The only way would the writer be mentioned would in a metedata. Itunes have them. Not sure on Amazon. This lyrics isnt readily available online If it was a popular chances are it may have the writers. Also some songs where the writers are know is used as a trad piece. Ie Ae Fond Kiss |

But what you need to post is information that is very clear about where it comes from - where you found it, whether it was in print or a recording or whatever. It's important to know who did the transcription, if it was taken from a recording or live performance. If you don't know the songwriter name and you're pretty sure it's not a traditional song, put something like: (from the singing of Raffi, songwriter unknown). Also, note that there have been two previous threads on this song, and you started one of them. Be sure to use the Filter to look for previous threads you can post to. -Joe- |

It took me all of two minutes to find out that the song Loch Maree is a copyright work. It was put out in sheet music as well as recordings. Runrig fan, when you re-use the poetic words of a writer, if it is a modern work then the effort should be taken to credit that writer. It breaches copyright to use their words without license or at least giving them a name check, even if they are dead and can't do much about it! Also a lot of the ethos of a site like this is to get to the bottom of the origins of songs. Mudcat Cafe has always been a good source for that purpose. It would be sad if people just start to moronically post lyrics with no thought as to who wrote them, like a lot of the clickbait lyric sites In my opinion, if you don't know (unless you know it's a true trad. song or are trying to find out who wrote it), don't post! A little research usually turns up a reasonable answer. Just my opinion! |

The lyrics are not traditional. You are one of those people who fall into the trap of thinking if something is old style Scottish and has been around for a while it must be traditional. A song does not in UK/European terms become traditional until 70 years after the death of the author/composer. Sadly, you don't seem to care. Anyway, this song was written by Roy D. And it is often easy to find who wrote them in two minutes. There is a whole article about this song which you can find if you Google the title, that's the useful information to post, where a song comes from - how it was written, and who by (not always true though!). Occasionally you might well be asking about a traditional derivative, but not in this particular instance. Sadly, there are people who now credit the artist performing the song as is they wrote it when all they've done is recorded it, and had no part in its authorship or composition. If it's Trad. often you will see Trad. Arr. by. However, in this case it was obviously a modern work. When you do find a trad. work it is true that people on Mudcat like to collect lyric variations or parodies. Sometimes a singer will add bits or change the song. However, this does not give them any part of the copyright, unless its trad. Giving correct information is important as you can have people stealing songs due to the misinformation that you might put out, as this gets brought up by Google. This leads to loss of copyright, and hurts the writer or their family. For some of us sad individuals, posterity is important. Mudcat is often a good research resource, and a way of storing extra information on songs, along with copyright society databases. It would be sad if that gets lost in careless attribution of lyrics. But you credited Anne Lorne Gillies, who was only the singer - not the author or composer. This then leads to misinformation which can snowball. The singer or band is not always the originator of the work. It's difficult to explain.. but there are copyright societies throughout the world who store song registrations used for the crediting and royalty collection when songs are licensed for broadcasting and recording. So you should credit the registered writer/s if it's a modern song, (unless there is some factual error), along with the lyric. Joe gave a good guide as to Mudcat's accepted requirement for lyric additions. You don't just blindly put the performer/recording artist down as the originator of the work. I Hope that is clear for the future! |

It is your responsibility before you post to try and ascertain where a song comes from. Different if a song is trad. or you are just asking about the origins or a full set. Don't post lyrics at all to be permanently stored unless you are sure. You can sometimes help set the record straight... like as you say McLean's...Glencoe. It's the thing of common sense. Unfortunately many singers and recording artists or their record companies are totally ignorant, or chance their arm making false trad. claims. on modern works - or just make errors. Frequently there will be printing errors on old record covers. It's different for me as I can look up the MCPS/PRS copyright society database and do a check to see which is likely to be the most accurate registration. The collective mind of Mudcatters is also often a good research tool. If you are unsure, ask others before you wrongly attribute lyrics to be permanently stored. |

It does help if people specify what they know and what they don't know about the song they're posting. It's my job to clean things up before they're ready to be indexed, or to be included in the Digital Tradition. When I see a song that's ready for indexing, I standardize the format and check it through to make sure that it's as complete and correct and documented as we can get it. You'll see that the lyrics posted by Jim Dixon and verified by Jim McLean are highlighted. But it's a process and it takes time, and people do take a while to get used to it.
