tape, and amazingly it still plays. ROBIN HOOD SONG Words by Dave Turner (Music a sort of version of Leadbelly's "Irene Goodnight") Chorus: Somebody's swiped his arrer Somebody's swiped his bow Did all his gear what once was here to Jackie Pownall's go Well the Princess she unveiled him Exposed him to the town It didn't take us very long To strip poor Robin down. chorus Well they put up some fancy searchlights To guard him while we were in bed The theives they left the arrers alone They swiped the lamps instead chorus Old Robin was a good shot At least that's what they said But it seems he's lost more arrers Since he has been dead chorus Now some of us have got our flick knives And clubs made out of lead But some have got bronze arrers Crammed down their trousers legs chorus [One more time for Maid Marion] chorus. That's it folks. I am surprised that someone still remembers my singing in the folk clubs! Cheers Rod |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Robin Hood Song (Dave Turner) From: Ringer Date: 23 Jun 11 - 10:24 AM I was at school near Nottingham in the 60s. I never actually saw Dave Turner, but some of my mates did, revered him, and the musical ones passed on some of his songs. One of which was another song about R Hood, beginning Robin was a bloke who owned many bows And another, on a completely different subject had a line There's a Dalek and it's mating with my distbin... Happy days. Sad to hear Dave Turner has died. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Robin Hood Song (Dave Turner) From: GUEST,ivan the tenable Date: 03 Jul 11 - 11:51 AM FAO Dave Sutherland - just going back to what you said about Chum/Barry gigging with the Higglers, well I found a band called the Higglers online but my mum said she didn't think they're the same Higglers Chum was in as apparently the Higglers he was in were a vocal group with no instruments... Any ideas ? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Robin Hood Song (Dave Turner) From: alanabit Date: 03 Jul 11 - 12:15 PM I saw him play once Ringer. He was a very fine guitarist and he tended to perform long monologues (which were very funny) to guitar accompaniment. The song you quoted from appeared on Fred Wedlock's seventies LP, "Frolics". I can recall a couple of other verses from that song, but I believe that someone has already posted it here. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Robin Hood Song (Dave Turner) From: alanabit Date: 03 Jul 11 - 12:15 PM Incidentally, Dave Turner passed away a year or two ago. There was a thread about him here. |
