Subject: BS: Youtube and decency
From: josepp

To all Youtube viewers:

I've posted up a couple of clips of songs I wrote. They've been up for over a year now and I had to put a filter on the comments. Here is my criteria for parsing comments:

I don't expect you to like my songs. I am not a great songwriter. I am not a great guitarist. I most definitely am not a good singer. The rate button is enabled and you can dislike my songs if you choose as most have who have bothered to rate them to a 2:1 ratio. You may remark, "You suck!" or "Worst performance on youtube!" or "This is the worst crap I have ever heard." Any such comments will be parsed. I don't care if you like my stuff or not and I don't expect you to sugarcoat anything. If you hate it, you hate it--your right.

What will not parse are comments as: "This fucking sucks!" or "You're an ugly motherfucker, dude!" or "You look like a potato nigger." You could at least explain what a potato nigger is. Insults and obscenities don't cut it. One guy wrote on one of my pages: "This motherfucking sucks!" so I deleted it. On the other page, he wrote, "This sucks too" and I parsed it. The second one was a criticism and I don't care whether he thinks it sucks or not. The other was just a dickwad wiping his ass on my page and that ain't happenin'.

Now if you say, "That was a fucking awesome song!" That will parse.

What's the difference? It boils down to intent not the words themselves. Saying my song is fucking awesome is intended as a compliment. I know of no other way to take it. Saying my song fucking sucks shit is an attempt to defecate all over my page and then leave your foul-mouthed shit mess for me to clean up. That ain't gonna happen.

The problem with youtube as I see it is not the shocking level of immaturity, cruelty and rudeness that abounds there, it's that on the vast majority of clips, it's allowed to stand and assholes then think it's okay to act that way on anybody's page.

Youtube really makes white people look bad. The reason is, anytime a black person or an Asian person or whatever posts something, you're sure to get racist comments that you know were not written by anyone but a white guy and sometime even a female but mostly males. To be a minority appearing on youtube is to run a gauntlet of white racism. These people float from clip to clip just to post racist shit and then flee--hiding under their anonymity.

But I get really angry at the person who owns that clip because they don't clean that shit up. It just stays there. Like one clip showed a 3-year-old black boy playing a classical piece on the violin with an orchestra before a large audience. One jerk commented that the kid was out of tune and I responded that he's three playing an entire piece from memory with an orchestra and thousands of people watching and he expects the kid to be perfect? Stop whining, I said. His response was along the lines of "I'm not whining you stupid fucktard! You must be some kind of nigger!"

That's often the level of intellect you have to deal with on youtube when all I did was gently rebuke the asshole from attacking a 3-year old kid for not being perfect. But why doesn't the owner of that page delete that shit?

That's other thing: the jealousy. One teen girl was playing Scottish pieces on the fiddle and there's clips of her playing since she was seven. And people were attacking her for her posture, her fingering, her way of holding the bow--as if this makes any difference how good she is. The only thing they didn't attack was the quallity of her playing because this girl was undeniably good. But, see, they know she's good and they know they can't attack that so they have to find some other way to cut her down so they can feel good about themselves and lie to themselve that they are not jealous.

One guy played Paul Simon's "Something So Right" and does a beautiful job. I mean, he really does it good. It's a song I've always wanted to learn but it's just beyond me. So I told the guy that he played a version I wish I could equal. Some other guy writes in and tells him his technique is all wrong. The more he posted, the stupider he made himself look. But he kept posting trying to invent some kind of intelligent critique that wasn't there. Someone finally told him he was clearly jealous and to just stop. "I'm not jealous at all," he writes, "He does it better than I can." But then how can he sit there and offer advice to someone on his technique who plays better than him? Does that make any sense? If you play fast and clean and some jealous jerk who's sloppy and hits wrong notes all the time tries to offer you advice on your technique, what would you say to him?

In another clip, this girl was dancing to some old 1940s stuff. She had some really good moves even though she never took a lesson. Someone then wrote in, "When you post a clip about dancing, I expect to see dancing. I have better things to do than watch you stomp around like Charlie Chaplin." What could be more obvious that this was pure jealousy?

If you post some jealous remark on my pages, I will parse them so that everyone who logs in can see what an asshole you are unles it has obscenities (that spreading your shit around thing again). You'll have to log in and remove it yourself because I won't. It's like hanging a dead chicken around the neck of a poultry-killing dog.

