Subject: RE: Fisherman's Friends Film... From: gnomad Date: 02 Mar 11 - 03:53 AM Also a nautical verb, a ship which has foundered is one which has sunk. Chambers dictionary advises it derives from the French verb fondrer; to plunge to the bottom. I know nothing relevant to Surreysinger's query. |
Subject: RE: Fisherman's Friends Film... From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 02 Mar 11 - 07:13 PM Often you see foundered incorrectly spelled and pronounced floundered. The misuse is so common that it is replacing the proper word. So it goes with the Kings English, another term often incorrectly called the Queen's English. ;) |
