My mistake - the readings are from the autobiography of Lord George Sanger's grandson, not his son. There are some extraordinary stories in them about stunts which certainly wouldn't get past today's health and safety regulations, and with good reason.

Every time we've done the show it's led to one or two more bookings, so we may find that the Oxfordshire performance (Village Hall, Kingham) sends us gradually northwards.

The performance at Lewes Town Hall is drawing some old school friends out of the woodwork, including a teacher whom I haven't seen since 1972.

None of them sound far enough North for us, shame.

We aren't going to be at Whitby this year, but we will be doing the show in Chipping Norton (or somewhere near Oxford, anyway) on 17th. June and as part of the Crawley Folk Festival on the afternoon of 25th. June. We're also doing it at Rottingdean Library on Friday 21st. October.

Will you be bringing the show to Whitby? Or anywhere North of Brum?

The slides are extraordinary. When they are projected, you see all sorts of detail you miss in printed images on a page and they take on a three-dimensional quality. There are some wonderful pictures of ox-ploughing on the Downs, windmills, haymaking, and so on; the ones of Sanger's Circus show elephants processing through Lewes and there are some vivid readings from the autobiography of Sanger's son to go with them.

Images, traditional songs and readings about life on the land in Sussex at the time the Lewes Phoenix Foundry opened in 1832 and the changes it brought to working people's lives. The show was originally put together for the Lewes Phoenix Oral History Project.

The images are supplied by Allan and Rene Marriott's Magic Lantern, the Victorian ancestor of the slide projector. The show will include many rare slides of old Lewes from the Archaeological Society's private collection, including a feature on a visit by Sanger's Circus in 1886.

The lantern will also show an entertaining group of novelty slides with special effects, many of them humorous.

Music from Spare Parts Concertina Band.

The concertina, invented in 1827 by the great British engineer Sir Charles Wheatstone, was at the height of its popularity at the same time as the Magic Lantern and also when the Phoenix Foundry was at its busiest.

To add to the general effect, the performers will be in costume.

In aid of the Sussex Archaeological Society