Imagine being jealous of a teenage girl or a three-year-old boy or even a grown man who plays and sings well. I'm envious of the talents of others but not jealous--there's a difference. I wish I had their talent and I tell them so--that's envy--but I never cut them down or attack their technique or spew some stupid racist shit--that's jealousy. "If I can't have your talent, then I'll spead my feces all over your page and leave and you don't know who I am so HAHAHAHA!!!!"

So, on my pages, I'm going to make you behave. You cannot come in posting shit and expect to see it parse. Won't happen. You can criticize as mean as you want but you can't swear or it will not parse. You'll have to get your stupid jollies off on another page that doesn't care where you wipe your ass.

...ummmm.... Why 15-16 paragraphs of warnings here? Comments like that are not likely to come from those on Mudcat. Why not just do what you will do ON the YouTube page?

Face it...there are those 'out there' who exult in being nasty and hateful. Why would warnings make any difference to them?

I don't do it on youtube because there's nowhere to post it. That's not what the descrption box is for. And I didn't just post it here. It's on a few other music sites as an attempt to raise awareness of this issue on youtube which is totally out of control and the only way it is going to brought under control is that the people who own those pages have to take charge of them and get rid of the assholes.

So my warnings are not directed at the assholes so much as at the people who post clips. If you do, watch them carefully and deal with anybody who posts shit otherwise youtube is going to become nothing more than a watering hole for every ass clown on planet earth and it's much too useful for that.

It's not only white people who make racist comments on youtube. I've
seen many racist comments from other ethnic groups.

Yes, but you can go from one clip to another that features white people in them and never run across a racist comment from a non-white person. On the other hand, it is actually difficult to go to clips that feature a person of color and not run into a racist remark made by a white person. It's actually difficult not to see it. On one clip, the camera had a close up of a guy wearing a monkey mask--a white guy with blue eyes--and there had to be 10 comments on top of one another: "Look! A NIGGER!"

I don't know if white youtube viewers understand the depth of the problem. It's out of control.

Some Catters have expressed regret that I blocked the comments section on my UTube channel; but my wife & I decided from the start that there are just too many smartarses around with nothing better to do than post negative comments out of pure [or impure!] ill-nature. This thread confirms our decision as a wise one.

Josepp -- You make a fair point: We might complain and grumble about trolls and puppets. But silence is as good as an endorsement to these sorts of people.

We each have a responsibility to make the Internet (and the "real world," too) a safe place for people and other creatures. After all, it belongs to all of us.

I love YouTube comments - I leave them all, positive & negative, initially as an antidote to the clamouring sycophany of Myspace which is (in my view) infinitely worse. Sometime the comments can prove a good deal more interesting than the video itself, like my wee clip of the annual Chester Cheese Rolling from 2007:

Where are your vids, Josepp?

I won't advertize my vids here. Maybe you'll run across them by chance.

Sometimes mean comments are ok. For example, one guy posted a clip entitled something like "Real footage of a car being lifted by a tornado" but when you click on it, you see the inside of a car as it's going down a road for about a minute and then the driver picks up the camera and points it at his face and yells, "PSYCH!" and switches it off. I was annoyed myself having watched the whole thing and was going to comment but when I started reading them, they were like, "Fucking asshole!" "Stupid faggot!" "Fucking dumbass." "Stupid shithead" and I was laughing so hard I was ready to fall out of my chair. Just pages and pages of "Eat shit, you fucking gay-ass retard!" That was ok and highly entertaining.

In another instance, some idiot was stupid enough to post a vid of himself talking about what an Asian chick magnet he is. "Don't hate because they love me. They chase me, I don't chase them. They think I'm hot. Not my fault." Anyway, you can imagine the comments he got. "You're the ugliest piece of shit that ever walked the earth." I would have thought that maybe the guy was doing it just to rile people up but he actually banned anybody that said anything mean to him. If you're going to post about what a stud you are, you better have a thick skin about it. What was this asswipe expecting? "Oh, yes, you are such a stud and SO beautiful! What a catch you are! How could the ladies possibly resist?" Again, mean comments were not only enjoyable but commendable. Some people just beg for it.

