It is a Russian folk tune. Read all about it in Wikipedia. Melodrama? Not really, but in Soviet culture all folklore was loaded with the pathos of victory in class struggle.

The Tetris figures may be seen as symbolizing the class enemy permanently attacking - and eventually successful. The song and the game were coupled in 1989 ...
