I believe this September 2011 marks the 20th year that we've been without,IMHO, one of the best traditional singers ever.
Speaking to friends at my local folk club we agreed that it would be great to organise a Peter Bellamy evening, perhaps in September, to salute him.
I just wondered if anyone else had any thoughts or plans on this or ideas to share.

Sidmouth FolkWeek is staging a new production of The Transports, hopefully in conjunction with the SouthBank Centre. We are still wrangling with the details, but we are hoping for a premiere at Sidmouth followed by a short tour in October. Regardless of whether the autumn dates come together, the Sidmouth show is definite (Thursday 4 August). We are also planning screenings of rare material, and an exhibition of some of Peter's own memorabilia - he was a keen archivist. In fact, I've been at Jenny Bellamy's house this weekend starting to sort through and select materials for the screenings and exhibition. I hope we can do him justice.

That's great news Joan. I never saw Peter perform but am a big fan of his work; The Transports was a huge undertaking and certainly deserves a new production - any idea who will sing yet?. Good luck with that- it'll be on my list of shows to see. I was pleased to see that there is now some footage of him on youtube thanks to a Mudcat member - it was my first view of him performing live. Many thanx for that.

The casting is still being firmed up, but those who have said yes so far: Jon Boden, Damien Barber, Martin Carthy, Eliza Carthy, Jim Moray, Jim Causley, Jackie Oates, Gavin Davenport, The Young'Uns, with Paul Sartin and Sam Sweeney doing the musical direction.

Looks like a top class line-up to me!

The Young'Uns are a brilliant acappella trio and Gavin Davenport is also a favourite (Crucible is the band, I think).
It looks like the Milkmaid Club in Suffolk UK will be holding a Bellamy event on Friday 30th September - local people singing and playing songs recorded by Peter. One for your diary!

Joan--can you give me any idea where to find a score for The Transports or any sheet music?

I'm in western Canada and no one here has seen The Transports. Most people have never heard of it.

Any help appreciated!

Just to confirm post from Speedwell above, The Milkmaid Folk Club in Bury St Edmunds is putting on a 'Bellamy' evening in September, I'm hoping to do a song or two.

I'll get the organiser of the event to come on here and post more details.

John
