Subject: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: ossonflags Date: 17 Mar 11 - 05:56 AM Yes folks I am pleased to announce the Hull Shanty Festival is going ahead. Not in its official form with money from that naughty Hull City Council, but a home grown one with collaboration of local buisnesses and Publicans from the Minerva, Ruscadors, Fruit market, me , Shanty Jack and Les Ward. Therefore it will be on a shoe-string budget with up to 10 named acts being paid basic expenses and possibly some accommodation, food & drink. We have been advised that there will be room for campervans and some budget B and B. We have agreed to call it The Hull Shanty Festival 2011. It will be a two day event with main venues being the Minerva for singarounds and a separate room for musicians. There will be an open air staged area outside Ruscadors with spots acts inside and out.An informal meet and greet at the Minerva on the Friday night hosted be Les and Maggie Fruit to get sponsored real ale bar Exhibition of Coble and keelboat at fruit and possible workshops in Humber street area To avoid any confusion I have been appointed to handle and coordinate arrangements for acts/ performers spots etc. so I would really appreciate people getting in touch personally with me to arrange a spot for you. If you pm me I will send me email details phone etc. I have been in touch with a few people and will be contacting many more. Friday evening meet and greet at Minerva 7 - 11 pm Saturday Evening concert at the Fruit a new venue seating 200 tickets to go on sale (about £7 each to be confirmed) 7 - 11 pm 5 x 45 minute spots, licensed bar this has to be pushed in order to get the cash to pay the main acts reasonable expenses (I am expecting therefore £2-300 per act minimum for the 2 days) if the concert is a sell-out another one can easily be arranged on Sat or Sun evening at Ruscadors for up to 120 people or in the Minerva for 50 theatre style! The acts move round. Everyone needs to be aware this is being done on a very, very limited budget so there will be no big fees around but we will appreciate any help that can be given. We will be trying to defray costs with raffles and bucket collections. I think that it is about it for now, I will keep everyone updated on progress to date |

Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: Les from Hull Date: 18 Mar 11 - 03:39 PM Thanks Geoff. I think that publicity is the main thing at the moment so any help/suggestions in this area will be welcome. And thanks Rog. We will have a fairly constant singaround throughout the weekend (including spots from the festival guests - a format always used by the Hull Shanty Fests, thanks to Shanty Jack). We will also have the famous Saturday Night Anti-Shanty to give less emphasis to the maritime theme. At last I'm free to promote the Anti-Shanty without feeling that I'm running down the Festival and my (now former) employers! We would, of course, be delighted to see you. Les |

Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: Les from Hull Date: 05 Jul 11 - 06:51 PM There will be run singarounds both afternoons in the Brewery Room at the Minerva, and sessions in the Boat Room in the Minerva. Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: Soldier boy Date: 05 Jul 11 - 08:40 PM Hi Mick. Just seeking some clarification. Will this festival be a mix of all types of folk music and song, or as the title suggests, will it all revolve around 'Shanty' songs? Sorry to come across as perhaps a bit negative, but whilst I like the odd shanty song a lot, a full weekend of ceaseless shanty songs would just be too much and would do my head in and drive me away! I am asking this question only because I think that others reading this thread and considering going to the festival may feel the same way and be put off by the prospect of unending shanties and decide not to bother. There are only a limited number of shanties that people can sing along with or half know, without endless repetition, over an entire weekend. So I am concerned that the emphasis on "Shanty" in the festival's title could be too inclusive and drive others away. As I said I am not meaning to be negative, so I am hopefull that you can put the record straight, in your own best interests, and let people know about the diversity of acts and song over the weekend so you can pull the crowds in and not just focus on such a narrow interest. Chris |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: Noreen Date: 05 Jul 11 - 10:00 PM Chris, it's a Shanty festival! Quoting from the website: a quality event is planned that will help to keep "Shantying" and maritime traditions alive in the City of Hull. Perhaps if you do go along, you will find your statement There are only a limited number of shanties that people can sing along with or half know, without endless repetition, over an entire weekend to be very far from the truth- shanties, by their nature, are meant to be joined in with and easily picked up. Also, you will see from the website that not all those appearing are shanty crews, for example the lovely Linda and Hazel of Hissyfit, the Davenports and the Evardsons, who sing sea songs rather than shanties. There are plenty of festivals which cater for 'a mix of all types of folk music and song' as you put it. This shanty festival is an opportunity to focus on our oral maritime traditions which are deeply rooted in Hull and environs. Wish I could be there! |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 06 Jul 11 - 05:04 AM I, too, would lose the will to live after too many shanties but I'm sure, knowing the people involved, that it will be a broad church. I'm planning to sing a new Steve Earle song about the Bay of Mexico oil spill - not very shanty like but definitely related to the fishing industry of that area. Roger |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: ossonflags Date: 06 Jul 11 - 06:40 AM Thats the idea Rog.!!!! any one who has been to Hull Shanty Fest will know that "shanty" is a broad definition. We do expect, however, for the most part for it to have a maritime theme as the name suggests. If you look at the line up of paid guests will give you an idea of what to expect.Anything maritime themed is ok.We also will have Hull Community Theatre and dance teams. Sat night in't Minerva and Sunday night in Ruscadors will be a mixed job. The only payed event is the Concert at Fruit £5 admission. Even there I have tried to give a balance of Shanty Crews, maritime contempory singer songwriters as Hissyfit, Anna Shannon etc. My advice to you Chris is come along, chill out join in and enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!! We all know it's never dull in'ull!!!! |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: GUEST,Blowzabella sans cookie Date: 06 Jul 11 - 02:22 PM As someone who was part of the organising team for Lancaster Maritime Festival, for 20 years, I'd like to reassure anyone who has doubts about attending that there is nothing dull or 'narrow' about a festival devoted to seasongs and shanties. They are some of the most amazing songs in the lyricism, rhythm and scope of subject - and, with the older songs, show traces of many different cultures contributing to them (ships' crews were made up of people from many countries) - they truly are the first and best example of that oh-so trendy phrase 'World Music' They commemorate the most tragic tales - the greatest endeavours - losses which affected whole communities. As well as lots of stories about loose women - what more could you want??? I really hope it goes well in Hull - sadly, having two unsociable and unsocialised border collies, who I can't leave with anyone at the moment ... I can't be with you. Hopefully, next year when these two are more ... erm ... normal |

Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: Soldier boy Date: 06 Jul 11 - 07:53 PM Ok folks, I hear you and appreciate your comments. Trouble is, I am from land-locked Huddersfield in West Yorkshire and feared I might get seasick on the ever rolling boat! But if I can get to it I am sure that I will thoroughly enjoy it in very good company. Didn't mean to diss you Mick owld lad because I know you do lots of sterling work for the folk scene and this festival. Just some concern in me head that too many endless shanties might get a bit tiresome after a while but I think that you and other contributors here have (sort of) answered that question. Many thanks. Chris |

Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: Paul Davenport Date: 07 Jul 11 - 12:55 PM Soldier Boy get yourself over to the Hull Shanty Festival and I promise we'll sing you loads of maritime songs and no shanties. Of course I can't speak for the rest of the gang but then you can't have it all. |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: Les from Hull Date: 07 Jul 11 - 01:44 PM Chris - the name 'shanty festival' can be misleading, but the many shanty festivals up and down the country have a similar format. I suppose 'maritime song festival' wouldn't help the general public understand what really goes on. Shanty crews sing mostly shanties, but there are many other acts who sing maritime songs about fishing, whaling, barges or songs featuring sailors ashore. There are stacks of songs that mention sailors. I've even sung Lyle Lovett's If I Had A Boat on the basis that it's an unrequited sailing song! For many years Maggie and I have run the Saturday night singaround on the basis that it doesn't have to be maritime songs. Indeed, it used to be termed the 'Anti-Shanty' for this reason, although Maggie and I sing lots of maritime songs. We'll have this session in the Minerva on Saturday night as usual. We've also arranged for a room for a tune session thoughout the weekend, but we don't expect them to only play the Sailor's Hornpipe or the Full-Rigged Ship! I know what you mean though, mate. If I have to listen to that one about John Kanaka's knackers again... |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: Soldier boy Date: 07 Jul 11 - 02:15 PM Well stated Paul and Les, thank you. Bye the way Mick, if the list for free camping has now closed, does that mean that no more camping places are available at all or is there more 'to pay for' camping available nearby ( If I can come I only have a small tent and car and when I say 'camping available nearby' I mean within a shortish stroll from the main festival venues?) Chris |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: GeoffLawes Date: 07 Jul 11 - 02:35 PM Mick says above that the camping is now full. If anyone wants cheap accommodation then there is a new Travelodge, Hull Central, which has been open only a few weeks and when I last looked the prices were: Friday 22 July £29, Sat23 £ 32.50, Sun 24 £25. It is located 6-7 minutes away from the Marina. Link Here The postcode for the Minerva venue is HU1 1XE which you might find handy to input to get the Travelodge system to summon the correct hotel up. |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: Soldier boy Date: 07 Jul 11 - 09:37 PM You call that cheap as the only alternative accomodation/camping. No way man, I have to watch me pennies! The local Council has obviously limited the spaces for camping due to 'health and safety' issues to ensure that this festival cannot grow, prosper and thrive and will deny the local community real income and future prosperity from such an event. It's such a shame, but there must be a way to get around it by using the local schools, football, rugby fields and clubs etc to accomodate such an event. Surely! So, see ya in Whitby I guess, and I'm out of here! Chris |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: Les from Hull Date: 08 Jul 11 - 08:38 AM Hull City Council are the main sponsors of this event, but they aren't the organisers. It would be too much work to organise a tent campsite for the one or two people who might want to put up a tent. Hull is a big city and the original Sea Fever festival that was run by the Council never had a campsite. It would cost a fortune to have a tent site with toilets, showers and security. The campervan site we have is limited in size but it's the only secure area we could get near the festival. We are running this festival on a shoestring. The City Council only came in later (when the ruling party changed!) and we are grateful for the artists who are appearing for reduced