DANIEL IN THE LION'S DEN
(Songwriter unknown)

Where is Daniel, my youngest son?
Gone to fetch the water from the well.
Why is he taking so long?
Who will go find him 'fore the morning comes?

Be smart, be smart, now, Daniel dear.
Vicious beasts are lurking in the shadows.
Let God hold your little hand,
To lead you through the perils of the darkness.

Then bravely Catherine, she did go,
To find her young brother in the forest.
Taking mother's warmest coat,
____ for the journey.

What bright star did guide her way?
Did the branches beg to let the light down?
As through the blackness of the night,
She happened on the mound of the lion's den.

Poor ol' Daniel in the lion's den,
Gone to fetch the water from the well.
What is taking him so long?
Who will go find him 'fore the morning comes?

Then "Daniel, Daniel!" she did cry,
To hear the dying echo in the chasm,
On the rocks his blood still warm,
His empty ring flickering in the moonlight.

Stealing soft into the lion's den
With the smell of death and blood all thick around her,
She clutched the ring to her breast,
Cherishing the dying warmth of Daniel.

Poor ol' Daniel in the lion's den,
Gone to fetch the water from the well.
What is taking him so long?
Who will go find him 'fore the morning comes?

Take flight, take flight, Catherine dear.
For eyes that know not pity circle round you.
From the closing what new flight
Return the cooling ring unto your mother.

Behold, his ring, mother dear.
Touch the dying warmth of your beloved.
Lions took his flesh from us,
But God will have his soul in the morning.

Poor ol' Daniel in the lion's den,
Gone to fetch the water from the well.
He with no sin to his name,
Without ____ of my brother.

As of 2-27-11 lyrics could not be found online. I bought the song in iTunes and wrote out the lyrics. There are a couple of gaps that need to be addressed.

Story of Daniel puzzles me, as it does not match up w/bible story. Also wonder how old this Daniel is. Old enough to be sent to the well to get water, but line, "hold his little hand", makes him sound very small. Decided about 5-7 until I found out he had a ring. Five year olds don't wear rings. Very confusing.

Haunting and beautiful. Can't get it out of my head.

Isn't Daniel the brother who left the group? Do they have a sister? Is the Lion's Den the music industry faced by a new solo artist?

Having just sampled a number of their MP3s, I hear a lot of stinkin' thinkin' (if you know what I mean). Maybe that's why/how Daniel left.

OK, Dan was a bandmate, not a brother. But on his own page his self-description is disturbing, and the first song in his queue is Death is a Warm Bath. I'd worry, too. Tho the song DANIEL reads like a suicide story, he appears to be still on the planet.

Thanks for all the input. Bottom line - Different Daniel.

Still, would make more sense if former band member, Daniel Lefkowitz, had OD'd on drugs or met some similar tragic end. That would explain the imagery of being killed 'in the lion's den', the 'smell of death and blood', vicious beasts lurking in the shadows, etc. But apparently Dan is alive and well, living in a yurt somewhere, (which could explain 'gone to fetch water from the well' line).

Well, reaching into someone else's depression (any Daniel) can be like drowning in a well, even if one does climb back out again. Most of LA's lyrics seem to NOT include a path out of the well-- they are very young. :~) I'm looking forward to re-writing a number of them if we do them as offertories. The sound/mindset seems to be Tom Waits plus Joni Mitchell plus Kenny Vaughan-- a wackily cool mix.

Glad you came back to post-- thought I'd been talkin' to myself there for awhile.

Daniel was a young Irish lad who went off to the local pub for a pint. While returning home he ran into British soldiers who began abusing the outnumbered Daniel. When Daniel fought back, things quickly escalated and Daniel was mercilessly beaten.

About this time his sister Catherine, who had secreted from her parents home, came upon the scene. There she called out to the dying Daniel. In desperation Catherine ran to his side and grabbed his ring, which had come free during the beating. While she was still able Catherine fled for home and shared the sad news with her parents.

There are references to the self-exiled, depressed, solitary Daniel in other TLA songs. Maybe I'll come back and note some. But if you listen to the albums you'll catch the references. Songs are about emotional experience which sink in and take on multiple meanings in the song-writer's consciousness. And the listener's. The feelings glide around, land on other experiences, the meanings shift, as in the flight of birds, as in mythical stories.

This is also the Biblical Daniel story buy filtered by a consciousness of the dethronement of the Bible as God's truth, as expressed in Oh My God Charlie Darwin. there is no need to adhere to the Bible as truth or conform to how its stories are told. You can make up your wn version once you accept that Nature, through evolution, created us, not God. But an evocation of the Bible, especially when not literal, is sprirually moving and haunting.

Yes. One of the band members left the group to go live in a yurt. Group was really taking off so it was a puzzle. It fits. It hits on features of the Bible story, but this is a different Daniels story.