Someone actually posted a clip of a cloud that he said looked like an old lady creeping up on the moon and that it was scary. Stupid waste of time clip. Someone commented, "I saw a cloud the other day that looked like your mom blowing a Russian she-male prostitute." I laughed for about 5 minutes nonstop. As I said, some people beg for abuse

I've been posting stuff on YouTube since late 2007 - 240 in all - and I've only ever had a handful of weird/abusive comments. If people genuinely don't like what I play, then I have no problem with that - though i personally never post negative comments on other people's videos. If I don't like them, I pass on in silence.

My strategy for dealing with the few abusive ones - typically, two young teenagers giving me the finger in video and calling me an old turd (sad, eh?) - is simple:

(1) I go to the commenter's channel and block them

(2) I then remove the comment

End of story.

I also use this where a comment is actually a sly ad for some other band or for software.

The weird or odd comments - like being propositioned by young, bearded men ("Will you be my Daddy Bear?") - I just laugh at and ignore. On the other hand, I always respond to requests for hints or tips or tablature, if I can.

Josepp writes "I am not a great songwriter. I am not a great guitarist. I most definitely am not a good singer".
I would ask, "Are you even a fair songwriter, guitarist and singer?"
If not, you would be inviting negative comments.

I might be inviting negative comments which I have no problem with. They might be deserved. What isn't deserved are trashings filled with expletives, insults and racist remarks. They have nothing to do with whether my music is any good. It's done for the same reason someone drives over your lawn because you try to keep it looking nice. Just to be an asshole. The breakdown of civility and decency at youtube is occurring because people who post clips are not aggressively policing them.

In society, if you just let people do whatever the hell they want with no consequences, what do you think you society will look like in 6 months?

Negative comments can be useful, even if we don't like them. The only one I had was a typical intemperate comment which seemed as much to be about the song as my performance. However on listening to the clip again, I decided I was not satisfied with my performance of the song and I had not done it justice so I removed the clip.

Will Fly's approach strikes me as a much more sensible one than the OP's. Block abusive posters but leave more constructive negative comments alone.

I don't understand the OP's objection to revealing his You Tube ID. If you're that ashamed of your videos, then take them down and do them again.

Yeah...I've been attacked on youtube...I have a poem up about a little Maori girl who was beaten to death a few years ago. one of the verses goes after the mother for being complicit in the crime....and I was attacked for daring to blame the mother. I left it up. It adds to my ego.

In a way it goes with the territory. If you're a performer, you put your head above the parapet, and take the risk of getting it nlown off. Its a sort of tax we pay for standing out from the herd and saying, look at me. If you've found a way to avoid unfair comments - best of luck, very commendable.

I can think of pros and cons. You have to choose the path that is right for you. For a similar reason, I closed the guestbook onmy website.

////Joesepp i've never read so many cuss words or the n-word dropped in one post here on the cat before. ... Just saying.////

Are you accusing me of using nigger as my choice of how to refer to a black person? I'm quoting what has been said to people and to me. I was the guy that was called a "potato nigger" whatever that is. What does that have to do with whether my music is any good?

As for someone else's remark that the internet isn't a place for sissies, I vehemently disagree. That's EXACTLY what it is a place for. You can anonymously call me a nigger on my page but I know damn well know you won't dare say it to my face. The internet is a place for the biggest sissies on the planet.

////Yeah...I've been attacked on youtube...I have a poem up about a little Maori girl who was beaten to death a few years ago. one of the verses goes after the mother for being complicit in the crime....and I was attacked for daring to blame the mother. I left it up. It adds to my ego.////

But, see, they were commenting on something you wrote. You said something that angered them and they commented on it. The people I'm complaining about are the morons who just log in to figuratively throw their feces around for no reason than to do it. They don't care what you have to say or whether your song was any good--you're just someone they can attack and run off like little kids egging someone's house. If you allow the kids in your neighborhood to act that way with no fear of any consequences, what would your neighborhood look like in 6 months? Take a look at any ghetto for your answer. Kids can't do that without consequences and that means policing the neighborhood. It's the same thing on youtube--your page is your house in the youtube neighborhood and you have to take care of it and not let stupid little assholes ruin it. If you just let it stand, it encourages them and others to continue to do it anywhere they damn well please. Youtube is a good venue to get your stuff heard and we have to take it back from these jerks who are ruining it for everybody.

I have no idea on how one would go about teaching anyone anything on a virtual reality facility. A slanging match would hurt or punish nobody and would only sour own spirit. Why not just delete or block anything you find upsetting?

The ad at the foot of this thread is entitled 'How to defend yourself - discover what martial artists and army don't want you to know.'

