No, no. When I wrote "To H*ll with all those banjos!" I meant something else entirely.

Hi Jane

Are you still looking for an open back 5 string? I saw the following on the UK Bluegrass forum and thought of this thread.

Deering openback

I think that sounds like a really good buy.

Maria

Also check if a previous owner has been biting the banjo. The police can trace a banjo through the teeth marks on it.

The important thing with a second hand banjo is to make sure that it has not been used in the commission of a murder, robbery or other violent crime. Run a check for hair and blood samplea and gunpowder traces. Have it checked for DNA.

It may be a banjo for which the police are searching, and have an APB out for. Many a banjo player, now behind bars, has regretted not taking these simple precautions.

It is, Jane. We have sessions in the park all day, some of them in the superb orangery, including a couple of Appalachian Dance teams. In the evening we get to a lovely pub, The Ship, just over the road and play till well after "closing" time. If it's a fine evening we finish with a session round a big campfire. They're all great people I've known for years who just love to play lots of tunes.
And it's all free to musicians (or anyone pretending to be one)! It attracts lots of paying visitors the Hall, and they love having us there. You'd be very welcome....

Ray

Jane - yes the event at Sewerby Hall is an Old Time picking weekend, run by the Friends Of American Old Time Music And Dance.

It's not on the Foaotmad website - needs updating.
This is from a Foaotmad mailout:

SEWERBY Get Together May Day 2011

There have been some minor changes this year, mainly which the entrance into the park has been changed and the entrance now is through the EXIT gate onto High Sewerby Road, and not along the cliff top.

May Day weekend -
From Friday 29th of April to and including Monday 2nd of May. However as in the past we can move on to the park from noon Thursday 28th and do not have to be away until noon Tuesday 3rd.

September Weekend - From Friday 2nd of September to and including Sunday 4th. Again we can get on the park from noon on the Thursday and leave noon on the Monday.

Jane, the session is at the Tiger, on Lairgate, every Friday. Officially it starts at around 9 but a few of us often get there a bit before. Watch out for a guy with brown hair, beard, glasses and a lived-in expression, toting a melodeon and concertina - it'll be me :-)

I can certainly second Ray's recommendation of Eagle. I'm a tenor player, but bought an Ozark "G" fot £190, including spare strings, a tuner, gig bag and p&p to N Ireland. Looks good, sounds good and seems well made. Just have to learn how to play it now.
Site's well worth a visit.
Davy.

BanjoRay - is this an old time music event going on at Sewerby Hall over May Day weekend? I couldn't find owt via Google about it

thanks
Jane

Just had an on-line look at the Music Room's selection of banjos. There are some expensive good ones, but I'm not keen on the under £200 ones.

If you contact Jonny Hulme at The Music Room he will talk you through what is available and I promise you he will not bamboozle you with technical speak. As possibly the best 5 string banjo player and teacher in the area Jonny has a keen eye on all that good about Banjos and will make sure you end up with what you need and not what someone else tells you you need.

I know The Music Room have a great selection of fantastic properly set up banjos both new and second hand for under £200

Jonny is at The Music Room teaching on Saturdays and one other day of the week. Wht not give him a call on 01274 879768 or email jonny@themusicroom-online.co.uk I know he will look after you really well.

Guy - unfortunately the main dealer in the UK for GoldTone banjos is down in Faversham, in Kent, maybe 200 miles from Hull. I think it's the only place Jane could get a look at the CC OT.
If Jane comes to Sewerby Hall, Bridlington (not too far from 'ull) over May day weekend she can get to see a good few open back banjos being played by good players - as well as guitars, fiddles etc. They're all friendly people and free with advice. If she brings a tent she can camp free all weekend, and join in the sessions.

This is not as crazy as it sounds! Try freecycle, it is amazing what people have in their attics that they are prepared to give away.

Eric Beharrell sounds like a good one, and Hornsea's only a bus ride away for me! How do I get in touch with him? Is he on mudcat?

Jane

I can second the recommendation for Eric Beharrell. He's just put a new neck on a tenor banjo for me; it's made a lovely instrument from an old pre-war thing I got from ebay.

Just been to Eagle Music and the Music Room today - not much in the latter but Eagle have a nice-to-play Dearing on offer @ £279 with tuner, gig bag, strap, picks and cd included. Only drawback is it's very blond! There's 27% discount on this from the original price.

Both the Music Room in Cleckheaton and Eagle Music just outside Huddersfield have a wide selection of good second hand instruments, not usually advertised on their websites.

Look up Eagle Music of Huddersfield. They sell an excellent banjo for under £200 called an Ozark Californian. It's a very well made (of maple) third world copy of a Deering Goodtime. I've played several, and they're excellent.

Hi Jane,
John, crew member on tug Wheldale at Goole Waterways Museum, has just bought a Windsor off Ebay and he has another. I'll ask him if he's got one for sale when I see him on Wednesday. I have a long neck D banjo for sale but it wouldn't do for what you want I shouldn't think.

Does anyone know any good places around Yorkshire where I can buy a second hand 5 string banjo? I'm looking for an open back old timey style preferably. Failing that I hear there is a shop in Huddersfield where I can get a reasonably priced new one? I'm looking to spend around £200.
