I too have a random password generator and every time I would copy the generated password and paste it into the password field on my registration page, there would be an extraneous space character appended to the end of the password. I want to thank Mr Red for sharing the link to his hash code generator page. When I viewed the source for that page I saw that he had a textarea tag in one of his table td tags. My password is generated inside a single cell table td tag, so I decided to try a textarea tag inside my td tag. HALLELUA! It works like a charm. Now I can select the generated password any way I want (triple click, swipe or right click + select all) then copy and paste it into my password field without getting the trailing space. The textarea doesn’t look as nice as the pain td; BUT IT WORKS. John |

Early Macs using the Motorola processor used "little-endian" encoding, with the "least significant bit first" when read as bit strings, while DOS-based machines were "big-endian," with "most significant bit first" when reading as bit strings. (Or maybe it was 'tother way around?) Conversions were required when transferring files from one to the other. Macs also allowed 4-character "file extensions" while DOS used only 3, so jpeg Mac files were jpg files in DOS (if migrated successfully), requiring some additional "translation." Rather elaborate "conversion filters" were required to transfer between the two systems, and the most frequent result was "garbage" in the transferred files, even if they were partially readable. "Portability" between sytems has been greatly improved in recent years, but there are still occasional failures. John |

My late Father was posted to East Africa in WW2. Before he left the UK, the army enrolled him in a 6 month, total immersion course in Swahili, at the end of which he was a fluent speaker. When I was growing up at home he would often use Swahili words & phrases around the house...calling me if he needed help with some chores...wanting to know where I was, that sort of thing. I can remember only a fraction of the things he used to say... it remains an endearing & enduring memory of a much loved Father. Nigel. |

It really does seem to be a matter of 'swiping' very carefully, ensuring NO overhang at either end. I had not appreciated how easy it could be to accidentally create extra, unwanted 'characters' with an over zealous swipe! Problem solved from my p.o.v. Thanks once again for all the helpful advice. Try pasting to a text editor between two known visible characters and see what gets dumped there. I have seen (PC) filenames get awkward characters usually after saving them from a Mac. Editing the name doesn't sovle the problem of reading the files either. One annoyance is on one of my web pages. the hash code display and generator. Because the hash code is in a table cells and centered the is always one space in front of the code which isn't there when you highlight and copy. See code generator page and click on Euro Accents (for instance) - copy and paste the code above and a space appears. (Any browser) |

Did it work correctly previously? What do you see if you paste the pw to an ordinary text editor? Does the error occur only with particular passwords? ... What JHW writes about is an ordinary error by the author of the web page. Anyone can produce such errors at Mudcat ;-). |

I think Stower has hit the proverbial nail on the head. I copied the password very carefully, not my customary, somewhat flamboyant 'blue swipe', pasted the password, but before logging in, counted the dots...there were 12, the right number. Hit login & all was fine, no more reject messages. As a final check, I logged out, re-copied the password sloppily with a little 'blue overhang' at each end. And surprise, surprise, I'd made 15 dots. Needless to say I didn't attempt to login! Looks like Stower's point about the white space being taken for a character is correct, certainly in this case. Lesson learned: "When copying a randomly generated password, take great care to avoid any overlapping with your 'blue swipe'. As a final check, count the dots in your login box by deleting/counting each individual dot. Big thank you to everyone who has posted (Well done Stower!) TTFN, Nigel. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Copy & Paste errors From: JohnInKansas Date: 13 Feb 11 - 03:22 AM It is "normal" for Windows Copy/Paste to add spaces at one or both ends of text that you paste. The extra space(s) are usually part of what the password parser sees as the password, so a pasted password is likely to be rejected. If you copy from a bulleted list in Word, you shouldn't be able to "select" the bullet(s), but "bulleted" is a format that's recorded in the paragraph mark at the end of the paragraph, so if you copy the paragraph marker you've copied the format and you should expect it to paste as "bulleted." You can select a paragraph mark from an unbulleted paragraph and copy it, select the mark on a bulleted line and paste, and the bullet goes away, but that may just chase the bullet to the next line. Before the appearance of the "format paint" function, the easiest way to make the format of a paragraph match another differently formatted one sometimes was to copy the mark from the good one and paste it on top of the mark at the one you wanted changed. If you can select the text you want to copy from a bulleted section without including a paragraph mark you can paste it elsewhere without getting a bullet on it. Of course that means you can only paste one "almost paragraph" at a time. John |

From time to time I need to copy an item from that list into another document. I found it was impossible to copy an item without also copying the bullet and a tab character, followed by the text I want. This isn't much of a problem for me. I can easily delete the bullet+tab after copying. But it could be confusing if you couldn't see what's happening. I recommend pasting your password into a Word document so you can see exactly what it contains. If you click the paragraph symbol (¶) at the top of the Word screen, it will reveal any hidden spaces, tab characters, end-of-line characters, end-of-paragraph characters, etc. |

(A campaign site against the UK gov selling off our Forestry Commission) Clicking their link brought up a 'firefox can't find the server' message but a friend spotted that though their link text said http://www.38degrees.org.uk/save-our-forests when it was clicked it appeared in the address box as '38degrees..org.uk' ie an extra . which scuppered it. Beyond my technicality. (Of course if you're in the uk and don't want the Forestry Commission sold off you might like to sign that petition here Save the Forestry Commission ) |

I used my password generator, copied the results & pasted the new password into the appropriate box, to be confronted by a succession of error messages that the password was incorrect. The generated password was 12 elements long & with mounting frustration, I don't know why but I decided to count the number of dots in the password box. Would you believe it, there were 13, not 12. I repeated the whole process & this time there were 14 dots! It was only when I typed in each of the twelve elements one by one that everything worked as it should. I've never come across this before...copy & paste has always been a routine, reliable operation. Any one had a similar experience...shed any light on what's going on? Nigel (Mac user) |