Lots of luck with that.

Ok, I'm going to explain this again because you're obviously not reading all my posts on this thread--so read this one:

You can't stop people from acting like assholes on youtube. I DO block them and I filter my comments. What angers me is that most people do not police their pages. Some of the worst crap I've ever read is allowed to stand and it encourages these people to continue to act this way. What I am saying is that they cannot act that way o my threads and I want other posters to follow suit. POLICE YOUR THREADS and encourage other posters to police theirs.

There's no reason a 12-year-old girl posting herself singing a song should be called a "stupid little cunt" by someone no matter what the reason is but there's even less reason that this remark should be allowed to stay up. You can't stop this reject from making such a comment but the poster of the clip can remove and block the guy who said it.

When these people find fewer and fewer threads to post their shit on, they will be forced to reconsider their position. As it stands, youtube is a haven for anonymous cowards to post crap but who don't have the sand to post themselves singing or performing their own songs.

After a few forays into the comments on YouTube, and also into places like articles on hot-button issues in the local newspaper, I figure the remarks area is a throw-away to keep the low-lifes happy. They have nothing better that to be nasty in an anonymous fashion. Why let them waste your time? Eliminate the space for remarks altogether, that's what I would do.

When I first clicked on this I thought it might be looking at all of the sleazy stuff posted on YouTube. (Actually, YouTube is mild compared to another of the other "You" sites out there. I heard a remark about "YouPorn" the other day. Yup. There is such a place. And it's exactly like you'd expect it to be. So regarding this thread, there is decency and there is decency. . .)

Hmm. I've watched things on YouTube quite a bit, and although I knew there were comments that people put on, I've never really paid any attention to them. I look for songs, mostly, and I've found a fair number that I've been looking for. It's also introduced me to a number of singers that I'd never heard and/or seen before. Some were a very pleasant surprise and I've looked them up elsewhere. Others, well, nice they were getting out there, but not my cup of tea.

But I've never posted comments, nor have I paid any attention to others' comments.

I just did some spot checks this evening, and so far, I haven't found anything particularly negative. Or "indecent."

Undoubtedly it's there, because that, unfortunately, is one of the road hazards of the internet. If you're going to put your work out there for people to comment on, people are liable to comment. Negatively or positively. And unfortunately there are some sorry folks who can't seem to resist scribbling dirty words on walls if they can do it anonymously. Paucity of intellect and general juvenile snottiness. But if you want to drive on that road, you just have to expect that now and then, someone might splash a little mud on you.

Or as someone once aptly put it, "If you can't stand the heat, don't sit on the barbeque!"

I suppose its as well to check that other people are encountering the same problem. And it IS a problem. Like I say, I closed down my guestbook webpage - because some little sods in a school in New England were using the school computer to send me forty or fifty messages at a time.

I e-mailed the school and it stopped for a time. Although they never wrote back to me. But then it started again, so i just gave up.

I dunno what the answer is. its not a very satisfactory situation though.

"You have the choice whether or not to read my threads."

Wrong! You don't OWN any thread here. You may START some threads, but not only does nobody CARE who starts them it's not normally POSSIBLE TO KNOW WHO started them, without opening them.

Now you may mean "You have the choice whether or not to read my POSTS", but that makes no sense, except to excessively poor and slow readers. For normal readers who have learned to scan whole sentences and paragraphs at a time, we have already read your filth before it can be unread.

You are the one who started this thread self-righteously complaining about a lack of manners by others, use of foul language by others, and a lack of caring about others by others in public, then demand the 'right' to spray foul language YOURSELF, thus displaying how little you care about others yourself in public.

There's only one word on the Internet for that - TROLL.

There are lots of other words (some of them very rude and nasty) used in society though.

And you REFUSE to let us see YOUR WORK, which you boast about putting up, then complain about the reception you get, even though you appear to display some humility by claiming that you are not very good.

Those internationally who were part of the Paltalk rooms a while ago know my talent and skill level - I would be better if I practiced more... I would like to start up the Skype music sessions, but we are currently too few to get it started. See the thread.

There is no outward answer, unless you become supreme world dictator, a la Mussolini or Stalin, only on a bigger scale. Then you can have your secret police track down all these immature internet miscreants and kill them, torture them, pull out their fingernails, and make them PAY BIGTIME for having annoyed you! ;-)

There is, however, an inward answer....

