Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Loch Maree From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 10 May 17 - 01:04 PM Please do not post lyrics without crediting the writer or giving the origins of the song. It is copyright theft, and an insult to any writer or their family. If it is a trad. song please say so. Too many lyrics sites are ripping off and demeaning songwriters by crediting artists and not the writers. Also on this site, people like to know the origins of songs. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Loch Maree From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 10 May 17 - 01:31 PM The above lyric is a copyright work from a song written by Roy D. Ford and published by Bosworth and Co. The song was the winner in a 1966 Scottish song competition was performed by Moira Anderson. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Loch Maree From: RunrigFan Date: 10 May 17 - 02:56 PM I was about to credit the writer but caught the enter but since you cant edit I have to say Roy D. Ford here |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Loch Maree From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 10 May 17 - 04:27 PM Thanks Runrig fan, I just accidentally hit the send button myself. Mudcat Cafe can be a pain, as you can't edit - many a thing I would like to delete or add to. Many misspellings or accidentally hit keys! Just so in future people know to credit the lyric. I hate lyrics sites that don't give credit or information, instead mentioning the performing artist. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Loch Maree From: Tattie Bogle Date: 10 May 17 - 08:11 PM Happens all the time on YouTube too! If I see an improperly credited video, I just can't resist putting the right attributions in! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Loch Maree From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 10 May 17 - 09:02 PM We are both singing from the same page Mr. Bogle. Glad to see somebody actually caring. Half the time, the correct writers are no longer even mentioned - including when used on downloads, streaming, youtube videos, lyric sites etc. Songs are becoming anonymous devalued entities in this crazy Internet world. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Loch Maree From: Joe Offer Date: 10 May 17 - 10:01 PM Here are song-posting guidelines I posted for somebody else today.
Posted By: Joe Offer 10-May-17 - 08:56 PM Thread Name: Songs/Poems of Joe Wilson Subject: RE: Lyr Add: LAUGHING EYES.
Got source information for any of these, Conrad? Is Joe Wilson the singer or the songwriter for this? The more context you can provide, the easier people can appreciate what you're posting. Otherwise, it's like you're just dumping a bunch of threads that nobody's likely to read. The idea is that we'd like to have songs here that are in usable and findable format, and we'd like to have threads that encourage discussion and don't serve merely as dumping grounds for lyrics. -Joe Offer, Mudcat Music Editor- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Loch Maree From: RunrigFan Date: 10 May 17 - 10:04 PM The downloads will only mention the performer, title and album. The only way would the writer be mentioned would in a metedata. Itunes have them. Not sure on Amazon. Also it depends on the release as often you see Trad. http://www.electricscotland.com/poetry/henderson/singalong/page121.htm for example names it as Kenny MacKenzie Also it depends on the song. This lyrics isnt readily available online If it was a popular chances are it may have the writers. Also some songs where the writers are know is used as a trad piece. Ie Ae Fond Kiss |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Loch Maree From: Joe Offer Date: 10 May 17 - 10:49 PM Yeah, I understand all that. But what you need to post is information that is very clear about where it comes from - where you found it, whether it was in print or a recording or whatever. It's important to know who did the transcription, if it was taken from a recording or live performance. If you don't know the songwriter name and you're pretty sure it's not a traditional song, put something like: (from the singing of Raffi, songwriter unknown). Also, note that there have been two previous threads on this song, and you started one of them. Be sure to use the Filter to look for previous threads you can post to. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Loch Maree From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 11 May 17 - 08:02 PM Thanks for the clarification Joe. It took me all of two minutes to find out that the song Loch Maree is a copyright work. It was put out in sheet music as well as recordings. Runrig fan, when you re-use the poetic words of a writer, if it is a modern work then the effort should be taken to credit that writer. It breaches copyright to use their words without license or at least giving them a name check, even if they are dead and can't do much about it! Also a lot of the ethos of a site like this is to get to the bottom of the origins of songs. Mudcat Cafe has always been a good source for that purpose. It would be sad if people just start to moronically post lyrics with no thought as to who wrote them, like a lot of the clickbait lyric sites In my opinion, if you don't know (unless you know it's a true trad. song or are trying to find out who wrote it), don't post! A little research usually turns up a reasonable answer. Just my opinion! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Loch Maree (Anne Lorne Gillies) From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 11 May 17 - 08:19 PM Runrig Fan etc, Loch Maree is a copyright work, written for a 1966 Scottish song contest which it won. Ann Lorne Gillies should not be credited as she only recorded it. I am disgusted that you are not giving due credit to the writer of the work You are breaching copyright in that work. The lyrics are not traditional. You are one of those people who fall into the trap of thinking if something is old style Scottish and has been around for a while it must be traditional. A song does not in UK/European terms become traditional until 70 years after the death of the author/composer. Sadly, you don't seem to care. Anyway, this song was written by Roy D. Ford and is published by Bosworth and Co. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Loch Maree From: RunrigFan Date: 11 May 17 - 09:52 PM Dont have a go at me; I haven't used this site in a while. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Loch Maree (Anne Lorne Gillies) From: RunrigFan Date: 11 May 17 - 09:56 PM I do care and if you notice I forgot to add the credit. OK if you must know many Robert Burns that's credited on releases etc etc is credited as trad. Don't have a go at me for that. Also if you find a traditional song; chances are we know who wrote said song. OK i know, but i'm not brush you can tar with. Gosh! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Loch Maree (Anne Lorne Gillies) From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 11 May 17 - 11:55 PM All I'm trying to get across is that this is a modern song. And it is often easy to find who wrote them in two minutes. There is a whole article about this song which you can find if you Google the title, that's the useful information to post, where a song comes from - how it was written, and who by (not always true though!). Occasionally you might well be asking about a traditional derivative, but not in this particular instance. Sadly, there are people who now credit the artist performing the song as is they wrote it when all they've done is recorded it, and had no part in its authorship or composition. If it's Trad. often you will see Trad. Arr. by. However, in this case it was obviously a modern work. When you do find a trad. work it is true that people on Mudcat like to collect lyric variations or parodies. Sometimes a singer will add bits or change the song. However, this does not give them any part of the copyright, unless its trad. Giving correct information is important as you can have people stealing songs due to the misinformation that you might put out, as this gets brought up by Google. This leads to loss of copyright, and hurts the writer or their family. For some of us sad individuals, posterity is important. Mudcat is often a good research resource, and a way of storing extra information on songs, along with copyright society databases. It would be sad if that gets lost in careless attribution of lyrics. Whoo.. hope that clarifies! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Loch Maree (Anne Lorne Gillies) From: RunrigFan Date: 12 May 17 - 12:28 AM I guess but if we look at Ae Fond Kiss for example. Many release state trad despite it being a Robert Burns song. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=6&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjLlsKUwOnTAhWJLcAKHarvBVsQFgg_MAU&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rampantscotland.com%2Fsongs%2Fblsongs_kiss.htm&usg=AFQjCNGijdlGD77Bw71wzaHdtwWM5AYDCA&sig2=b1qfTpyHdqOjGf6GxAk6uQ is one example. tunearch.org/wiki/Ae_Fond_Kiss One Discogs entry https://www.discogs.com/release/3678135-Ae-Fond-Kiss/images Another entry https://www.discogs.com/Anne-Lorne-Gillies-Milestone/release/6104094 What do we do if a release says trad, but we know it's written by Robert Burns. Many trad songs despite the writer being know is credited as trad. Massacre Of Glencoe being one such example is often credited as trad despite it being written by Jim McLean. I'm not saying you are wrong. But if the writer is known; but it states trad ie on a vinyl, then should the orginal credit be added. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Loch Maree From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 12 May 17 - 12:29 AM The problem was that you posted the lyrics to be permanently stored as a resource for singers to use. But you credited Anne Lorne Gillies, who was only the singer - not the author or composer. This then leads to misinformation which can snowball. The singer or band is not always the originator of the work. It's difficult to explain.. but there are copyright societies throughout the world who store song registrations used for the crediting and royalty collection when songs are licensed for broadcasting and recording. So you should credit the registered writer/s if it's a modern song, (unless there is some factual error), along with the lyric. Joe gave a good guide as to Mudcat's accepted requirement for lyric additions. You don't just blindly put the performer/recording artist down as the originator of the work. I Hope that is clear for the future! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Loch Maree (Anne Lorne Gillies) From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 12 May 17 - 12:58 AM The whole point about this site is that folk singers etc. try and get to the bottom of where a song comes from. It is your responsibility before you post to try and ascertain where a song comes from. Different if a song is trad. or you are just asking about the origins or a full set. Don't post lyrics at all to be permanently stored unless you are sure. You can sometimes help set the record straight... like as you say McLean's...Glencoe. It's the thing of common sense. Unfortunately many singers and recording artists or their record companies are totally ignorant, or chance their arm making false trad. claims. on modern works - or just make errors. Frequently there will be printing errors on old record covers. It's different for me as I can look up the MCPS/PRS copyright society database and do a check to see which is likely to be the most accurate registration. The collective mind of Mudcatters is also often a good research tool. If you are unsure, ask others before you wrongly attribute lyrics to be permanently stored. |

Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Loch Maree (Roy D. Ford) From: Joe Offer Date: 12 May 17 - 01:10 AM Hi, Rossey - I think it's OK to post lyrics that are incomplete or inaccurate. It does help if people specify what they know and what they don't know about the song they're posting. It's my job to clean things up before they're ready to be indexed, or to be included in the Digital Tradition. When I see a song that's ready for indexing, I standardize the format and check it through to make sure that it's as complete and correct and documented as we can get it. You'll see that the lyrics posted by Jim Dixon and verified by Jim McLean are highlighted. But it's a process and it takes time, and people do take a while to get used to it. Not to worry. -Joe Offer, Mudcat Music Editor- |
