Spent a while looking for this in the Irish Traditional Music Archive today. Had almost given up when I decided to try rose in "Title" and Australia in "associated country" as search terms. Up popped a song called Sweet Rose of Clonmel (think about the erosion...). The archive has a photocopy of the sheet music. Unfortunately, the Australian connection seemed to be just that the publishers had an Australian branch! Basically a drawing room ballad with piano accompaniment, as far as I can see. Mind you - such songs have been known to go feral! I reckon it's a contender, anyway.

Judging by Roud's index, the Rose Connolly song was collected exclusively in the States. Seems an unlikely candidate at the moment.

I have just finished reading "The True History of the Kelly Gang", an intriguing take on the life of Ned Kelly. There are several references to songs sung in the Irish community, most of them fairly well known, but this one I haven't come across before. Any info?
