Subject: How to wish good luck to a sailor? From: open mike Date: 23 Feb 11 - 10:38 AM what expressions does on use to wish good luck to someone who is setting of on a sailing adventure? A friend just signed on for a 4 month tour of duty on a private cargo ship in the south seas... from Hawaii to Cook islands to Line Islands. Would "full sheets and a rolling sea" be a good wish? "red sails in the sunset?" I want to make a c.d. of shanties to send to him and the rest of the crew!! |

Subject: RE: How to wish good luck to a sailor? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 23 May 19 - 04:42 AM Never noticed this post before. I have a "Pusser's Rum" mug which has a few Royal Navy traditional toasts printed on it - Monday: Our ships at sea Tuesday: Our men Wednesday: Ourselves (as no one else is likely to concern themselves with our welfare) Thursday: A bloody war and a quick promotion Friday: A willing soul and sea room Saturday: Sweethearts and Wives, may they never meet Sunday: Absent friends and those at sea But the standing toast that pleased the most was The wind that blows, the ship that goes And the lass that loves a sailor. Out of interest, it is a tin mug, white enameled with a blue rim. The toasts are on the back, the Pusser's Rum Label (including the phrase "Nelson's Blood" is on the front and inside there is a string of bunting with the words - England expects that every man will do his duty Acquired half full of Pusser's Rum at a Lancaster Maritime festival and now one of my prize possessions :-) |