fees or for no fee at all and the volunteers and dance teams who are giving their time for nowt (there's no benefit in getting a free ticket for a free festival). Maybe somebody'll let you put up your tent in their back garden. Unfortunely my floor space is all occupied and I don't have a garden. |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: GUEST,ossonflags sans cookie Date: 09 Jul 11 - 04:52 AM Thanks for that Les, just to echo some of your comments; Well, we thought we had covered every problem; but no!! Chris, Hull is a large city!!!Schools and whatever still cost money to organise and man, apart that this is a new event for us and we do not know what the footfall of the festival will be. More importantly we are on limited funds. This festival has run for twenty one years and I have been to most of'em.In all that time I havent known of any camping available, free or otherwise, but I am sure some one will correct me if I am wrong. For the first time ever we have managed to secure some limited campervan and caravan space near the event, basicly for artists and Stewards helpers and others on a first come first served basis. .Other people, myself included, have kindly offered to put others up in their homes. It is nowt to do with the council limiting spaces to stifle the festival - but we do have to follow very stringent Health and Safety procedures and policys or we stand the chance of being shut down. A lot of bloody hard work has gone into this festival by mostly vollunteers and we do welcome positive ideas, help and comments This festival has not been organised or run by the HCC although we have taken some advice, help and guidance from them. It is been run by a small band of willing vollunteers and some limited funding and sponsorship and yes, we have had a large chunk donated by the Hull City Council. This does not mean they have taken control, far from it. I think now is a good chance now to list and thank all our sponsers for their support and encoragement. Our artistes, commitee and stewards are listed and recognised in the programme and to them I extend a massive thank you from the commitee and myself. Sponsers: Hull City Council Ruscadors Minerva Fruit Hull bid Dunston sip repairers ltd. GMB Musicians Union The Yorkshire Garland Group. The Wilson |

Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: GeoffLawes Date: 10 Jul 11 - 07:07 PM I think ( but am not entirely sure ) that the GUEST posting above about Roper Street may not lead to quite what most festival goers are looking for since one web site says Church Housing Trust raises charitable funds to support English Churches Housing Group's work with homeless and vulnerable people. An interesting option if you have transport and want a hostel might be Beveley Youth Hostel at the Friary (but it is about 10 miles from the venues). |

Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: GUEST,SteveG Date: 15 Jul 11 - 03:48 AM Re camping and accommodation. The town docks around which the festival centres are right in the middle of a large city. There are no schools with field space or suitable open spaces to hold organised camping with facilities. However for future events we could look at, with the council on board, other possibilities. For instance there is a huge tract of waste land that used to be St Andrew's Dock, which might be used. This would involve campers having a pleasant stroll into town along Riverside Quay passing the ships in Albert & Wm Wright Dock, no further than the walk from Whitby camp site into Whitby. St Andrew's Quay has several eateries and all the council would need to put up is some security, bogs and mobile washroom. Hope the festival goes well and that the weather stays fine. I will be there in spirit. If anyone asks why the Humber Keels aren't there, rather strangely they're holding their own event at South Ferriby Sluice the same weekend. Hmmm. Some joined-up thinking needed here. |
Subject: RE: Hull Shanty Festival 23rd 24th July 2011 From: GUEST,Shanty Jack Date: 15 Jul 11 - 06:09 AM Festival Running Orders are now posted on our web page. You can download them now! www.hullshantyfestival.co.uk In reply to guest SteveG: It's not a case of no joined up thinking. The Keel & Sloop event was planned before our event got under way. In any case our event is not centred on the Marina this time. Although the Marina did not charge "Sea Fever" any fees (Indeed they gave free berthing to appropriate vessels) the costs of staging an event on the quayside are quite prohibitive. Such costs are realistically not achieveable without much greater levels of sponsorship. |
