Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: ossonflags Date: 17 Mar 11 - 05:24 AM No Rog, it has been agreed that we go with The Hull Shanty festival, see new thread |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 17 Mar 11 - 05:04 AM Why not name it after that Ian McNabb song that I do "Still Got the Fever"? Rog |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: ossonflags Date: 16 Mar 11 - 12:11 PM Since we have a efinate green light on't festival time to start a new thread methinks. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 16 Mar 11 - 06:12 AM We can also accommodate a big musicians session in the boat room at the Minerva throughout the weekend (the room we use on the monthly Tuesday session and used at last year's Big Anti-Shanty). It's a great room for a session in a noted heritage pub with a good range of real ales. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 16 Mar 11 - 03:38 AM Sorry Steve we've had to settle on July 'cos of the venues who are providing funding (Minerva, Ruscadors and Fruit). You'll be missed (unless you can have the reception in the Old Town!). |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Steve Gardham Date: 15 Mar 11 - 04:54 PM 23-24 July is out for me. Eldest lad's wedding, but September should be okay. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: mally Date: 15 Mar 11 - 02:15 PM Great news Les. I can't believe it was only last Tueday I was in a very quiet Minerva talking to Phil about this. I'll have to learn some new shanties now. Mally |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Johnjo Date: 15 Mar 11 - 02:03 PM Will try & make it Les. Arrangements for the MOT have gone a bit wonky, but hopefully it'll all work out. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 15 Mar 11 - 11:49 AM I can go but Mick wouldn't be there anyway 'cos he would have been on the barricades. See you tomorrow! Les |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Johnjo Date: 15 Mar 11 - 08:41 AM Mr Flags? Lurgi? Does that mean the Hull EGMWBDC (FS) is off? My van's having it's MOT tomorrow, so I was thinking of hopping on the train for a visit to the Black Boy. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 15 Mar 11 - 07:50 AM Excellent response chaps and chapesses. No doubt that nice Mr Flags will be in touch when he's shaken off his current bout of lurgi. Looks like being a good 'un. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: GUEST,old git Date: 15 Mar 11 - 06:39 AM Need to check with the others to see if the Roaring Forties will all be available, but I certainly will...to perform, MC or whatever else is needed geoff t |

Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Paul Davenport Date: 14 Mar 11 - 06:45 PM Liz and I are free Les if you've got a space. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 14 Mar 11 - 05:21 PM Well, I know at least three sea songs (if you include "shiver me timbers" by Tom Waits)and I don't charge much :-) Rog |

Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: GUEST Date: 14 Mar 11 - 04:57 PM Well it doesn't clash with Warwick so its looking good for those Hissyfit gals! |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 14 Mar 11 - 02:27 PM There will be a Hull Sea Shanty Festival on the weekend of 23/24 July. There should be parking for campervans and we are hoping for a cheapish hotel deal. Sadly no camping. There'll be a singaround, concerts and most of the attractions of the previous Hull Shanty festivals but on a somewhat cut-down basis. Inquiries from artists, dance teams, maritime stalls could come here initially. Be warned though, there's not a lot of money available. Thanks everyone! |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Gy Morris man Date: 14 Mar 11 - 01:27 PM A labour councillor was interviewed on radio humberside, and he was berating the coucil for pulling the shanty fest. As he said the freedom festival costs more in security than the whole subsidy for a bit of shanty singing. Roll on the may elections. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Johnjo Date: 14 Mar 11 - 07:50 AM Les, would it be worth asking British Waterways if campervans could use the marina car park, or park in the boatyard? They could make a reasonable charge for overnight parking/access to toilets etc. As the sailing/boating season will still be underway, they should have plenty of space. Perhaps they could offer a special price for anyone bringing a boat for the event as well? |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Sttaw Legend Date: 14 Mar 11 - 06:38 AM Hi Les the date is settled for Freedom Festival it is the first weekend in September 2nd 3rd 4th |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 14 Mar 11 - 04:59 AM The 'problem' with the Freedom Festival is that they put up two rather loud stages near the Minerva. We like to use the old Brewery room