My cases have no stickers, so (a la Colonel Maverick) if you see someone carrying an un-stickered case, IT'S MINE.
Slightly off the topic, but ay a folky party in the early 70s, I saw someone (Clive Pownceby, if memory serves) wearing a home-made badge which read "Folk Against Travolta". I think of that whenever I hear the thumping great disco beat which now seems to be behind everything at folk festivals.

I used to have a guitar (not a case) on which I had placed a sticker: "EXUBERANCE IS BEAUTY"--a quote from William Blake. I did it to reassure myself, thinking exuberance was something I could achieve. Alas, it overstates the case.

Following my daughter's example my laptop sports a few stickers, mainly peeled off plastic labels from beer bottles: "DOOMBAR" & "Tomos Watkins - Cwrw Haf" Plus a sticker from "Sunshine Village - Banff" (memories of a ski trip there)

I once played for a grade three class. I put my mandolin case on the teacher's desk while I sang with the kids. The teacher told me afterwards that the kids got a laugh out of the "Big Ass Garage Sale" sticker on the case. I no longer own that case, but the present owner hasn't removed the sticker.

The same case had a sticker that said,"I ___ My Cat". In the ___was a symbol for the suit "spade". It always amazed me how many people read it as "I Love (Heart) My Cat" instead of "I Spade (Spayed) My Cat".

Stickers are pretty much essential for identifying instruments which are carried in a lot of identical cases. My concertina cases have the flaming skull and crossbones and NULLI SECUNDUS motto of Cliffe Bonfire Society, which helpfully implies that the contents might be explosive or poisonous or both, but I rather fancy making one which says
I SPEED UP FOR PHEASANTS.

My only revised-by-scissors sticker now reads Offenders of Wired Life. My favorite contemporary stickers are successive left to right, top to bottom "In a time of universal deceit telling the truth is a revolutinary act" (Orwell), "The important thing is not to stop questioning" (Einstein), and "War is not the answer" on the mandola case. No, not much case showing.:) My longest lasting lettering is on a really crappy guitar case, stencil painted "Jose's Appliances, King of all advertising." A VERY small number of people, mostly on the west coast of the USA, would get that one.

Glenn Ohrlin did the picture in acrylic paints in about 20 minutes. He used to help with his expenses on the rodeo circuit by doing this kind of art on store windows in the towns on the circuit in tempera. He said he would charge $3 for the picture, and he could do one in about 5 minutes. I'm really privileged to have this on 35 year old Mark Leaf case. He signed it with the Rafter O, his brand.

I haven't seen it on a guitar, but a local (small) used car dealership had -- posted for several years --

(which should strike true fear in anyone who's ever even been close to a small, spoiled, sugared-up hyper child?????)

Along with "brand names" a popular one on cases in the region includes an appropriate skeletal skull emblem, with:

        "TUNE IT OR DIE"

Also fairly freequently:

        "PLEASE KEEP THE LID LATCHED
        SO THE MUSIC DOESN'T GET OUT.

Occasionally seen:

        "EVEN A LITTLE PRACTICE WOULD HELP"

Very popular at our big festival in Winfield KS, thanks to a distribution by a local sorority a couple of years ago - but very difficult to get, for those who want one due to subsequent non-appearance by the girls:

        "GIRLS GONE WINFIELD"

The "play" on the "Girls Gone Wild" videos might be useful with something other than "Winfield" anywhere that the shows are reasonably known, and one doesn't really have to admit ever having seen one of the "Gone Wild" shows.

I get frequent comment on the one on my washtubs that says:

        "PLEASE STAND BACK, MUSICIAN AT WORK"

I used to put stickers on my cases, then got out of the habbit. Then I got soft cases, so I couldn't anymore. I got several "Escape to Wisconsin" stickers and cut them up so it would spell "Apes in Wisconsin." I understand someone else did that and spelled out See Nice Cows in Wisconsin. Other stickers were usually places where we played or radio stations.

Bob, remember the guy we ran into in Berkeley in 1959? He looked a bit like a dark-haired and somewhat degenerate version of Harpo Marx, and he carried a guitar case with a sticker on the neck that said "PLEASE." We asked him what that was all about, and he said that he had the other parts of his message in the case, ready when necessary. One of them said "EAST" and the other said "WEST."

It seems he spent time in both Berkeley and in Boston, and he traveled back and forth by hitchhiking. If he was in Berkeley and heading for Boston, he would stick "EAST" on the case so it read "EAST PLEASE," then he'd get someone to drop him off on a highway heading east out of town. He said that usually it wouldn't be more than about fifteen minutes before someone would stop to pick him up. And, of course, the "WEST" one if he was headed from Boston to Berkeley.