I too am annoyed by the crude, vulgar and irredeemably stupid stuff that a lot of people post in their Youtube comments. I sometimes let it annoy me for a second or two. I then choose to forget about it, move on, and instead focus on something that I thoroughly enjoy...thus excercising the one legitimate power I have in this life: controlling myself and my own inner state of consciousness.

Facebook will soon share users' phone numbers and addresses with 3rd parties

By Brett Michael Dykes

It's been a while since we've had an uproar over Facebook's handling of its users personal information, so we suppose the time is ripe.

So cue the online outrage: Facebook announced today in a letter to Congress that the social-media platform is moving forward with plans to give third parties access to user information, such as phone numbers and home addresses.

Ok - so this is a thread entitled "youtube and decency"

riight - so the OP is likely to be posting something about youtube ...

... and looking at how decency gets on on youtube ...

... without looking, I have a pretty goood idea that its not going to be singing Youtubes praises, because in my experience, a lot of what goes on on youtube is pretty indecent .. whether it be peoples videos or their comments.

So Before I opened this thread, I huesssed it would contain some example of indecency on youtube, and an opinion or a sentiment about it.

And thats what I found ... a reaction to some of the outrageous stuff that is written in the comments on youtube.

The reason I say all this, is that it seems, judging by peoples reactions to Josepp, that they were surprised to read that he had experience of youtube indecency, and surprised that he expressed his honest reaction to it.

The only thing I can't work ot is - what were you all expecting?

You're like a bunch of grumpy grown ups telling some kkid to stop bugging you with his questions ....

But what you miss is that Josepp is making some really interesting, current and challenging points.

1. Levels of Racism are dangerously high.

Youtube evidences this strongly.

On the way, he refers to some interesting ideas like the following ... there is a current view, that if you wish to refer to the word nigger, you should do so honestly and say it.

The rationale behind this is that if I say "the N word" to you, then I put the word "nigger" into your mind, and make it your responsibility, whilst avoiding responsibility for referring to it.

If I choose to refer to it, it is a choice that I should take full responsibility for.

Now, I don't know whether I agree with this or not, as I am sure that there are contexts where this 'rule' is inappropriate - for example when talking to an elderly black man ...

... but it is an interesting development in humanities progress away from the days of institutionalized dehumaniization.

The only problem I have with Josepps OP is that it doesn't provide a link to his hopeful warblings - I for one would like to listen and judge for myself.

Lox...levels of racism have always been dangerously high. I mean always...since the beginning of recorded history if not before.

The Internet simply allows people to anonymously express all the antisocial crap they wouldn't have dared to express directly to people face-to-face before or in print with their name on it before, that's all. That's why you see so much of it on Youtube and elsewhere on the Net. It isn't because there's more of it now than there used to be, it's because it's now safe for the most immature lunkheads among us to flaunt their gross immaturity for all to see, and so they do. They do not have to fear any consequences.

Similarly, it's safe for people now to access all the pornography they could possibly want to via the Internet, and they do. They can do it in complete anonymity, at no expense, with no consequences, so they do it, of course.

Whether this is bad or good remains to be seen. On the one hand, it gives frustrated people an outlet for whatever's bothering them. On the other hand, it may weaken them and damage their general character in various ways, as well as causing a lot of anger to other people.

I'm not sure how it balances out...on the positive or the negative side...but I'll say this: dealing with it and overcoming its negative possibilities can be a very useful exercise in personal growth. That is, if you can learn how to avoid getting hijacked and drawn into all the negativity, and learn how to control your own formerly out-of-control reactions to it....then you will have grown as a person.

I think that could be seen as an opportunity rather than a threat.

John P,

When you say "Experience, learn, move on."

Do you mean observe, note in diary and ignore?

In my book "learn" means "face up to"

So if you criticize your country because it isn't as good a place as it could be does that mean you shouldn't support it? It is because I love my country that I criticize it endlessly. It's the same with anything that you love--when it isn't as good as it could easily be, you offer a critique because you know it can be better sna should be better. I love visiting youtube but it has problems because a handful of morons have an inordinate amount of influence--one guy can turn a civil, intelligent thread into a flame-war disaster--then I criticize it.

Youtube is extremely useful, a vast depository of music and other forms of art. A great place to get exposure for your music or your ideas. But it has problems--problems that can be fixed if the people there would just fix them.

