Does anyone know of a ballad written about Michael Lowry. I would love to find the words. I heard it sung once, in Tipperary, I think?

I have heard at least one song about the gentleman concerned - but can't, for the life of me, remember who wrote/sung it. I suspect there are more being penned as we speak! Liberty Boy may well be able to put a finger on it...

Regards

This satirical song was written by Mick Scanlan, a Clare man living near Nenagh in Co. Tipperary. He was a founder member of the Nenagh Singers Circle, now defunct. The last line of his song is " I wonder if I'll ever be able to finish this song"

Still a work in progress I suppose.

I will ask him if he is happy to have the words posted here. He does not do "computers" himself.

Subject: Lyr Add: LOWRY (Michael Scanlan)
From: GUEST,George Henderson

As promised yesterday:

Written by Michael Scanlan and posted here with his permission:

Lowry.

LOWRY
(Michael Scanlan)

From near to Holycross he came, a man of great renown and fame,
With Feile he put Thurles on the map.
He got elected to the Dail, although he wasn't from Fianna Fail,
Which shows he's just an ordinary chap.

Michael loved the CIE, he went by train down to the Lee,
Down to Horgan's Quay where you all know
He drank Barry's tea with O'Callaghan, who was Fianna Fail's only man,
Kelly and O'Leary didn't show.

CIE were footing the bill, both the boys they had their fill,
Lowry didn't care much anyhow,
For a Garda driver is his perk, sitting at the wheel of a dark blue merc,
No confidence vote will take it from him now.

CIE had a motor car and a driver who never took it very far
So the mileage on the clock was low
The bosses and the minister were keen to sell the car while it was clean
And try to cover up the waste of all that dough.

Now Lowry's back's against the wall, he was put there by Fianna Fail
Even Mary Harney made him frown,
But the Premier man will rise once more, he'll bring Feile down to Templemore,
Because there is a station in the town.

Chorus :
And he follows John and Dick and P. de Rossa too,
He is a minister and a staunch and loyal blue
Now he takes his brief and waits outside his farmyard gates
To catch those watching men in cartels that he knew.

Michael bought a rectory, we all thought he'd change it to a factory,
But Lowry, now he had a different plan.
He built a big extension on, the cost was paid for by Ben Dunne,
No longer is he Bruton's right hand man.

He once was pardoned by the State, 'twas Bertie himself who wiped the slate,
But things appeared which he couldn't quite explain
Like the Isles of Cayman and of Man, accounts streamlined by Mr. Dunne
Or a lady that he had in bed in Spain.

But Mick's an independent man, he made his speak and so did stand
In the Tipperary North constituency.
He promised his friend his number one, but no longer is he Bruton's favourite son
Still he got elected with Smith and O'Kennedy.

Mick went on to top the poll, Bruton's bunch were fit to foal
Because they got all their calculations wrong.
Now he's up there on his own, he can be contacted on an ESAT PHONE
I wonder will I ever get to finish this bloody song.

The tribunal report is here at last
Moriarty found things in the past
Were not above board as they should have been
Indirect payments from Denis O'Brien
Meant to the cabinet Lowry was lying
Now the D.P.P. WILL HAVE TO DO SOME FURTHER PRYING

Chorus :
He used to follow John and Dick and P. de Rossa too,
He was a minister and a staunch and loyal blue
But now he sits and waits inside his mansions gates
In case those watching men come from the revenue.

Silent stay, hope and pray,
Tribunals and tax collectors go away,
Leaving us all to get on with our lives,
Spending more time with devoted wives.
Getting found out I'm afraid,
Was the only mistake that was made.
(Sleep now in financial bliss).

ADDITIONS IN MARCH 2011 --------to be continued some time in the future.
