For devotees of the Old Swan Band...

I bumped into Doug Bailey of Wildgoose Records at Guildford Institute Folk Club last night and discovered that the Old Swan Band have released a new CD - last week, I think Doug said:

Swan For The Money

(Jeff Warner is over at Wildgoose at the moment, recording an album, and managed to get a one-off gig at Guildford before he goes home on Sunday. And a great gig it was. Doug had volunteered to drive Jeff to the gig and back).

The Old Swan CD isn't up on Amazon, as far as I can tell, but is available to order from the Wildgoose website.

Jolly splendid it is too, just like the last one "swan-upmanship" They are definitely one of my favourite bands.

I think it's the same lineup, but it sounds more fiddle powered than before - whether that's the way it's recorded or the tune arrangements I'm not sure.

There are a lot of really well known tunes this time.
Won't say too much now - I've got to write a review for Mardles

I really liked the early recordings re-released by Free Reed. Wasn't so keen on the lineup I heard at Whitby last year - no brass and far too much electric piano. How is the balance on this new one?

Only just found this thread via Google.

Jack, the Old Swan Band haven't been to Whitby Festival for decades so I'm guessing that the band you saw was Phoenix, run by former Old Swan melodeonist and founding member Rod Stradling.

Rod and Danny Stradling left the band 29 years ago in 1982. I know it takes some people a while to catch up on things but I received a telephone call last weekend from a guy who rang to say how much he was enjoying the new album and to ask why Rod Stradling wasn't on the album.

Colin Irwin has just reviewed the new CD in fRoots and describes us as 'reassuringly warm and familiar' and bracketing us with the Shipping Forecast - praise indeed!

Okay, I was confused. Phoenix it was.

I got hold of a copy of "Swan For The Money" from Wild Goose shortly after opening this thread and, I have to say, the CD is absolutely great. Rollicking stuff! Every time I get in the car, into the CD player it goes. And it's on iTunes on my laptop - just in case I need a quick fix of "The Sloe".

Haven't heard it yet, but would like to say that the title is pure genius.

Thanks. We didn't quite achieve the full idea which was to have a juke box on the cover - a Wurlitzer - with the title to the right so it read - Wurlitzer Swan For the Money!

I'll get my coat.