Agreed, josepp. Now, do you feel that you or I can do anything about it? If so, what?

It looks to me like the people who own and manage Youtube (I presume someone does...) don't want to do anything about it. Or perhaps they don't know how to do anything about it without hiring a lot of staff as moderators...and that would cost them money.

I used to get pissed off at all the stupid comments on Youtube, but eventually I realized that my getting pissed off was simply putting me in a bad mood and screwing up part of my day...but not in any way affecting the people who were pissing me off.

So I decided to just ignore them and save myself the trouble of getting in a lousy mood over stuff I can't change (meaning: I can't change other people)

I do feel that I have a responsibility to help make the world a kinder place. And I do that by trying to act decently and kindly myself. That's where my responsibility kicks in, and that's the point where I can actually really DO something.

I cannot do something about immature kids who want to post nasty comments on Youtube.

Your impplication seems to be - if you can't do anything about it, stop moaning.

In fact, raising the issue IS doing SOMETHING.

The more people who are aware of the issue and who have a view on it, the more it becomes a debate.

Slow incremental, but inevitable.

Finding a buddhist way to accept it and get over it is not the only solution and could be viewed as a selfish ssolution - as if to say "as long as I don't feel troubled by the problem then thats what is important. ..."

I think You Tube is a great index to behavior and sociology. It shows what people think that is important to exhibit. Decency is by definition an ambiguous word, an index into someone's morality, an appeal to ethics or social responsibility, a way to divide what someone thinks is "good" or "bad", or a weapon to use to demonize an idea or person that you don't agree with.

For the most part, YouTube seems quite productive and creative, informative and
revealing, exhibiting rare talents and unusual performances, and is an antidote to the
rubber-stamped performances that are offered by media as entertainment.

I love YouTube.

I agree with Stringsinger. YouTube, to me, is a marvel, a door that almost inexplicably opens to vast expanses. When I want to re-hear something from years back, there it is. Most often not visual but audio is what I'm looking for, most of the time.

And I use it for contemporaneous things too. I would hate to be without it.

As for the comments- rude or otherwise - I rarely open them. If I found someting disturbing or unhelpful I would simply close it or go on to something else.

There is, indeed, a limit at which forbearance ceases to be a virtue, josepp. With that in mind, I suggest that you find a means to track down the moronic posters on Youtube who have upset you and many others, hunt them down in their filthy lairs, and dispose of them one by one in a most hideous manner. In doing so, you will help to clean up Youtube and make a name for yourself as well. You may even get on the 6 O'clock News if it all goes well.

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: BS: Youtube and decency
From: Little Hawk
Date: 05 Mar 11 - 10:57 PM

Smokey, I have endured the like myself. That is to say, I have been irritated by ignorant people who post their insults and their moronic comments below Youtube videos.

Briefly.

I was tempted to make sarcastic and witty comments at those poster's expense on a few of those Youtube videos...and I had some fun doing so. You can tell immediately by the response you will sometimes get from those lads that they are entirely unaccustomed to subtle humour, but they do usually get the drift eventually that they are being made sport of and not taken seriously in the least. That really bothers them. ;-) They hurl more insults, to which I reply in a completely tongue in cheek manner, using BIG words to further confuse them, and I get a few laughs out of it. Therefore I have occasionally amused myself at the expense of various obscene and very ignorant lunkheads who post nasty stuff on Youtube. It was quite satisfying! ;-)

Other than that, however, how much of my time do I really want to devote toward getting upset over such a phenomenon? Not much. It would get in the way of doing much more enjoyable stuff...like posting on this thread, for example, or reading a good book, playing my guitar, doing my daily work, etc...

And my getting upset over a hundred thousand or more ignorant Internet yahoos will not in any way prevent them from continuing to be ignorant Internet Yahoos, and I know it.

Therefore I give it very little of my time, except when it momentarily amuses me to do so...which happens occasionally when I'm looking at stuff on Youtube.

We can rave all we want on Mudcat Cafe about indecency on Youtube....it won't change the way Youtube is managed...but if anyone here seriously thinks that he can persuade the owners of Google to alter Youtube in such a way as to prevent such indecency from occurring in future, then I guess he should get busy and contact them.

So get right on it, you who will not practice forbearance in the face of Internet indecency. ;-) Do not delay! Contact the owners of Google RIGHT NOW and give them an earful. Raise bloody hell about it. Go ballistic. And I wish you luck with that.

