Subject: RE: Worldwide Singaround thread overflow From: Mrrzy Date: 13 Jul 22 - 10:23 PM I forgot to say each verse repeats the previous idea, thus by the end ... I called my shack, Break my back And I called my cow, No milk now And I called my wife, Run for your life And I called my son, My work's done But the land was sweet and good... And thanks for the well-wishes. |

Subject: RE: Worldwide Singaround thread overflow From: MoorleyMan Date: 05 Jul 22 - 06:02 PM You're in good company, Mrrzy! Fred Maslen sang this very song near the start of the singaround! Hope you have a swift recovery, all best wishes. |
Subject: RE: Worldwide Singaround thread overflow From: Mrrzy Date: 05 Jul 22 - 04:08 PM I called on on the 4th of July from the emergency room, which is why I couldn't always listen nor could I sing. My back didn't just go out, it took my left leg with it. Anyway, if I *coulda* sung, here's what I woulda sung. One of my favorite I Love America songs, set to a haunting melody, and sweetened by the immigrant's point of view. Also, the one line that just spoke to me, dans ma douleur. Not sure whose version this is, from my folks' records: When I first came to this land, I was not a wealthy man So I got myself a shack, and I did what I could. And I called my shack “Break My Back.” But the land was sweet and good and I did what I could. [Each verse repeats this form, with a different acquisition and nickname] ...cow...No Milk Now ...wife... Run For Your Life ...son ...My Work's Done But the land was sweet and good, and I did what I could. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom NOW! From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Jan 21 - 08:26 PM Looks like we had 53 people today, and it was a lovely gathering. Somebody requested that we not sing political songs, and I said that was not a request I could honor. That person left. That's too bad. We had a few political songs, and a lot of others. I would say that the atmosphere wasn't overly political, but we generally don't suppress anything. We let people choose whatever songs they want to sing. We limit conversation so we can get in lots of singing, but we really can't ban political songs. Thanks for coming, everyone. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Nov 20 - 11:02 PM Another delightful singaround. I'm glad Tim/Voyager came and sang the version of 'Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night' that was passed on through his family. I think I'll take up that version myself, but I wanted to hear if from somebody who knew it first. Such wonderful singing and such nice people, every Monday. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Mrrzy Date: 02 Nov 20 - 10:18 AM Oh I got levity planned. And some truly foul language. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 01 Nov 20 - 08:14 AM I've noticed that their are quite a few parodies about trump floating round. I know we don't do themes, but with the looming election and the gloom and doom around the world if anyone has any they can share it might lend itself to some much needed levity... On a selfish note, preferably after I am able to get to the session. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Oct 20 - 12:23 AM Hi, Everyone - I hope you will be able to join us for Monday's Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on 26 Oct It will be at the usual 8 PM London time, but an hour later than usual in the rest of the world (1 PM Los Angeles, 4 PM New York) - due to the vagaries of the change from Daylight Savings Time. We'll be back in sync next week. Could be interesting - Casey and I have been threatened with an electric power blackout, but Noreen and others have volunteered to fill in if we can't make it. See you Monday. I sent out the email just now. If you'd like to be included on the email list, contact me, joe@mudcat.org For security reasons, we change the URL/address of the singaround every week, and post the URL here in this thread for only a short time. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: leeneia Date: 22 Oct 20 - 12:16 PM Thanks, Sarah. I'm glad you liked it. I thought my voice sounded pretty bad, (it being ragweed season) but now I think that since we are right on top of our own voices, so to speak, we hear minor imperfections that listeners do not. I encountered the same thing with a recorder once. I made a tape of myself, and I sounded better than I thought I did. But I wish I had a clear, reliable voice like you, Schlomo and Noreen. ============== As for the other matter, it's hard to believe that 80 or 90% of the group had an errand at the same time. And attention doesn't have to be avid; it's enough if a person moves a little once in a while. But that's over now. People were back for the last session. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Oct 20 - 07:05 PM It people are singing and having connection problems, I will sometimes switch off their video so the sound comes through better. This is not meant as an insult (usually ;-) They should feel free to switch their video back on once they're finished singing. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Tattie Bogle Date: 21 Oct 20 - 06:45 PM The other thing is, that if people are having problems with their broadband connection, it helps to switch off the video and just use the audio, so don't take it personally if people are not all avidly watching: or they might be having their supper and don't want to be seen stuffing their faces...! I might bring my knitting next week, or do my ironing! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Waddon Pete Date: 21 Oct 20 - 04:50 PM Hear hear! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: pattyClink Date: 21 Oct 20 - 04:06 PM Oh, leeneia, don't despair and think people aren't interested in hearing the other singers. The session lasts 5 hours, and that's a very long time to sit in rapt attention with an encouraging look on one's face. I cut my video every now and then while I take a break for a snack or bathroom break or stretch, or just be 'at ease', and I'd rather mute my video and still hear the singer, than have the singer see me scratch myself or fork down some food. I think you just had the bad luck to be in the spotlight when too many people were taking a break. We love hearing you!!! