ps - Woody Mann lives in New York City, and Duck lives in Reading, UK. For those of you within distance of Reading, Oxford or London, Duck teaches individually as well - his prices are reasonable and negotiable. :)

Hi all - I passed on your comments to Duck (he's my husband - I should declare my interest here!), and he responded with the following:

Prices for similar guitar events by comparable teachers overseas are likewise comparably priced.

Accommodation is usually only included when a larger event can offer dormitory rooms, often shared. It's obviously quite a different thing to organize a very large event like Sore Fingers or European Blues Association's Blues Guitar Week, where dozens of students are involved and individual classes can be 20 students, than it is for one or two players to host a workshop where the maximum attendance will not exceed two dozen all told. For a small scale event like this, the overheads are much more of a factor.

The teaching time on last year's weekend was about 7 hours a day. And the group convened the evening before to plan things out. There was time for a bit of individual instruction as well, for those who had trouble keeping up with the group.

It might be considered expensive - but not a rip-off, we don't think."

Thanks for posting this. I was not familiar with these folk's work and had not heard their names. Looking him up, Woody Mann has some interesting gigs and unfamiliar gigs, and Duck Baker has some good finger style work on his website.

It would be interesting to know how many folks they draw, and if they're covering their expenses for the trip to the UK with one workshop.

It's tough times and everyone's trying to make a living.

That does seem extremely expensive compared to similar group tuition events. £250 for two days of tuition (Sat 10am-6pm and Sun 10am-5pm according to the site). It's also not clear exactly how much time within that is allocated to classes - I can't imagine it's going to be 7 or 8 hours solid teaching time.

By comparison the tuition element of the Sore Fingers Bluegrass Week is £240 - for FIVE days of group classes, around 4.5 hours per day. Top bluegrass and old time musicians come over from the US to teach each year. This year's tutors include Jim Hurst teaching guitar, Tony Trischka teaching bluegrass banjo, Matt Flinner teaching mandolin, Bob Carlin teaching old time banjo just to mention a few. That sort of level of cost seems reasonable to me for what you are getting - just under £50 a day for group tuition.

HALF THAT! That's a total rip off!

I'll teach ya how to (A) make a million dollars a year, by flexing and bowing a piece of razor sharp spring steel betwixt yer knees, with the pointy parts mere millimeters away from (B) body parts both near and dear and I can do so in (C) five minutes or less, for F-R-E-E! You won't even need accommodations or food!

(Disclaimer: (A) Start out with two million dollars. (B) Many body parts don't grow back. (C) Actual time may vary.)

That's a total rip off. Our Gainsborough fiddle and banjo workshops in November with Dave Bing and Gerry Milnes from West Virginia cost half that, INCLUDING accommodation and food.