on the East side of the pub and to keep the french doors open to interest any passing crowd. Also I'm sure that Phil and Sue at the Minerva are kept reasonably busy with the Freedom Festival crowd. We hope that local dance teams would dance out at the Pier. An outdoor PA would be very welcome, as long as the weather's OK. I too welcome the Freedom Festival, though it does rattle my windows a bit. Still no reply from the City Council as to the dates of the Freedom Festival. If any 'ull folk can think of somewhere we could use as a secure place for camper vans then that would be useful. Perhaps the Deep could help out here. I'll also see if we get a special rate at a nearby hotel like Premier Inn. If any local people have a spare bed they can offer, then we'll attempt to co-ordinate that. But we can't do anything until the Council settle a date for the Freedom Festival. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: ossonflags Date: 14 Mar 11 - 03:42 AM Thanks for that Steve.Thats the kind of positive stuff we always get from you. We have discussed several formats, but as always how we proceed will depend on support from people like yourself who are prepared to give a bit of their time to help us out. Of course there will be local elections in May so the political flavour? may change. The very least we shall be doing will be a musical weekend in The Minerva. Again thanks to all who have expressed an interest and have offered their support...........Keep Music Live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Steve Gardham Date: 13 Mar 11 - 06:42 PM Hi Les et al. No reason why you shouldn't run something same time as Freedom. I love the Freedom Festival BTW. I thought the last 2 were stunning, The fire thing in 2009 was brilliant and the balloons last year were marvellous. I have a full PA doing nothing although you probably would need an outdoor PA to run a concert outside Green Bricks. Fruit sounds like a good option. They have run folky gigs successfully recently. Has anybody asked The Deep to get involved? Has Steve been approached to get some boats up? Spider T and Phyllis are usually up for it, Syntan. I know one year Goole Museum sent Room 58 cos I remember seeing Cyril aboard. Don't remember how it got there though cos it's a lighter barge. If Mal brings Spider and Ian brings Phyllis, might even persuade Chris to bring Southcliffe if he's not gigging elsewhere. The Lottery people haven't stopped shelling out if you know somebody who enjoys filling in forms. The council have said they won't run it but they have offered support to anyone else putting stuff on. If I'm around then I'll certainly do a spot fer nowt, and drag a few others in. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: GUEST,cookieless bloke Date: 13 Mar 11 - 03:01 PM A good do last year, I'll certainly be popping over that Humber Bridge for a twang and a holler. Lawrie |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 13 Mar 11 - 02:22 PM We never had any funding! We rely on the kindness of strangers. And of course on friends who enjoy a weekend of good singing! |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: stallion Date: 13 Mar 11 - 06:20 AM Scarborough Seafest has lost it's funding, Richard Grainger is organising fund raisers but it is sh*t. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: GUEST Date: 13 Mar 11 - 03:07 AM I dont think we can wait that long Les!!!! |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 12 Mar 11 - 07:41 AM Thanks Geoff - I hope that we can let you have the dates as soon as Hull City Council get their act together. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: GUEST,old git Date: 12 Mar 11 - 07:38 AM Count me in for this again..last year was a bit thin on the ground...but this year people have more warning. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: doc.tom Date: 10 Mar 11 - 05:31 AM If you're looking for a maritime festival on the first week of September, now Hull is gone, try SeaIlfracombe (North Devon). Third year and being grown from the bottom up! Lots of local non-shanty maritime involvement (Balmoral, Aldenburg, yacht races, food trails, kayaking, rock-pool rambles, tug-o-war, etc., etc) - so we could do with building up the singing! Tom |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: ossonflags Date: 09 Mar 11 - 11:43 PM A bit o' thread creep there Comrades!! The thing is Sea Fever aint gonna happen this year and possibly next. That is........unless we run something ourselves. A radical idea I can hear some of you say, but we have proved we can do it as with The Peoples Voice in Beverley and The two shanty festivals also in Beverley - all very successful, .Trim Rig are doing something similar in a couple of weeks that we are all supporting and that is the key. We do need to get back to our roots to keep music live. And we can do that without the politicians. But we cant do it without you. Me and the very intresting and windswept Mr.Fromull were in deep consultation yesterday on trying to do this very thing. But we do need you lot out there!! I have already been in touch personally with a lot of you and there is a big interest. If you would like to support us you are very welcomealso any positive ideas are also welcome. You can pm Les ward or me for any info or just post to this site. watch this space fo further developements. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Tyke Date: 09 Mar 11 - 10:15 PM Dead right oombanjo Only this time it's the Liable Dosycats digging their own Pits! But sharing falling into them with the Conservatives. Next thing they will come up with is a Sunday Meet and Great with "The Big Sociaty" all getting together to fill in the Pot Holes in the Roads. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: oombanjo Date: 09 Mar 11 - 01:43 PM Yet another victim of your "bloody conservative government" Alf! |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Tyke Date: 09 Mar 11 - 01:01 PM Hi Les as I keep pointing out Liable Dosycats came 6th in the recent Barnsley Election. They would have come 7th if Cornel Gadfly was running in the same Election. But remember don't vote for them even if they promise to run Sea Fever forever. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Johnjo Date: 09 Mar 11 - 11:45 AM Count me in then Les. Will look forward to it, and will try not to have the car with me. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 09 Mar 11 - 08:50 AM I looks like the Freedom Festival is provisionally booked for that first weekend in September. So our weekend will be a different one! Of course this could all change if the Liberals lose in the May elections. Very popular at the moment, the Liberals! |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Barb'ry Date: 09 Mar 11 - 07:11 AM What a shame. I echo Bob and Sue's thanks to Shanty Jack for such fantastic work over the last heck of a long time. Les, we would love to come up for a mini maritime festival Barbara |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 09 Mar 11 - 04:59 AM I'm checking with the Council for the date of the Freedom Festival, John - whatever that is ours will be different! We'd like to be able to hear ourselves sing and play! |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Johnjo Date: 09 Mar 11 - 02:41 AM i'd be up for it Les, as long as it doesn't clash with the Freedom Festiival. Some of the comments in the local rag are a mite uncharitable about the Freedom Fest. My 14 year old daughter thought it was great, but I'd avoid it like the plague. Probably just a generational thing, and I'm a grumpy old git. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 08 Mar 11 - 08:29 PM I spoke to Phil and Sue at the Minerva last night. We will be aiming for the first weekend in September, and we reckon on using the Minerva and Heritage pubs and possibly the Fruit venue. Here's what the local paper says. click! I'd be glad to hear from anyone who fancies this weekend for a free Maritime Festival. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Johnjo Date: 08 Mar 11 - 02:00 PM Looks like the Freedom Festival IS in September. No-one would want to denigrate the sentiments behind it, especially given Hull's historic Wilberforce links, but it's still a shame that the 'powers that be' in Hull's Guildhall don't seem to hold the city's maritime traditions in the same high regard. Which weekend is the anti-shanty Les? |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 08 Mar 11 - 10:45 AM Way hey and up she rises! |
Subject: Hull council cancels shantey festival. From: Gy Morris man Date: 08 Mar 11 - 09:45 AM Ull council today anounced that they are not funding the shanty festival this year. It has been going for twenty plus years, it is another victim of this goverments wish to stop anything that people enjoy. I can see though that the publicans of ull will most proberbly put on an unoficial festival. Well the thought of all that beer going unsold will send shivers down thier spines. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: Les from Hull Date: 07 Mar 11 - 01:04 PM I think they hold the Freedom Festival in July. It celebrates anti-slavery and multi-culuralism so I'm certainly not against it, but it's mostly about over-load pop music. But as such it attracts a lot of people. I'm sure that it costs a lot more than the shanty festival ever did. |
Subject: RE: End of Hull Sea Fever From: GUEST,johnjo Date: 07 Mar 11 - 12:27 PM Seems a shame that the Sea Shanty festival is to be allowed to die, yet Hull City Council can still find the cash to support what it calls the 'Freedom Festival', to be held in September. Said FreedomFest will include Hull Marina as a venue. Les, will the anti-shanty Minerva thingy be on a different weekend to the Freedom Fest? John |