Back in the 70s and 80s, I used to answer phones on PBS pledge nights. We used to get all kinds of creeps, calling up to say all kinds of foul things. We had no way, in those days, of identifying them, so they could say really clever things like, "How many hairs have you got on your pussy?" anonymously.

If there was a black person making the pledge pitch, we would always get some racist comments along with the obscenities.

Give some people an opportunity to comment anonymously, they'll say all kinds of crude, disgusting things.

As far as I can gather, the worst Josepp has had himself on there is an accusation of being Irish, which I personally wouldn't consider to be an insult, although admittedly the expression used could well be insulting to the Irish, or intended to be. However, when asked if he was Irish, he replied "hell, no".

I had an English profession (Shakespeare class) in college who, when questioned about whether or not Shakespeare actually existed, commented that there is a substantial number of people with a wild hair up their butts (Oh, shock! Tsk, I go out for a few hours and come back to find Shakespeare never existed.. For the record, someone of that name certainly existed at the appropriate time but there are varying theories about who actually wrote the material attributed to that name, some dafter than others. A friend of mine wrote a book on the subject based on years of painstaking research - diplomacy and uncertainty precludes me from quantifying its daftness. Shakespeare's work exists though, there in all its glory for idiots to misunderstand. To be fair, there is much of Bob Dylan's work which I probably don't understand, but I wouldn't dream of denying his existence as an excuse, whether or not he really wrote it.

Perhaps they all, including Robin Hood, who has a pub named after him, both existed and yet did not exist simultaneously.

Goes without saying, Ebbie, or it would have, had you not said it. Or did you?

I lied in bed once. "Trust me", I said, "It'll cure your rickets".

For centuries people in the English-speaking world would lie in bed, not lay in bed. Only in past tense would it be said "I lay in bed for the whole day." In present tense it would be said, "I intend to lie in bed for at least 7 hours and get a good rest."

Then along came the 60s and more and more people started "laying" in bed for some reason (present tense). I blame this lamentable change in grammar on popular TV shows like the Beverley Hillbillies, Green Acres, and Bonanza. It was part of the great yokelizing of America. The end result of such a process is people who go to Monster Truck rallies, watch NASCAR, say "nookular", and elect George Bush. ;-D

You're absolutely correct, LH, but I now have a mental picture of beds full of eggs. Your use of the word 'yokelizing' didn't help..

I have heard even teachers confuse 'lay' and 'lie'. I shouldn't say "confuse", actually, because it didn't even occur to them that they were wrong.

One time I thought I was wrong - but I was wrong.

I lied in bed once. I felt sort of guilty about that.

She was a really nice girl, though. . . .

(Man, was she nice!!)

Thanks Hawk, though now it sounds like the latest dance craze.. Shouldn't it be 'yokelization'? I think we have a duty here to promote correct English, like what she is spoke proper.

"Yokelization" does sound better. Okay, yokelization it is, then. I'm now thinking that Al Capp may have started the whole thing off with Li'l Abner Yokum.

Nah - we invented yokels over here in the early middle ages. They chewed grass and said "oh arr" a lot. Of course, the actual process of yokelization as we now know it was developed later so you may be partly right, I have to grudgingly admit.

Of course, there would be those who would spell it with an 's' in preference to a 'z', but over here that largely depends on which university one attended. I've been to quite a few of them, but I was playing keyboards and smashed out of my brains, so I didn't learn very much. I believe Oxford prefers 'z's.

josepp, all I can tell you is that on all the videos I post on my YouTube Channel (WildeNotesMusic) - whether they are my own or videos of other people -- I use my settings to "Allow comments with approval" only.    That allows me to ignore the really rude, juvenile, unhelpful comments.    I don't censor them based on whether they like the video or not, but on whether the comment is clear, understandable, and basically civil.
So if someone wants to say, "Your singing is very pitchy," or "I hate your voice and your guitar work is very amateurish," I'll allow that. But if they want to post something like "You suck, bitch!" or "Boy, you look fat!" or the like, I won't "approve" the comment.

Millions of people view YouTubes and among them there are going to be those who are immature, mentally unstable, drunk, high on drugs, pissed off about other things & needing a scapegoat, or some combination thereof.   Don't let those folks spoil the good things about YouTube.    Some people "deserve a good lettin' alone" and that's the best way to deal with them.

Genie

I resent that. I'm rarely drunk at all.
