Subject: Moira Furnace Folk Festival 2011
From: OlgaJ
Date: 28 Feb 11 - 05:14 AM

Planning and ticket sales are well under way for this year's festival which will run from 19th - 21st August. See website for details of lineup etc. There will be two ceilidhs, concerts in the marquee and on the Hermitage FM stage (Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday afternoon), song sessions, pub sessions, workshops, dance sides, a story walk, lots of activities for children, and probably lots of things I have forgotten. Early bird tickets are available until 31st May at last year's prices which is great value for money so don't miss out by leaving it too late. Day tickets are available and camping can be booked for weekend ticket holders.

Moira Furnace Folk Festival

In addition to the fundraising events listed on the website 'What's the Point?'(and possibly invited guests) will be playing for a St Patrick's celebration at the New Inn at Pegg's Green, Coleorton, Leics. at lunchtime on Sunday 20th March in aid of the festival, so if you are in the area please feel free to come along and buy a great pint of Guinness (or whatever takes your fancy)and drop your loose change into the collecting boxes. This will be an unamplified gig as the pub is very small and we are going to be shoehorned into one corner of the bar. This won't be an open session as the monthly Monday night session will be running as usual on the preceding Monday (14th March).

Olga

pout sniffle... I don't think we can make it this year. Pity because this is a wonderful little festival. So much packed into a small space and short time. Excellent quality artists too.

Man... I am getting depressed thinking about not being able to attend.

Thanks for posting this Olga!

As far as I know there'll be a MudGather at Moira in a NEW Venue, details nearer the time. Meanwhile, start collecting/planning your chocolate entries *grin* My vote is for Million Dollar Shortbread, it was wonderful last year!!

So sorry you won't be joining us Tam, you will be missed.

Just received the fliers for 'The Folk Thing' at Ashby Folville in April. You can buy tickets for BOTH the Folk Thing and Moira Furnace Folk Festival for less than half the price of many other festivals and they are both small and friendly festivals and far enough apart in the calendar not to interfere with each other.

Workshops planned at the moment include harmony singing(2), accompanied singing, music hall song swap, beginners melodeon, guitar to accompany singing, song writing (2),kazoo making(aimed at children) and story telling techniques. We have also got a tai chi session first thing in the morning (Saturday and Sunday)to prepare you for the day, and a story walk around the woodland on Saturday morning, so there is plenty to do before the music starts!

Perhaps someone can help us out. We are looking for a couple more dance sides for MFFF so that we can provide a full and varied programme. If you dance with a side that is available for the weekend 19th - 21st August and would like to dance at this pleasant little festival please let me know your contact details (PM if you prefer)and I will pass them on. Any style of dance would be appreciated.

Thanks

Don't forget if you are in the North West Leicestershire area tomorrow lunchtime our band is doing a belated St Patrick's celebration at the New Inn, Pegg's Green in aid of festival funds. Come and join in with some well known chorus songs (popular in Ireland if not actually Irish), listen to some moving Irish ballads and tap your feet to some lively jigs and reels. All this in addition to a great pint of Guinness and a friendly atmosphere.

There was talk of having a quiet family area, then someone asked for a dog free area, so it might be difficult to accommodate everyone as some people with dogs will want a quiet pitch (not all dogs are noisy). If we set up a quiet area I would assume anyone on the rest of the site is happy with a bit of late noise but I think we need to respect everyone on site and quieten down if we are asked. I will bring this up at the next meeting, if it is possible we will set up different areas but it might turn out to be a logistical nightmare.

As discussed at the last meeting there will be a quiet area for people who specifically ask for 'no noise/no noisy dogs' camping but we would rather you didn't make a lot of noise into the early hours on the main camping field either as the rest of us do need some sleep (especially if we've got to get up early to make sure everything is running smoothly next day!). We won't be imposing rules or asking for complete silence as we too like a drink or two after all the organised entertainment is over, especially if we have been playing, but we would appreciate a little bit of consideration for everyone else on site as we (the committee) will have to deal with any complaints received about excessive noise.

Hope that doesn't sound too much like a lecture, its common sense really!

Don't forget you've only got 'til the end of the month to get your tickets at last year's prices.

Will be experimenting with a different flavour for the shortbread this year.

If anyone coming to the Festival would like to run a pub session can you PM me with your real name and whether you would prefer evening or afternoon sessions and the type of session you would like to run (song/music/mixed)This will give us the opportunity to make sure everyone is catered for most of the time. We appreciate that once a session is under way it tends to look after itself but it is nice to have someone there to steer it! At the moment we only have three sessions with possible leaders (Friday at the Railway, Saturday evening at the Woodman and Sunday lunchtime at the Woodman - all mixed sessions)so there are plenty of spaces available.

