I heard it first, I think, on The Committee Band's "Dancemusic" album. From the sleeve notes :

"10. Mad Moll of the Cheshire hunts / Enrico Intro + 32 bar hopstep x 8

Two well-known English tunes, played as hopsteps. Mad Moll was collected by Cecil Sharp from John Locke of Leominster and is published in John Kirkpatrick and Sue Harris's collection Opus pocus. Enrico is from the Hardy family manuscript Tunes for the violin and is published in Joan Brocklebank's collection The Dorchester hornpipe."

So they use it in a fairly hornpipe-y way and not too fast.

Thanks for the very useful link John - jaunty indeed! I don't fancy playing it like that meself, but it's a nice version - I can just imagine myself in Casterbridge... :-)

The Mellstock Band, who specialise in Hardy stuff, also play it slightly dotted as ypu can hear via this link.

In sessions I've mostly heard it played straighter and slower and that's how I play it. However, the Mellstock dance speed version is very jaunty.

I've finally got around to getting to grips with that good old tune "Enrico" or "Henry Coe" (a favourite of Thomas Hardy).

Any thoughts on a good tempo and rhythm for this one? Here's a sweet little version of it on YouTube: Enrico. Nice tempo and a pleasant sound from the nylon strings. He's playing it in more of a hornpipe rhythm (dotted), and I'd assumed it was a reel and therefore a bit more equal in rhythm.

Just curious as to how other 'Catters play it for listening (not dancing).
