Subject: Lyr Req: The Growing Up Tree
From: GUEST,Becky
Date: 09 Feb 11 - 12:22 PM

The song started like this:

Oh Julie and Judy and Janie and Joan
were all very little and wish they were grown.
So they got together and all did agree
That they would go hunting the Growing Up Tree.

They looked high and low In the streets and the park
They looked in the light and they looked in the dark.
Till they met a wise woman who told them that she
Would help them to hunt for the growing up tree.

There is at least one more verse to the song and perhaps a chorus?

THE GROWING UP TREE
(Lyrics by Joe Darion, music by George Kleinsinger)

Judy and Julie and Janie and Joan
Were all very little and wished they were grown,
So they got together and all did agree
That they would go hunting the Growing Up Tree.

They looked in the street and they looked in the park.
They looked in the light and they looked in the dark,
'Til they met a Wise Woman who told them that she
Would help them to hunt for the Growing Up Tree.

The Growing Up Tree, the Growing Up Tree,
The wonderful, mystical Growing Up Tree.

They hunted for many a year and a day.
The Wise Woman smiled as they went on their way,
For she knew as she watched them grow wise and grow tall
That the Growing Up Tree grew inside of them all.

The Growing Up Tree grows inside of you, too.
Make it bloom with the things that you learn and you do,
And, wonder of wonders, you soon will be grown
Like Judy and Julie and Janie and Joan.

Come along now with me. A Girl Scout you'll be,
And together we'll hunt for the Growing Up Tree.

There was another verse - it used to run in a Girl Scout commercial back in the 1960s

"Oh the growing up tree is not easy to find,
You must hunt with your heart
You must hunt with your mind.
And wonder of wonders, you soon will be grown,
Like Judy and Julie and Janie and Joan."

I've had this darned song running through my head for about a week now.

We have been singing this song to our Girl Scout troop since they were in 2nd grade. They are now entering 7th grade, and they still ask us to sing it to them. I would LOVE to acquire a recording of it so that I could use that recording to accompany a slide show that we're putting together for the girls as they start their sixth year of Girl Scouting together. How can I get my hands on one? Please direct me to a website or other resource. and, THANK YOU!

So great to finally find this. I spent hours one night and not even a clue, then out of the blue I wrote all the works I knew into google and somehow this time I hit it. Lots of versions of this song, few with the commercial lines..not yet found an audio of it. However if I do I'll be back. Thanks everyone for the share.

To this day, I fondly remember singing "A Growing Up Tree" with my Mother (who is now 87 and still has a beautiful Soprano voice) when I was just 3 years old! I recall bits and pieces of that early 1960's "Girl Scout TV Commercial" when it aired during morning cartoons on our old black & white!! However, my Mom would HARMONIZE with me while I sang it and the lyrics we remember went like this:
"The Growing Up Tree is not easy to find...
You must search with your heart, you must search with your mind?
You must learn to be patient and learn to be kind...
For the 'Growing Up Tree' is not easy to find."

I've yet to find the TV commercial on YouTube and would love to to see it again!
BTW, I was a "CAMPFIRE GIRL!"

I strictly remember this song from the Girl Scout commercial on TV.

I never was any kind of scout when I was a kid. My parents did not send me to camp.

Actually I only remember certain parts of the song. I don't think the TV commercial had the entire song. Sometimes the commercial would not be in it's entirety. Back then I recall commercials were sometimes cut short from their original longer versions.

It was such a tune that was melancholy, endearing, nostalgic, and haunting in the respect that it just grabs your emotions.

Without the internet there is no way that I would find the lyrics or anything about it. It would be hidden in some old dusty film archive of TV commercials. I think that the TV commercial did not have the exact same lyrics as the original song. I actually did not know that it was some original song. I thought it was just made for the commercial.
I think that the "Camp Fire Girls" also had a commercial with a song that was less like a hymn and just slightly like a rock and roll song.

WorldCat.org lists only one library that holds the sheet music—the Ohio Historical Society—and it's not viewable online. It is described thus:

THE GROWING-UP TREE
Lyrics by Joe Darion; music by George Kleinsinger.
New York, N.Y. : Sam Fox Publishing Company, ©1963.

The Growing Up Tree was a GSUSA recruiting song from the 1960's. It ran as an animated story song. The complete song lyrics are:

The Growing Up Tree
Joe Darion and George Kleinsinger

Now Julie and Judy and Janie and Joan
Were all very little and wished they were grown
So they got together and all did agree,
That they would go hunting the Growing Up Tree
They looked high and low in the street and the park
They looked in the light and they looked in the dark
Til they met a wise woman who told them that she
Would help them to hunt for the Growing Up Tree

The Growing Up Tree, the Growing Up Tree
The wonderful, mystical, Growing Up Tree

The wise woman smiled and she gave them her hand
She said, "Let us join in a bright, happy band.
The Growing Up Tree we will hunt every day
And we'll learn about living as we go our way.
For the Growing Up Tree is not easy to find
You must hunt with your heart, you must hunt with your mind,
You must learn to be patient and learn to be wise
For the thing that you seek is a wonderful prize."

The Growing Up Tree, the Growing Up Tree
The wonderful, mystical, Growing Up Tree

They hunted for many a year and a day
And the wise woman smiled as they went on their way
She knew as she watched them grow wise and grow tall
That the Growing Up Tree grew inside of them all.
Yes, the Growing Up Tree lives inside of you too
Make it bloom with the things that you learn and you do
And wonder of wonders you soon will be grown
Like Julie and Judy and Janie and Joan.

Come along now with me, a Girl Scout you'll be
And together we'll hunt for the Growing Up Tree.

The Growing Up Tree, the Growing Up Tree
The wonderful, mystical, Growing Up Tree

I have my own saga of searching for this song. My whole decade in Scouts I "looked high and low" for the song without success. I found myself at a Debbie Reynolds show in Reno and sent a note backstage as I knew Mrs. Reynolds had been a troop leader and the National spokesperson for the Follow the Piper project. Three weeks later I received a handwritten postcard from her written from her show in Las Vegas saying she didn't know, but check with National (GSUSA). I had already done that without success. In 1986 I went to an all-adult GS volunteer retreat in the Santa Cruz mountains where a visiting council's singing group (The Daisy Low Notes) were attending - AND HAD IT!

If you want the guitar chords, they are:

    C               Am        F         G7
Now Julie and Judy and Janie and Joan
      C               Am         F                   G7
Were all very little and wished they were grown
    C              Am         F            G7
So they got together and all did agree,
       C            F                G7            C
That they would go hunting the Growing Up Tree
They looked high and low in the street and the park
They looked in the light and they looked in the dark
Til they met a wise woman who told them that she
Would help them to hunt for the Growing Up Tree

                        F        C           F              G7
The Growing Up Tree, the Growing Up Tree
                      C                F         G7              C
The wonderful, mystical, Growing Up Tree

There are records on Amazon/Ebay/etc. One is a 45 with 2 versions, one is "NOW Favorites" recorded by The Auroras, and one is a Nanette Guilford recording.
