Subject: Lyr Add: IN THE WOODSHED SHE SAID SHE WOULD From: Jim Dixon Date: 20 Mar 11 - 02:11 PM You can hear or download this song at The Internet Archive. It's song #7 on that page. Here's my transcription. (The recording includes lots of patter that I have omitted.) IN THE WOODSHED SHE SAID SHE WOULD Howard Johnson, Johnny Tucker and Monty Siegel, 1928 As sung by Gracie Fields VERSE 1: Johnny had a girl named Mary. She was chilly, very, very. When he would try to kiss her, she'd balk. She would slap his face, Make him keep his place, Till one night he took her for a walk. CHORUS 1: He asked her if she'd kiss him in the garden, And in the garden, she said, "No!" He even tried to kiss her on the old back porch, But on the old back porch she wouldn't go. He wondered if she was human, or if she was made of wood, So at last he said, "Oh, kiss me in the woodshed!" And in the woodshed, she said she would. CHORUS 2: He asked her if she'd kiss him in the gloaming, And she answered, "Why, where is that?" He tried to kiss her in her own apartment, too, But she said, "No, sir!" and knocked him flat. He tried ev'ry place he knew of, all over the neighbourhood, So at last he said, "Oh, kiss me in the woodshed!" And in the woodshed, she said she would. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: In the Woodshed She Said She Would From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 20 Mar 11 - 11:34 PM Often is it the patter that makes an otherwise almost forgettable song a real 'entertainment item', when performed by a Master Artist. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: In the Woodshed She Said She Would From: Jim Dixon Date: 10 May 11 - 05:30 PM Leslie Sarony also sings this song, with this additional verse between Chorus 1 and Chorus 2: VERSE 2: Johnny tried each place he knew of Just to kiss his only true-love. But she would always give him the air. She was cold as ice; Wouldn't treat him nice. She had Johnny tearing out his hair. [And he tacks on his half-chorus at the end:] He wondered if she was human, or if she misunderstood, So at last they went right back into the woodshed, And in the woodshed, she said she would. |
