I was having problems with Youtube, using older versions of Safari and Firefox under Mac OS 10.3.

Firefox would bring up the YouTube page, but then produce an error message. Sometimes I could get things to work by clicking on one of the "related" links, then reversing back to the first page.

Solved problems (so far, so good) by upgrading to OS 10.4, and installing the appropriate Safari and Firefox versions (I seem to remember a Flash update was also required).

I don't use FireFox, but YouTube did start working for me properly again shortly (not immediately) after I emptied my cache (without doing anything else).   OTOH, YouTube may have effected some fixes due to the growing internet complaints about these sudden, very recent weirdnesses.

Well, as I said in the related thread, I can't play videos directly on YouTube on my Mac (OS 10.6.6 with Safari) unless they are on my channel and (as of today) NOT "unlisted."   I can play anything if I've uploaded it or saved to "favorites," as long as it's "public." But even if I have the URL -- which is supposed to be the only requirement for viewing an unlisted video -- the video won't play now.   (More details in the other Tech YouTube thread.)
These weirdnesses make me think the bugs are at YouTube, not on my hardware or software.

I had to update Adobe Flash a while back, but I have Firefox, and I've had no problem with YouTube. Cleaning the cache seems to have worked for people.

Yeah, it worked again for me after restarting Firefox and clearing the cache.

I've sorted the Firefox/Mac YouTube black screen problem - or else it's coincidence - by clearing out the Firefox cache.

The other day YouTube was requiring me to log in to view anything. As I don't have an account and don't want to create one, that was kind of a problem. It went away, though. Seems like YouTube is tinkering with their functioning.

Will I have solved the problem I have been mistaking the letter l as a number one or captal I when it is in fact a lower case L.
I bet I am not the first to have fallen into that trap.

I had this problem, but solved it by clearing the cache and Flash cookies.

I read Peter's message about Jav scropts and checked on my W7 PC The scripts were blocked on Firefox so I enabled them and now Firefox runs the vids. So I suggest that you check the javascript.

I also note that on Firefox not only do the vids not play but the images on the cover don't show either.

This is strange !!

I have two laptops one with Vista and the Other with W7.

The Vista machine won't play vids using Firefox but does using Windows Explorer.

The Vista laptop plays them on Firefox & IE....!!

??

My FF portable won't play them on a remote instance of a proxy server.

Here on the public library systems they give you remote instances of XP loaded afresh each time for security and there is a lot of crippling of features for the same reason. But Opera portable reports a dialog requesting proxy passwords and so do a few sites like my mobile phone company website! Not that they offer much more than advertising. Needless to say I don't have the passwords, but I do have the evidence of the proxy server.

This is a fairly recent thing, FF2 (not the portable) on a memory stick can play Flash on the library terminals. (After it had been installed), so it is a FF issue (and Opera too).

Maybe your ISP has had something in place that only now is in conflict with FF.

I had the opposite problem. Safari wouldn't play Youtube videos whereas Firefox would. Random!

Are you using a script blocker? Java scripts need to be allowed for youtube.

Arising from another thread, it currently looks as though the Firefox browser is not playing YouTube videos at the moment - just a black rectangle and no play button. I've tested a few at random from various sites and all the same. Safari plays them all OK and Firefox plays videos on Vimeo OK. At least 2 of us here have the YouTube problem? Anyone else?
