Saw it at Sidmouth. It is brilliant - absolutely a must see if you are into morris dancing but a must must see if you are not. it's onl;y an hour of your time and you ght learn something...

WAY OF THE MORRIS will be screening at the forthcoming
london open city documentary festival on Saturday 18th June at 3:00.

the screening will be taking place at the
A.V. Hill Lecture Theatre, Malet Place, off Torrington Place, University College London (UCL) campus, WC1E 6BT

co-presented by magpie's nest (BBC's best folk club 2010),
the screening will be followed by a q&a with the filmmakers
and then some live open-air music.

I highly recommend it. The opening (animated) sequence is well worth seeing in and of itself; gorgeous animation -- clever, moving, playful and thought-provoking -- a real gem! And the landscape photography is truly stunning, as well.

As for the story, I particularly like the way it acknowledges that Morris is considered very UNcool and then proceeds on its way without worrying about it.
It would have been rather embarrassing if it looked like it was trying to make Morris seem cool (especially if it did not succeed), but by presenting Morris as something almost outside of time and happy to simply be what it is, regardless of its public image, I think Morris dancing ends up looking not so naff after all.

Already shown in Sheffield. Great film and RTim gets a written mention and I do believe he is in one or two of the archive shots.

And, according to today's Sidmouth newsletter, Way of the Morris is being screened during this year's festival:

"You may have heard about the new film by actor and filmmaker Tim Plester called Way of the Morris. It's a beautiful film about Tim learning to embrace his heritage as the son of a morris dancing family. Along the way it uncovers the impact of the First World War on rural communities and their traditions, as the Adderbury Village Morris Men go to the Somme to dance for all the boys of the village side who never came home.

Way of the Morris is not yet on release in Britain, but we're delighted to announce that we will be screening the film and conducting a Q&A with the filmmakers at Sidmouth FolkWeek."

I am looking forward to seeing film this some day?
Tim, his father Bill (who used to be my hair dresser!) and his uncle Jim are old friends from back home, even though we danced on the "other" team in the village for the last 30 plus years...
We were once all one team!
I think I gave Tim his first acting job when he was around 12 years old, in a play I wrote about Banbury. He was one of the lead characters!

I'll be back in the village in a couple of weeks.

Way of the Morris: morris on, big time

The bells, the bells... I was lucky enough to get my hands on a review copy of Way of the Morris, a documentary by actor and film-maker Tim Plester, which has just started doing the rounds at film festivals, and was recently at SXSW in Texas.

And what a treat it is. Unlike the recent Morris: a Life with Bells On, which never felt at ease with its subject (morris off), this is a beautifully crafted story by someone with a link to the morris tradition who doesn't allow it to stand in the way of good film-making.

Strong sense of place: tick. Photography to die for: tick. Good storyline: tick. In fact, it looks as if he may have done something very clever and made a film that will make morris dancing more mainstream just by showing it as it is. He's looking for distribution at the moment.
