Reprise

Daniel:
But you walked off and left me. You said...

Jane:
I know what I said and I'm sorry. Why don't you ask me to come back?

Daniel:
Oh, Jane...

Be my Saturday girl
And the hours will fly in a whirl
Till our whole sweet day
Has gone flying and whirling completely away.

Be my Saturday girl
(together): And the sun is sure to rise early
And go down late
For he'll know I've a long time to wait.

Jane: Each Sunday to Friday
Will seem to take ages to go.
Daniel: Then it'll be my day
And go like a moment or so.

(together):
Be my [I'm your] Saturday girl
And it's all I'll ask of the world
Till you [I] share my [your] life
As my [your] Sunday to Saturday wife.
My [your] Sunday to Saturday wife.

Daniel:
Tomorrow's Saturday. Why don't you miss your poetry readin'. I'll tell you poetry better than you'll read in any old book.

Jane:
No, Daniel.

Daniel:
Oh, please, I've come...

Jane:
Halfway round the world. Yes, I know. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, Daniel.

Daniel: Oh no, Jane. You've got to promise me...

Be my Saturday girl
And the hours will fly in a whirl
Till our whole sweet day
Has gone flying and whirling completely away.

Be my Saturday girl
And the sun is sure to rise early
And go down late
For he'll know I've a long time to wait.

Each Sunday to Friday
Will seem to take ages to go.
Then it'll be my day
And go like a moment or so.

Be my Saturday girl
And it's all I'll ask of the world,
Till you share my life
As my Sunday to Saturday wife.

Jane:
You sweep me right off my feet
Quite completely.
No one but you would
Propose to me right in the street.

Daniel:
Street or town, or up or down
It's all the same to me.
Please you've got to tell me
What your answer is to be.

Jane:
No, Daniel, let me repeat:
Wait and see.

Daniel:
Be my Saturday girl
And it's all I'll ask of the world
Till you share my life
As my Sunday to Saturday wife.
My Sunday to Saturday wife.

That link to those "Our Century" albums is useless. You can get there, but you can't download the five tracks that are supposed to be available. They give a number of reasons...it was probably a furphy in the fist place.   I had that Lola Montez vinyl album right in my hand MANY years ago, all ready to buy it, then changed my mind and bought a Bill Haley album instead!   If you ever get the song, my email address is: ruglen@tpg.com.au   Thanks, John, Adelaide.

I've been searching for "Saturday Girl" for years.   It was sung by Johnny O'Connor and actually made the Top 40 in Adelaide. If you've found a copy, please let me know...and maybe I can "borrow" it by email? Thanks, John.

The original-cast album "Lola Montez" was reissued as a CD in 2000. There, the song title is given as SATURDAY GIRL. The album seems to be out of print.

There is a description of the play and the album here.

"The work of Peter Stannard (music), Peter Benjamin (lyrics) and Alan Burke (book)."

There is a series of 3 albums advertised here called "Our Century" volumes 1, 2, & 3. They are apparently produced in Australia. Volume 2, CD 2, track 4 is listed as (BE MY) SATURDAY GIRL performed by Johnny O'Connor (1958).

That means you will probably also find the song listed elsewhere under the title SATURDAY GIRL.

To complicate things, it seems there are several different songs called SATURDAY GIRL. Several of them can be seen at YouTube. I don't know if any of them is the song you want, but you might try listening to them to see.

If you do determine that one of them is the one you want, and you want help transcribing it, please come back and post a message here.

JR

It used to be played by Sandy Garruffi at the Old Time dance in Parra-bloody-matta RSL on a Satuday night some years ago.

Sadly, our Sandy now has dementia so it could be difficult to locate a copy

I too am trying hard to locate the music as it was a very nice song

Thanks for raising this on Mudcat...you never know you luck in a big city

I will try Charie Pippin at Mortdale ...he has the sheet music of over 100,000 songs I believe

All I have found is that "Be my Saturday girl" was written for a musical production, "Lola Montez" in Oz in 1958. Web searches have proven fruitless - does anyone have a copy of the lyrics, or know where they can be found? Anyone have a copy of an old LP stashed away in their attic?

Even you tube, usually a veritable fount of goodness, has been no help.

Cheers
JennieG
