Ernie-

There is a procedure, sending a PM to one of the "Joe Clones," but in my opinion the correction is unnecessary.

Thanks Charlie,

And both are fine pieces of work. I wish I had some small talent for producing such worthwhile additions to our songs. But the good news is that there are more already out there for me to discover than I'll ever find, as busily as I may go after them.

I will fix my copies of the data. I'm not sure there is a way for me to replace an already existing post with a corrected copy ... does anyone know if there is? If there is, I'll wait for any other updates and then submit a change. If not, at least the information is now in the thread.

Ernie

Ernie-

An excellent job! And you kept much better track of who was in the room than I ever did.

However, "Roll the Cotton Down" while part of the chorus is not the name of C. Fox Smith's poem which is titled "Mobile Bay." It gets more complicated in that her poem is a tribute to the traditional shanty "Roll the Cotton Down" which she collected a version of as published in A BOOK OF SHANTIES, © 1927.

Oh, and "Steamboat Day" should be "Steamboat Days."

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

The March Shanty Session was great fun, as usual.

Acting as note-taker in Linn's absence was an interesting experience, and has certainly increased my appreciation for the effort she puts into the task. Following are the details as best as I was able to record them. Many thanks to those who helped me identify folks and shantys not already familiar to me. As the task seemed to become strangely easier with successive quaffs of Guiness, I would urge you all to scan the list for errors, and post any needed corrections or additions. Here goes:

Yes, Ernie was taking careful notes on who was singing what. And he was also doing a fine job leading songs.

I led, I think,

Mid-Watches, my setting for this poem by Burt Franklin Jenness
Bully in the Alley - traditional shanty
Mobile Bay, my setting for this poem by Cicely Fox Smith
Steamboat Days- my new song commemorating the coastal steamer route from Bath to Boothbay
Laying on the Screw, my setting for this stevedore poem by Australian poet Edwin J. Brady
The Outside Track, by Australian poet Henry Lawson as arranged for singing by Gerry Hallom.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I kept my germs at home.

"Don't take those germs to town, girl, don't take those germs to town."

Tom told me (in no great detail, though he said he tried once and it didn't work) about singing "Ratcliff Highway".

I look forward to Ernie posting the song list here.

I didn't make it. I had a headache, and didn't get enough sleep--I was fighting to stay awake here. I wouldn't have sung much, and everybody seems to have germs I don't want to adopt. I hope to hear more about what I missed.

It was a nice mellow session, with about 12 to 14 singers. I think everyone got about 6 turns.
Tom did try out a couple of songs, and they were good ones to break the ice. Nor and I certainly had a great time but more about that tomorrow.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Nor will definitely be coming with me.

We both have some new songs we'd like to try out with a live crowd. Generally the folks at the Press Room are "live."

Happy to be hearing from all. It.s good to have Nor coming back, and it's been far too long since we've seen our Number One Ranger.

Don't get your hopes up as to my singing. I do not so much carry a tune as I do drag it around in a sack, and it is limited (barely) to a single octave of indeterminate pitch, bereft of tone and volume.

Saturday - Tom

I might make it down. I took the weekend off in honor of my upcoming birthday so that I could go down and join in on Saturday. Kind of my birthday present to myself.

Linn-

My favorite kind of news!

Nor is planning to carpool with me. We need to practice singing more of our songs as a duo.

Roll & Go is fine as a group but we're breaking out smaller combinations for some songs.

I just (finally) posted the play list from the February session. (Thanks for the nudge, Ernie.)

Alas, I will not be at this Saturday's session (nor the Friday session) thanks to a big trunk show/extravaganza at work.

BTW, this may be a good place to announce (as those of you at Facebook already know) that last Friday, Tom sang! He's been singing quietly along for the past several months, finding his new voice and its limitations (volume, for one thing -- he needs his personal amplifier at The Press Room). Then, Friday when I was singing "The Nurse Pinched the Baby" he surprised me by joining in, loudly enough that not only could I hear him, but the rest of the session could, too. That was fantastic enough, but he later topped it by standing up, putting his foot on the chair and his hand behind his ear and singing "The Bonnie Earl of Murray" -- and brought down the house.

He sees Dr. Zeitels in about a month -- who knows what else Dr. Z has up his sleeve. And then there's the bio-gel which still needs FDA approval before it can help Tom AND Kendall.

I'm planning to be there, and will try to save room for a pint or two of Guiness until then.

I could use some quality time singing with friends.
