Ballydehob Jazz Festival 2011

29th April to 2nd May

Ballydehob Jazz Festival 2011 will take place from 29th April to 2nd May this year. We’re currently updating the programme and in the meantime we’re proud to announce the following headline acts:

SATURDAY APRIL 30, 8.30pm (Community Hall)

â€쳌Swinging like hell one minute, brutally expressive and heartbreakingly tender the next…utterly brilliant!â€쳌
Time Out Magazine

â€쳌World Classâ€쳌 The Guardian

â€쳌One spine-tingling song after anotherâ€쳌 Jazzwise Magazine

Liane has won multiple awards in recent years including:
        - BBC Double Jazz Triumph for Best Vocalist and Best Jazz Artist
- Best Female Jazz Vocalist Award â€" Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, London
- “Slow Downâ€쳌 album â€" Sunday Times nominated it one of the top 5 Jazz Albums of the year.

Standout performances at Glastonbury Festival (Live Broadcast on BBC Radio 3) and Lincoln Center and Rochester Jazz Festival, NY.

Accompanied by Steve Pearce on bass and Mark Fletcher on drums, this promises to be a very special night for Ballydehob Jazz Festival.

FRIDAY APRIL 29, 8.00pm (Community Hall)
ANDREAS VARADY TRIO includes “In Conversation……â€쳌 (a unique interview with Andreas and Bandi)

“Sounds like teen spirit……â€쳌 Irish Independent

Irish Times Top 50 Musical Moments of 2010:
“Andreas Varady, like Django Reinhardt and Ferenc Snétberger, is a brilliant jazz guitarist of European gypsy stock and, at 13, may yet be the best of them all. A debut CD, “Questionsâ€쳌, is out, and a stunning appearance in Dublin….. proved the hype to be justified.â€쳌 Ray Comisky

“…confidence, skill, obvious enjoyment and a genuine connection to the music.â€쳌 “Questions is a delight: fun, accessible, unpretentious and positive. ……accomplished players and represent an emerging Irish jazz scene of tremendous potential.â€쳌
All About Jazz (USA)

“The main talking point was a young guitarist….. This wunderkind Andreas Varady plays much more in the vein of Wes or George Benson and, on top of that, is highly musical and responsive.â€쳌
Jazzwise Magazine, UK

“No repetitive pentatonic noodling or SRV-style posturing for this kid. I think it would be safe to say that we haven’t seen talent of this calibre at this age since 1978, when a 12-year old Bireli Lagrene emerged on the scene with a fully-formed technique in the Django Reinhardt tradition.â€쳌
The Guitar Column
- “Questionsâ€쳌, debut cd released with two self-penned songs alongside compositions by Miles   Davis, Coltraine, Reinhardt
- RTE and BBC Radio/TV appearances
- Guesting with guitar heroes Frank Vingola and Tommy Emmanuel
- Featured guest on Martin Taylor’s “Spirit of Djangoâ€쳌 show at Edinburgh Jazz Festival
- Attending the famous Skidmore College of Music and performiing in New York
- Tokai Guitars unveiled a limited edition ‘Andreas Varady’ signature model

2011 brings him into an ever widening spotlight performing at London’s Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club with festivals and tours to follow. You really will be saying “I saw him when……â€쳌

Accompanied by Bandi Varady, Andreas’ teacher and father, on guitar and David Hodek (13 year old Slovakian sensation) on drums.

Tickets €8 / €5 (under 18s) (advance purchase tickets collected on the door)
or Festival Ticket €30 (Liane Carroll Trio, Andreas Varady Trio, Festival Clubs)
Doors Open 7.30pm
