Nancy Spain appeared on Christy Moore's 1976 self titled album. Here are the lyrics from “The Christy Moore Songbook”:

NANCY SPAIN
Written by Barney Rush

Of all the stars that ever shone, not one does twinkle like your pale blue eyes
Like golden corn at harvest time your hair
Sailing in my boat the wind gently blows and fills my sails
Your sweet scented breath is everywhere

Daylight peeping through the curtains of the passing nighttime is your smile
The sun in the sky is like your laugh
Come back to me my Nancy linger for just a little while
Since you left these shores I know no peace nor joy

(CHORUS) No matter where I wander I'm still haunted by your name
The portrait of your beauty stays the same
Standing by the ocean, wondering where you've gone, if you'll return again
Where is the ring I gave to Nancy Spain?

On the day in spring when the snow starts to melt and streams to flow
With the birds I'll sing to you a song
In the while I'll wander down by bluebell grove Where wildflowers grow
And hope my lovely Nancy will return.

From an earlier thread which provided lyrics for Donegal Donny and Nancy Spain I have always wondered whether there ia a connection between Nancy Spain and the lesbian activist of the same name? Without trying to be funny, wasthis originally meant to be sung by a woman - I have only heard male renditions.

I am on a desparate search for the chords/sheet music for the Christy Moore version of Barney Rush's "Nancy Spain." I noticed an earlier thread where someone responded to a request for the lyrics, quoted from Christy's songbook. Any help would surely fill me with profound appreciation! T'anx very much!

In "The Christy Moore Songbook " (1984), Moore writes:

"I first heard this song in 1968 in Jersey in the Channel Islands where it was sung by the author Barney Rush, originally from Sallynoggin (in Dublin) but now living in Germany. Barney recorded it for me and I had the tape in a drawer for about ten years before I started to sing it.I suppose it has become the best known song in my repertoire"

The suggested association is unlikely

Hello all, just my 2p worth. On Christy Moores album "Live" at the Point Depot he introduces this song as the song "about the daughyer of the man from Scapa Flow". I would love to hear more of the origins of this wonderful song. Maybe some of our friends from Scotland could help. Noel P Browne.

Without entering the words, try G,C and D. If you are familiar with the air then you should have no trouble working it out with these 3 chords. Regards, Noel P.

You can find the lyrics and full chords for Nancy Spain on www.unitedirelandtripod.com great site with hundreds of well known and many rare Irish songs. the song is not about the writer and journalist of the same name by the way. I'll be performing it at the Daisy Roots Folk club in Coseley West Mid's tomorrow (29/07/09) if anyone would like to come along, free admission and open mic' sessions every Wednesday

Took me about an hour to work the thing out in open G from the record.

The Man From Scapa Flow is a novel (1933) by Captain Taprell Dorling, DSO, RN. Maybe you'd have to read it to find out more about his daughter.

Hi, I am hoping to record a mini Album in aid of an Animal Rescue centre and would love to know who to contact to get the permission of people to include a song of theirs on it. One that I would like to do is Nancy Spain,   We would not be making any money from it but I still don't want to come a cropper with someone so how do I do it correctly? Any help much appreciated.

Many thanks

Steph

Yes the daughter of the man from Scapa Flow is actually my Aunt! My Dad was a Clare man and his father my grandfather fought in WW2. He defended the island of Scapa Flow from German U Boats coming to attack the Orkneys Islands. Anyway when he returned home he was know as the Scapa Flow man. Christy had a crush on my Dad's sister my aunt and he had a dance with her one time as Christy worked in Clare for many years. Anyway thats why he says Nancy Spain the daughter of the man from Scapa Flow!

A lot of water under the bridge since this thread started 15 years ago. I no longer travel the country (Ireland) in a company car, repairing broken hardware, trying at all times to get home at a decent hour to see my wife and children. I am now a very mature aging student, on Erasmus in the Czech Republic, nice country and very nice people and I am returning to the Mudcat after an absense of about 10 years. It's great to see the Mudcat is still active and relevant, and what's more, still being updated and added to.
I asked the question all those years ago, 'Who was the daughter of the man from Scapa Flow?' The answer took a while in arriving, but arrive it did. Well done and how nice. You know, reading something like that, it touches a spot, it's personal, it's nice, it's lovely and great that you share this piece of private, intimate knowledge with a wider community. Well done and thanks. That made my evening.

I guess it would be hard to get confirmation that Barney just put 'Nancy Spain' in the song because he had read her name in the newspaper and wanted to hide who it was really about.

Has anyone written a song about the actual Nancy Spain? Fascinating woman!
