Subject: Old Dutch dance tunes and songs
From: Jack Campin

I've started transcribing bits of this book over the years (since I've got a copy, and not many other people have). But never got very far because of its sheer intimidating hugeness. Now I find someone's made the whole thing available, in scanned and ABC formats:

Oude en Nieuwe Hollantse Boerenlieties en Contredansen

There are some fantastic tunes in there, from all over north-west Europe around 1700.

For songs:

Somebody has put an unbelievable amount of work into that.

Very, very cool (says this second-generation Dutch girl). Thanks, Jack, for sharing the links! Kathy

There was a huge amount of cultural/commercial traffic between the East of England from the Middle Ages right through to the modern era. I have a feeling that if we bypass the language barrier the English and Flemish musical traditions are more similar than different.

There was a thread about a website of Dutch tunes on concertina.net : here

you'll find some more in that discussion.

Wow.
Are there any significant concordances with early MSS / publishings over here?

The 'Oude and Nieuwe Hollantse Boeren lieties en Contredansen' were originally published during the first two decades of the 18th century (1700-1716).

They are not the only or earleist collection of similar material: in 1644 Jacob van Eyck published the 'Speel-goddinne', 'De Fluyten Lusthof' was published in 146 and a second aprt in 1649. 'De Hollantse Schouburgh' appeared from 1697-1716.

the 'Boerenlieties' collection was re- published in fascimile in 1972, editor Marie Veldhuyzen.

Thanks, Jack, for mentioning this site. I found it once, then I lost it.

You are right that it offers many good tunes. I have a tune from there called 'Cecelia' that I keep on my piano. It is a sexy little number, hardly sounds like a cecelia to me, but that's part of the charm.

I've added the site to my Favorites so it won't get lost again.