Many thanks

Olga

I'll ask the question at our next meeting but the people who have volunteered so far are already performing or stewarding over the weekend and therefore getting concessions already. Its difficult to know where to draw the line as far as free tickets/camping is concerned as obviously we still have to pay for the camping pitches from our income and as a committee we would really like to be able to keep the cost down next year. However, I can appreciate that volunteers should be rewarded in some way so I will ask the question and see what we can come up with. I'm in the process of moving from Derby to York at the moment so communications with the organizers might not be as frequent as they have been but I will post something on this in the next few weeks when I have spoken to them.

Last post seems to have got lost somewhere.

JohnJ: I have replied to your PM but let me know if that has got lost too.

Wheatman: There is a good drinking water supply on site but you might like to bring a bottle or two for initial use as last year there was a delay in getting the pipe run and people were arriving before it was ready. It should be OK this year as we are planning to run the pipe on the Thursday. No need to load yourself down with bottled water.

Festival t-shirts and sweatshirts are now available to order from the MFFF website. Orders received before 14th August are guaranteed to be delivered in time to pick up at the Festival. Various colours and sizes, some with dates, some with artists names, and some with just the logo so there is plenty to choose from.

We have got session leaders for the evenings in both pubs and Sunday lunchtime in the Woodman so it looks like the other afternoon sessions will be a 'do-it-yourself' arrangement. If you feel like having a play or a song just turn up and hopefully other people will join you.

Guilty as charged. Not sure if I will be making any this year as I've only got a couple of days between coming back from holiday and moving house during the week leading up to the festival. The shortbread keeps for weeks so I might do a batch before I go away. I'm pretty sure the Mudgather is going to be in the Railway as there is a big gap in the loft programme on Saturday afternoon but I will check with Lynne.

Hi guys, I'm back on the Cat!

Moira was brilliant..again. The weather was great, the artists were great and, of course, the people were great.

The storywalk was wonderful, one of the high spots, and Cats has some really good ideas for next year.

Hils had thought there would only be a handful of people at the Mudgather, but the room was packed...at least 35 people there I think. Some wonderful singing and some yummy chocolate. Another high spot.

Love Lynne

Echoing my personal thanks to all at Moira for another brilliant weekend, it was without doubt the best of the year's fests so far.
Fab singing, fab performances from all the stage acts, a fab Mudgather, really good organisation and a great atmosphere, genuinely appreciative and supportive.
Dates in diary for next year already!
Cheers!

Sorry I missed the Gather but I had a good excuse, sounds like it was a good one. The festival was great again this year and we even got some sunshine at times. Definitely a 'must do' weekend for me from now onwards, just need to watch out for the tickets going early as the numbers are limited to the size of the main stage tent capacity and it was a sell-out this year. Hope everyone got home safely, was great to see you all.

Chris

I had a great time and what a location. Sorry about the croaky voice I hope it's not permanent. At least Christine did some singing as well, first time in years. I don't know if we will make it next year but it is on the short list and maybe there will be an invasion from south lincs/ north cambs if we do come. Well done to them oo duz (I speak fen as well as pitmatic) Gan Canny Brian

What a Fabulous weekend, well done to all the Committee & Volunteers who put so much effort into making Moira such a success!!

As to the MudGather, yes, I was very surprised at seeing so many Catters come along to support it. I had thought that most people would be at the Concerts, very glad so many could come & join the fun. What an excellent venue that upstairs room of the Railway is! And the landlady, Diane, was absolutely wonderful and very accommodating. I understand she's very keen on sessions in the bar and the locals join in too!

Anyway, here's the Register:

Sounds like a great festival. I think Rob and I might choose to come next year! As it turns out, it's probably just as well we didn't come this year, as I had a stinking cold since last Wednesday which has turned into bronchitis and I'm on antibiotics now. I don't seem to have adjusted to the UK bugs yet :(

Seaking

It might have been me, what were we talking about? I was up there late afternoon just before we left but there were lots of people about and I can't actually remember who I talked to. I'm short and dumpy and was probably wearing a striped hat.

Nice to know I was 'spotted', sorry not to get over to the gather as we were on main stage that afternoon, but I hear a good time was had by all.

Moira Furnace just keeps getting better and better, well done to all involved on the committee and in any way with organisation, stewarding etc. Special thanks from me to John King for the loan of his spare gas bottle!

I know I speak for all the Bounty Hounds in saying that we all had a fantastic weekend, and two great gigs.

Personal highlights, Jez Lowe on Friday evening, and a super set from Chris King (seaking) on Sunday.

Hounds won't be back next year as a band, we've done two and of course they want to ring the changes, (although 2013 was mentioned a couple of times!) might just have to book a ticket myself if the band is not busy elsewhere.

Thanks for having us from all the Hounds, keep up the good work!

John
