I have heard in the last few hours that Jim McKenna, stalwart of the Glasgow and Lanarkshire folk music scene passed away on Thursday 10th February 2011.

Jim was a songwright, singer, concert promoter, organiser.

He was passionate and outspoken about music and life itself.

I believe the funeral will be at Daldowie Crematorium on Tuesday 15th, at 12:00.

He'll be missed sorely.

Big Jim sang a Clova song one night at the session in the Uisge. The biggest compliment anyone could have given us. Cheers Jim, I never did tell you how much that meant.

Yes, Jim was a great man who made a wonderful contribution to the folk world in Scotland and encouraged many young people too.

I've just heard that Jim McKenna passed away very recently. Jim was a tremendous singer and interpreter of songs from all genres, and when he put his mind to it, a great songwriter too. He had been unwell for some time, but still appeared from time to time in the Uisge Beatha on Woodlands Road on Sunday evenings. A real fighter!

Here's a Youtube link to him singing Supermarket Wine in Glasgow in 2008.

I'll miss him. So will a lot of people... RIP

The "CD of the Week" on Celtic Music Radio will be Jim McKenna's "Humourous Observations"

On Saturday 23rd April from 12 noon and 12 midnight and Monday 25th April from 6.00pm (UK time - GMT+1), you can hear our interview with Jim McKenna about his Humourous Observations CD which we are repeating as Album of the Week.

Jim McKenna, who died aged 70 on Thursday 10 February, was an extremely talented singer-songwriter from Lanarkshire with a wicked sense of humour, BIG heart and time for anyone.

The interview is also available on our Listen Again page on our site so you can enjoy "Big Jim's" thoughts on music and life in general.

Unfortunately, Humourous Observations is not commercially available, but you can hear tracks from the CD throughout the week on Celtic Music Radio and on The Morning Mix with Alex Jenkins and Homeward Bound with Bob McWilliam (Mon-Thurs) and Gordon Hotchkiss (Friday).

The programme was originally broadcast in November 2009.

1530kHz around Glasgow and online at http://www.celticmusicradio.net./