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: Sarah the flute Date: 21 Oct 20 - 02:46 PM And it was a very lovely song you sang and well sung too on Monday! I do try to stay live on Zoom unless it is absolutely necessary to switch off video because I think this is what you would do in a real folk club if you spent your evening there ....plus you never know what you might miss. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: leeneia Date: 21 Oct 20 - 02:31 PM Once upon a time, my voice teacher gave me a tip about stage fright. She said there is bound to be at least one person in the audience who wishes you well and looks friendly. Focus on that person. Now, the week before last, I was singing and looking for that person, and I realized to my dismay that most of the faces I saw were not people, but photographs. I suppose they were people who didn't want to listen to others, just to sing themselves. So they ambled off to walk the dog or balance their checkbook, leaving their lifeless picture in their place. Pfui. Last Monday, I am happy to say, there were many more live people in place, and I felt better about singing my song. Keep up the good work, everybody. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: Tim Chesterton Date: 20 Oct 20 - 03:25 AM Bit of shameless self-promotion here: Thanks to those who were saying nice things about my own original tune for 'Cold Blow and the Rainy Night' at the singaround today. If you like it, it's on my CD 'Folk Songs and Renovations.' You can get the single track here. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: Noreen Date: 19 Oct 20 - 04:43 PM Thirty-four of us in here now. A great night is being had by all! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround-Normal time this week From: Noreen Date: 18 Oct 20 - 01:23 PM Ah no, that was not a puzzled response, it was meant to be a wry smile! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround-Normal time this week From: Noreen Date: 18 Oct 20 - 01:16 PM ?? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Oct 20 - 02:36 PM Well, I screwed that up, as Bev Praver gently told me. The discrepancy in time changes happens on Monday, October 26. And on THAT day, the Singaround will start at 1 PM Pacific Time and 4 PM Eastern, and 8 PM London time. But this coming Monday is October 19, and it will be at the usual times. Sorry for the confusion. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Richard Mellish Date: 17 Oct 20 - 07:33 AM > Isn't London eight hours later than Los Angeles? (or am I overlooking some Standard vs Daylight Savings thing?) Normally it's eight hours, but not in the brief period when one is on daylight saving and the other isn't. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: GerryM Date: 17 Oct 20 - 06:08 AM Isn't London eight hours later than Los Angeles? (or am I overlooking some Standard vs Daylight Savings thing?) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Oct 20 - 02:33 AM Because we have a number of singers in the UK who come in late, I'm going to schedule the Singaround according to London time this coming Monday. So the Singaround will start as usual at 8 PM London time, but at 1 PM Los Angeles Time and 4 PM New York time. I'll be sending out the email in a few minutes. See you Monday. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Felipa Date: 14 Oct 20 - 05:15 PM Joe, Ireland follows Greenwich time, but in France etc. it is an hour different and if they have "summer time" ("daylight savings time" in US). There was talk of the E.U. doing away with seasonal time changes for member states in future. re themes, I suggested having occasional theme nights, not weekly and that the theme would not be obligatory. I did enjoy the themed sessions at the virtual Getaway. There the theme was pretty much obligatory but in some cases very widely interpreted. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Oct 20 - 03:46 PM I just got an email from Pelagie, asking what time we'll be starting this coming Monday. The UK goes to standard time this Sunday, 25 October. I suppose the same applies to Ireland and the rest of the EU. Am I correct? The US goes to standard time on Sunday, November 1. The math confounds me here. This coming Monday, if we start the singaround at 8 PM London time (which is what I'm inclined to do), what time will it be in California? -Joe, puzzled- It appears from the converter below that on October 26, it will be 8 PM London time and 1 PM California time. https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?iso=20201026T200000&p1=136&p2=4962 |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Oct 20 - 03:00 PM Hi, Felipa I go to another weekly singaround that has themes. It can be nice, bu I'm not inclined to require it for the Mudcat Singaround. I see singers often inspire each other and carry a theme along, and I think I prefer that sort of spontaneity. Cheers! -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 14 Oct 20 - 01:37 PM This Monday will be my last in the folk 'wilderness' this time it will be me in transit arriving at Gatwick about 10:30 pm London time, then 2-3 hours to get home. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Tattie Bogle Date: 13 Oct 20 - 06:40 PM We had quite a lot of autumnal/seasonal/October songs on our local Zoom session tonight, and later this month will be Hallowe'en! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Felipa Date: 13 Oct 20 - 05:12 PM I suggest it would be nice to sometimes have a theme for the night. It wouldn't be obligatory; but if people are invited in advance to sing a song relating to a given topic, I expect many of the singers would oblige. |
