No - as expected they were all Highland Pipe bits. I did know the last members of the Borough Pipe Band, which ALMOST made it to 100yrs before folding. The seller thought they might be 'irish pipes' because the drums etc had shamrocks and harps on them. That's not to say that they're not Irish Pipes - but Irish War Pipes, not Union/Uillean Pipes. As an All-Ireland Fleadh winner in the past (not many competitors...) I can call them either, but the gaelic name is piob mhor, which translates to 'big pipes' (or Great Pipes). Having two drones was a way to try and make Irish pipes different, but everyone plays three drone sets. There were sometimes two drone pipes in Scotland, but that was before competitions and the army standardised everything.

I put one complete set of pipes together from the bits today, but had to go out before I could finish reeding them. Hopefully tomorrow...

I'll have to find a suitable chanter for the smaller set, but with what look like ivory mounts I've struck lucky, so Pavane, VERY grateful - how do I express that online ? If you make it to our Tuesday session in Greenwich it's certainly worth a couple of drinks..

I still have it in the car and need to go through it all, but there seem to be a fair few spares and useful bits, if not complete sets of highland pipes - although that's not impossible when I match everything up. Most interesting are some child-size pipes which could be interesting for indoor-session playing, if they are mostly complete.

Its possible they're Brian Boru pipes.

They have a different drone arrangement and the chanter has keys on, IIRC.

Didnt the Irish MARCHING Pipes have only two drones ? And the Irish added the third drone as a joke for the Scots , which the Scots still havent got .

I believe Irish pipe bands sometimes have a different arrangement of drones but they essentially use the same instrument as Scottish pipe bands. The bag would not usually be tartan so green or saffron would be used. Of course there's no reason why the parts would not be from uillean pipes, the band may have had a ceili band attached. The only way to find out is to see them.

I found a collection of parts for a set of uillean pipes on sale in a second-hand shop yesterday. I couldn't check the whole lot, which was in several boxes, but it may be a full set (bag is there) and perhaps spare drones etc. The seller says they came from the defunct Borough pipe band, obtained when he cleared items from a church. If anyone is interested, he is asking £60 for the lot. Let me know and I will put you in touch.
