It is with regret that I have to inform you that after a successful run of 21 years the City Council has reluctantly decided to pull the plug on the Festival. It was not a lightly taken decision and was forced upon them by the budget cuts with which we are all becoming familiar. At a meeting with the events team a short while ago I was apprised of the possibility of the event being axed. Unfortunately that is now the officially confirmed decision of the council. I make no secret of my bitter disappointment at this decision but having regard to the realities of the present economic situation, I have to say that it was not totally unexpected. Certainly, in September 1989 none of us could have anticipated a 21 year successful run! You will agree I am sure, that great credit is due to the Hull City Council for supporting and promoting the event up to the present time. There can be no doubt as to the success of "Sea Fever" over the years and 2010 was as good as any. Rather than suffer a slow death by attrition I am glad we were at a high point when we had to "Take a Break" . I am sure that our audiences will have good memories of the event. That has got to be a good starting point if there is any chance of starting up again in the medium term. I shall keep in close contact with the City, although obviously at this time, they are not able to give any commitment for the future. We have seen a number of events decline or fail for varying reasons in recent years but if we look for the root cause it no case was it a shortcoming in the event itself. I had always hoped that Hull would survive longer. I know we had a good product and a loyal audience. However it was not to be. To close on a more cheerful note, I would encourage you to continue to support the remaining events and particularly commend to you the forthcoming new Easter Shanty Festival at Ellesmere port. But, last year we 'filled in' for our missing Sea Fever Festival by hosting the 'Big Anti-Shanty' in the Minerva on the traditional Hull Shanty Festival of the first weekend in September. It's likely that we will do the same this year. [Anti Shanty was the term given to the unofficial Saturday night singaround we had during the Sea Fever Festival for people who didn't want to go to the Saturday concert, put preferred a more informal pub session.] |

It celebrates anti-slavery and multi-culuralism so I'm certainly not against it, but it's mostly about over-load pop music. But as such it attracts a lot of people. I'm sure that it costs a lot more than the shanty festival ever did. |

It has been going for twenty plus years, it is another victim of this goverments wish to stop anything that people enjoy. I can see though that the publicans of ull will most proberbly put on an unoficial festival. Well the thought of all that beer going unsold will send shivers down thier spines. |

A radical idea I can hear some of you say, but we have proved we can do it as with The Peoples Voice in Beverley and The two shanty festivals also in Beverley - all very successful, .Trim Rig are doing something similar in a couple of weeks that we are all supporting and that is the key. We do need to get back to our roots to keep music live.And we can do that without the politicians. But we cant do it without you. Me and the very intresting and windswept Mr.Fromull were in deep consultation yesterday on trying to do this very thing. But we do need you lot out there!! I have already been in touch personally with a lot of you and there is a big interest. I thought the last 2 were stunning, The fire thing in 2009 was brilliant and the balloons last year were marvellous. I have a full PA doing nothing although you probably would need an outdoor PA to run a concert outside Green Bricks. Fruit sounds like a good option. They have run folky gigs successfully recently. Has anybody asked The Deep to get involved? Has Steve been approached to get some boats up? Spider T and Phyllis are usually up for it, Syntan. I know one year Goole Museum sent Room 58 cos I remember seeing Cyril aboard. Don't remember how it got there though cos it's a lighter barge. If Mal brings Spider and Ian brings Phyllis, might even persuade Chris to bring Southcliffe if he's not gigging elsewhere. The Lottery people haven't stopped shelling out if you know somebody who enjoys filling in forms. The council have said they won't run it but they have offered support to anyone else putting stuff on. If I'm around then I'll certainly do a spot fer nowt, and drag a few others in. |

We like to use the old Brewery room on the East side of the pub and to keep the french doors open to interest any passing crowd. Also I'm sure that Phil and Sue at the Minerva are kept reasonably busy with the Freedom Festival crowd. We hope that local dance teams would dance out at the Pier. An outdoor PA would be very welcome, as long as the weather's OK. I too welcome the Freedom Festival, though it does rattle my windows a bit. Still no reply from the City Council as to the dates of the Freedom Festival. If any 'ull folk can think of somewhere we could use as a secure place for camper vans then that would be useful. Perhaps the Deep could help out here. I'll also see if we get a special rate at a nearby hotel like Premier Inn. If any local people have a spare bed they can offer, then we'll attempt to co-ordinate that. But we can't do anything until the Council settle a date for the Freedom Festival. |

They could make a reasonable charge for overnight parking/access to toilets etc. As the sailing/boating season will still be underway, they should have plenty of space. Perhaps they could offer a special price for anyone bringing a boat for the event as well? |

There should be parking for campervans and we are hoping for a cheapish hotel deal. Sadly no camping. There'll be a singaround, concerts and most of the attractions of the previous Hull Shanty festivals but on a somewhat cut-down basis. Inquiries from artists, dance teams, maritime stalls could come here initially. Be warned though, there's not a lot of money available. Thanks everyone! |
