Subject: Origins: Does anyone know this song?
From: pavane
Date: 07 Mar 11 - 11:35 AM

Sung in the Ivy Bush 1973 by residents/floor singers Lynne & Paul

I would like to know its name & origins - couldn't find it on searching

Come all (?oh?, oe'r?) you lovely Molly, come give to me the time
When you and I are married, in wedlock we'll combine
When you and I are married, ??? well we will agree
For you are the bonny lass to tak the road wi me

To tak the road wi you kind sir, cold winter's coming on
Likewise me aged parents they have no ???????
Likewise me aged parents they have nae one but me
For ???? the bonny lass to tak the road wi thee

If that doesn't do it, I can transcribe more verses

Archie Fisher sang it on the air in 1968 or 69, as demonstrated by this YouTube video. There's a start, anyway.

Yes, certainly the right song, but a rather different version.

You can hear it here, recorded on an old portable cassette recorder

Ivy Bush floor singers

Lynne & Paul's version differs from Archie Fisher's, too.
I think I prefer their version. Let me know what you think

It was titled "Tak the road" on Archie Fisher's LP called "Orfeo" from the late 60's. A beautiful little song. I tried to learn it from the recording but without the right accent, it just doesn't scan.   No more details I'm afraid.

I don't apprehend much difference between the two versions, other than Lynne's lovely strong harmony...but I can't hear it well enough to get much detail. Your memory may be helping you hear.
