Subject: RE: Obit: Joe Morello RIP March 2011 From: MartinRyan Date: 12 Mar 11 - 06:25 PM Yeah - sorry to hear that. I was always fond of Paul Desmond's alto playing and Morello's drumming. Just didn't like Brubeck, I guess! Regards |
Subject: RE: Obit: Joe Morello RIP March 2011 From: Will Fly Date: 12 Mar 11 - 06:58 PM One of the world's greatest drummers ever. Saw him with the Brubeck outfit at the Manchester Free Trades Hall around 1966 or so. I don't care for drum solos, but he was mesmerising - and his continuous one-handed roll on the snare was spectacular! |

Subject: RE: Obit: Joe Morello RIP March 2011 From: fat B****rd Date: 13 Mar 11 - 09:26 AM I always found his playing much more aggressive and dynamic in his solos. Like Mr.Ryan above I didn't(don't)care much for Dave Brubeck music in general but I do like Joe's playing. RIP Mr. Morello. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Joe Morello RIP March 2011 From: Art Thieme Date: 13 Mar 11 - 04:18 PM I saw them a few years running at the Indiana Jazz Festival---1956, 1957. It was the time of Take Five and TIME OUT being new. Blue Rondo Ala Turk. For me, Brubeck was just there, and ok I guess---but Desmond was the best at the lyric laid back tunes. I have a recording of Desmond and Chet Baker and Barney Kessel and some others doing a jazz CONCERTO ARANJUES by Rodrigo. It was simply sublime. I am sorry to hear of the passing of Joe Morello. Their music, before folk took me over, was the great alternative to A.M. radio top 40 pap that still continues today as treakely nostalgia doo-wap B.S. music. Just one guys opinion. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Obit: Joe Morello RIP March 2011 From: MartinRyan Date: 13 Mar 11 - 04:38 PM Art Been replaying an album of Desmond playing with Gerry Mulligan in a pianolesss quartet- Little and Large, as the Brits would say... Lovely music. Regards |
Subject: RE: Obit: Joe Morello RIP March 2011 From: Leadfingers Date: 13 Mar 11 - 08:30 PM A drummer I used to know told me Morello played a different rhythm with all four appendages to get some of the Time Out bits right ! One SCARY good player ! And Brubeck was one of the better Small Combo arrangers on the scene , though NOT the best pianist ! |
